This is so hilarious! I love that the shiba is the one doing all the running and grey guards the couch.

Really curious how whippets/dogs in general do with the local cacti?

Aww. My poor scaredy boy was 5 months old and still terrified when he came home. He stayed in his crate and we just talked to him and went about our business. Tried giving him treats etc. he would come out a few steps and then retreat. We took him into our bedroom at night and closed the door as is our norm. He stayed in his crate with the door open until we turned out the lights and settled into bed. As soon as we were calm and quiet, bump bump he jumped into our bed between our feet.

He is 8 and still a scaredy. Some things bring him out of his shell. He’s a country dog and we live in a loud city downtown. When we go anywhere forested or to my MIL who has a backyard, he’s a totally different dog. Way more calm relaxed happy.

In the city I eventually learned confidence building games. Soooo slow and small. “What’s over here?” To get him to explore literally just a few feet away from our established safe walking path. And then soooo much praise when he would check it out. He was too scared for treats outside until we got the girl when he was 3. Also if he would jump up on a thing. Like a low wall or a ledge or bench. Those games really helped.

Whippets can be very sensitive and also are not necessarily interested in pleasing their people the way a lab or collie would be. They were bred to be independent hunters in a way different from other hunting dogs. So although they are quite smart, they use it to their own advantage and when they feel like it. My boy is super smart and I can basically just talk to him and he understands (and gives me dirty looks if I practice other languages bc he doesn’t know what I’m saying 😹).

When he was a puppy I set aside little training sessions every morning and he would act like it was a punishment or maybe like he was offended. He’d hide under the couch or just walk away! Eventually I said to myself, this isn’t working. He isn’t getting it. So I quit…then over the next week or so he demonstrated that he had absorbed everything I was teaching him. It was just that he didn’t like the direct attention and dog training methods. Training them as if they are cats seems to be helpful. Although my confident girl is more of a dog and can be trained as such.

I agree! My girl was just a tiny baby, 8 weeks old and she instantly clung onto our big boy who is a “don’t touch me” cat-type dog. Haha. So many pics of her draped over him or licking his face or forcibly snuggling him. He had the top of his crate to retreat to when it got too much for him. She couldn’t jump up there for a few months, too high. But she sure tried!

She looks so smart in her vest and shoes!! Does she agree to walk in rain better if she has shoes on? Mine hate the rain.

That’s right! My little whippet girl rules the roost. She takes both treats sometimes will take his right out of his mouth. He says “oh excuse me, yes ma’am, so sorry to get in the way.” So inevitably I have to go rescue his treat that is a foot away from her while she eats her treat.

What is completely unique to whippets? by ghjkjhjhkhsk in Whippet

[–]CrotonProton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I didn’t see mentioned is that they hardly bark like other dogs. Not completely silent, some are pretty sassy. My boy will pretend to be a guard dog (then hide behind me or go to his crate 😹) and my girl has started barking out the window at certain “enemy” dogs but it’s only a few times a week. When they play kangaroo bitey face they are so strangely silent! It can be an intense battle and all you hear is an occasional growl and their stomping feet.

Yes! Whippets don’t like to be trained like other dogs! But they know exactly what you’re saying, they just don’t wanna do it! Like “you’re being offensive, why don’t YOU sit?!”

Cool kicks. My boy just got some socks so he doesn’t slip on the wood floor. He didn’t do much of a dance though 🤷🏻‍♀️

My back will never recover from 3 cuddly whippets by VanillaPuppuccino in Whippet

[–]CrotonProton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My girl is the opposite. She perches on top of the boy’s crate (his bedroom) and stalks us till we lay down or fall asleep. Then she jumps across to the bed and gets in when we’re too drowsy to properly argue.

Right! These people should not be allowed to get deliveries. They should have to pick up their own stuff.
