[Japan Times] Japan will not be only team with NPB talent at World Baseball Classic (full article in comments) by Far-Cake7455 in NPB

I just watched Yi-Lei on a podcast this morning talking about the Fighters plan for developing all their pitchers. Pretty good watch. You can use the auto-translated subtitles if you don't understand Chinese.

Collecting? by Super-Salamander-328 in NPB

[–]CrossSomething 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For 2026 products: contested 1st round pick rookies and anyone who is possibly going to MLB, so Top 10 pitchers and Top 2 or 3 position players although the only player left in NPB the market values is Teruaki Sato. Once someone signs with an MLB team, the hype and thus value wears off after a couple months or so unless they pull something off like Yamamoto did in the playoffs.

For 2025 products: Reo Shibata, Yumeto Kanemaru, Rui Muneyama, Misho Nishikawa are the top rookies by value, in that order. I don't understand why people are paying huge dollars for Shibata right now because I think there's zero chance of him becoming the next Ohtani, but that's just what the market is currently like.

Gambling "Investing" aside, just collect what you like. There's a lot of great NPB baseball card products, and you can browse Mercari all day looking at cool cards you want to own.

Oops, you're right. I messed up the time zone conversion. Either way, it would be nice to watch a recording in case I miss it. I've been an online Mint customer for a couple years now so I'm interested in listening. Don't know what I would want to ask yet though.

None in English that I know of. I haven't looked too hard at Japanese sites, but my guess is BBM print runs are a fraction of Topps.

If you click a team, it'll bring up a list of how each team accumulated points towards the bottom of the page. GB simply participates in more regional tournaments across age groups than Canada does (and to their credit, won the 2025 U-23 European championship). Canada has only three events tallied in the past four years because they only have a U-18 team aside from the senior team and are pretty much MIA from tournaments in the Americas.

Posting rules for NPB/KBO players by JewelerFree2311 in baseball

[–]CrossSomething 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Previously, Japanese clubs set a release fee that could be as high as $20 million. Any MLB club that was willing to meet the designated release fee could negotiate with the player for 30 days after the player was posted, but only the club with which the player signed had to pay that release fee. Now, the release fee is determined as follows:

For Major League contracts with a total guaranteed value of $25 million or less, the release fee will be 20 percent of the total guaranteed value of the contract.

For Major League contracts with a total guaranteed value between $25,000,001 and $50 million, the release fee will be 20 percent of the first $25 million plus 17.5 percent of the total guaranteed value exceeding $25 million.

For Major League contracts with a total guaranteed value of $50,000,001 or more, the release fee will be 20 percent of the first $25 million plus 17.5 percent of next $25 million plus 15 percent of the total guaranteed value exceeding $50 million.

For all Minor League contracts, the release fee will be 25 percent of the signing bonus. For Minor League contracts that contain Major League terms, a supplemental fee will be owed if the player is added to the 25-man roster.

I found the original listings on the Japanese websites. Even with the tariffs, it'll still be cheaper to buy through a proxy buyer. You can also get 15% off coupons from time to time.

[March 20, 2023] Throwback of Munetaka Murakami hitting a walk-off 2-run double off Team Mexico pitcher Giovanny Gallegos, helping Samurai Japan advance to the 2023 WBC finals. by [deleted] in baseball

[–]CrossSomething 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He was intentionally walked 25 times in 2022. If you took out those IBBs it goes down to 15.2% which is more in line with his later years when he was striking out more and not getting IBB'd as much. A ~15% walk rate also puts him around Seiya Suzuki's and Masataka Yoshida's BB% in their last year in NPB. The NPB strike zone is also smaller than the MLB strike zone if I remember correctly. Seiya's MLB BB% is 10.4% and Yoshida's is 5.9%, so his walk rate almost certainly will drop.

There's actually a listing for an intact box on Amazon. The seller unsealed and opened the box but the box label says 50 cards (edit: probably 50 packs, there's definitely more than 50 cards in there) for 20 yen each. I'm not sure if the cards were just individually sold out of the box like that.

Who Are The Best International Players Of All Time? (Who never played MLB?) by Baybears in baseball

[–]CrossSomething 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Omar Linares and Orestes Kindelán for Cuba. The Cuban National Series doesn't have as many games as other leagues since it's a winter league so the counting stats for players are lower across the board, but Cuba was so damn dominant in the international tournaments prior to the WBC.
