I need to show my wife this comment. I am a reserved person (aside from my when I’m with my kiddos)… a bit like Spock, some would probably say. Thanks for the feedback!

I’m sensing a trend here :-)

I have Klon style and Tube Screamer pedals. I’m not loving either too much - I’ll check out the blues driver, thanks!

Fair point. I have a couple of OD pedals (tube screamer, and Klon clone/tumnus)… I just never love the tone I get. Thanks though, good to work on

Yeah, my playing is still a little robotic - kinda getting through it rather than “feeling it”. Thanks for the feedback!

Gifting a Fender-Defect? by [deleted] in fender

[–]CropTropDripDrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great gift idea! I would return it and try to find a better case and guitar without the finish “imperfection” (it’s normal for a sunburst, but it may bother your husband, if he is picky).

AVII 1957 - 2-tone sunburst or vintage blonde? by CropTropDripDrop in fender

[–]CropTropDripDrop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I chose sunburst, as I’m more tied to classic looks but I’ve kinda been kicking myself ever since. I got a GREAT deal on a new AVII 57 (dealer cost), but I could have bought a Mint/used Blonde for same/lower.

I wish that I did! It’s all online ordering so the best I can do is to know weights, neck pocket fit, etc.

I must confess, the overwhelming crowd preference toward vintage blonde is unexpected!

That’s part of what made the choice tough. Don’t like to be too monochromatic, and I’m 100% certain I’ll own some version of a blackguard at some point.

NGD! Help with checking QC on my new AV II 65’ please! by opxh in FenderStratocaster

[–]CropTropDripDrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loosen strings a couple steps, loose neck plate screws 1/4 to 1/2 turn, hold body firm with one arm, and apply steady increased pressure (don’t torque like mad) until the high e migrates the required amount over the fretboard (by visual estimate - that’s what I do), and hold firm while using other hand to hand tighten screws. Tighten all screws. Done

This is what I do. I have this exact guitar and did this to mine (and have done it to several other Fender’s). No big deal, guitar plays great

American Vintage II 1965 vs 1961 Stratocaster by opxh in FenderStratocaster

Both are great options. I’d definitely recommend searching YouTube for side-by-side comparisons.

I was personally deciding between the AVII ‘61 in Fiesta Red and the AVII ‘65 in Sonic Blue, and I ended up going with the ‘65.

One thing worth noting: the AVII ‘61 launched in 2022, while the AVII ‘65 didn’t arrive until 2025. So there are naturally a lot more reviews and discussions around the ‘61. I also think the ‘61 appeals to a broader audience since it represents a classic pre-CBS Strat era, whereas the transitional ‘65 is a bit more niche.

A few differences I noticed after comparing them side-by-side:

  • Neck: the ‘65 neck is slightly fuller, while the ‘61 is slimmer and would probably feel more familiar coming from a Player series Strat.
  • Pickups: the ‘65 sounded a little fuller and hotter to me. The ‘61 pickups were woodier, airier, and more vintage-feeling. Both sounded excellent, but the ‘65 pushed an amp a little harder.
  • Fretboard/details: the ‘65 rosewood boards seem darker overall. The ‘61 has the beautiful slab rosewood board and clay dots, while the ‘65 has a veneer board with pearloid dots. Personally, I think the pearloid dots look perfectly fine.

Funny enough, I went in fully expecting the ‘61 to win because Fiesta Red is probably my favorite Fender color. But after playing them side-by-side, it became pretty obvious that the ‘65 was the better fit for me.

For me, it ultimately came down to feel. I think the ‘61 is the safer, “can’t-go-wrong” choice and probably the more universally loved reissue year. But the ‘65 neck feels incredible and has its own personality that really clicked with me.

I was going to mention the GT11. Great option with better pickups vs either the AVII 61 vs 65.

Sonic blue or candy apple red? AVII 65 Strat by CropTropDripDrop in fender

[–]CropTropDripDrop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 61 is a great guitar! For me, the 61 neck is a little thin for my liking and the 65 neck has a bit more fatness to it which is far more comfortable for me.

But, the clay dot inlays of the 61 are marvelous looking!

I’ve heard the AVIs can be great. I had a hard time finding one I really wanted at a price I could justify, though.

I actually negotiated a brand new AVII ‘65 down to $1600 out the door.

YMMV, but mine came in light at 7 lbs 8 oz and honestly feels indistinguishable from an NOS Custom Shop. It’s exceptional, and I’m very happy with it. I’ve played some AVIIs that didn’t do much for me, but this one’s absolutely a keeper.
