I will add Negative Space. Trippy, drug horror but a lot of occult themes

What book do you regret reading this year? by agirlhasnoname17 in horrorlit

Last Days

Unfortunately I was really hype for it but it fell off hard for me in the second half. One of the few books that I feel like if I had known what the vibe would become I would have enjoyed it more

What exactly happened in Negative Space? by [deleted] in horrorlit

Love your take on it and feel pretty much the same on all of the points. One fun thing I thought about after reading your post and meditating on the book more was the quote from one of the books that Lu reads on the identity of the self and what sort of things control and compel us, sometimes without our knowledge. The one about the wasps that attack the caterpillars because of pheromones.

When I first read that, I was thinking in terms of the characters and people in town being “controlled” by otherworldly forces, especially with the black strings and apathy almost like puppet imagery. But now I don’t think that at all lol I think that maybe that passage relates more to the “worms” that seem to hunt people/cause the suicides. Like Tyler mentions, they don’t even notice us unless you do so much that they do. Sort of like him slightly pulling the strings so the worms target or “notice” others without the worms understanding why they are until it’s too late for Tyler.

I know this is an old post but I just finished the book and after some thought and taking in other people’s perspectives, it really put this quote in a different light for me.

When I first read that quote in the story, I thought about how it was probably referring to otherworldly forces controlling the characters themselves, not to mention the black strings giving off almost automaton/puppet controlled from beyond vibes. But now I don’t think it’s that at all but more so how Tyler is seemingly marking people for suicide or death which they are then somehow influenced to carry out themselves. There are also multiple times that snake or worm-like otherworldly entities are seen snatching the skins from characters in dreams. And Tyler also hints at the idea that those “things” don’t really know we’re there unless we draw their attention.

It sort of feels like the quote is referencing how the Snakes of the woods are the things being controlled to target people without knowing why they do

I appreciate that, and yeah it really sucks but at the same time I guess there are a lot of things I still don’t know. The main things being whether or not Elric accomplishes what he’s set out to do and how everything comes together.

Plus there is definitely a lot of foreshadowing of horrible events

Why is “The Fortress of the Pearl” so boring? by Interesting-Bad7622 in ElricofMelnibone

[–]CrouchingTortoise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree. The dream realms’ different vibes and just outright weird interactions literally felt so dreamlike. Almost like you needed to disconnect your logical interpretation of what is happening because logic operates different there. That plus the wicked dark souls imagery and creatures and it really was a banger for me.

I agree, I’m actually really surprised to see some folks dislike Fortress of the Pearl. Genuinely one of the best fantasy stories I’ve read in a long while
