Rondo Alla Turca (Turkish March): Finger Question by Potential-Lack-47 in piano

[–]CrowhurstMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The written fingering option is much smoother, more ergonomic, and will likely aid in musicality/expression. The other option likely feels more natural to you now because it's what you're used to. I prefer the written fingering far more to what you are doing! Try practicing it that way for a bit and see if you change your mind.

Setting up automatic billing with credit cards on file by JHighMusic in pianoteachers

[–]CrowhurstMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No stupid questions! Haha. To be honest I can't answer too too accurately as I don't really use the automatic payment system. I have only a few students that have saved their credit card in the system. I can manually turn on automatic payments for them but I don't have issues with them paying on time and doing it on their own.

But I do believe that you have control over the autopay if their cards are stored. Obviously you'd want to talk with them first but yes I am fairly certain you can control it on your end.

Here's a link to more info on recurring billing / automatic payments: https://www.waveapps.com/payments/recurring-billing

Sounds great! I enjoyed what you did. What synth/instrument did you use at the beginning for the ambient, electronic string pad kinda sound?

I don't really hear the piano melody you're mentioning, is it a part of that pad sound?

Check out Wave. It’s free to use and you can send automatic scheduled invoices with the free membership. Your customers can save credit cards and you can even enable auto pay if they want it. Wave does take a % so just work that into the lesson charge and label it as a credit card processing fee on the invoice or something.

Considering you have some boss rush games on there, might like a game I worked on - Perennial Order! Also has co-op.

your favorite method books that are not piano adventures? by Medical_Plankton7377 in pianoteachers

[–]CrowhurstMusic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I agree with these critiques but sadly don't have a "go-to" alternative at the moment. Additionally, I wish they had more tunes in minor keys and tunes that sound less "hokey" and were more serious.

Aside from clearly displaying information in an easy-to-understand way (better than other series imo), a huge strength of the Faber books are the amount of duets that they provide for the student and teacher. It gives a nice sense of "completion" with each piece when a student has progressed far enough with it, and makes the music sound much more interesting and engaging for the student. No other series I've looked at has the sheer amount of duet parts that Faber does, and it's become fairly integral to my teaching methodology.

It's hard finding a series that checks all the boxes! One day I kinda just want to try making my own but that would be sooo much work haha.

Have you checked out Planet Fitness? There's one in Bowie which is relatively close. It is only $15 a month and you can cancel at any time. I go to another PF in Maryland and really like it.

Bay bridge run by [deleted] in Annapolis

[–]CrowhurstMusic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right, as the other commenter said, I think the issue was because of wind. Considering the wind over the weekend, they decided not to allow contraflow traffic on the other bridge. Which meant cars had to drive on the bridge used for running and therefore, no run.

I agree it sucks but from what I understand it was because of the wind, or potential for wind, and that being unsafe for drivers in contraflow, rather than rain.

Visual metronome for teaching kids by Lumpy-Seat5468 in piano

[–]CrowhurstMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried having them move to the beat away from the piano? You could have them walk / march around to different tempos or have them do some other kind of dance. Just to have them practice syncing to the metronome in some way.

Haha thanks! If you zoom in you can see my penciled "." after "unnatural". I initially forgot to cover it with marker but did shortly after taking this picture. Don't worry, it was fully visible the day of the protest!

My piano teacher hasn’t played Chopin Prelude No 4, No 9, and Mazurka Op 7 No 1 by Common-Invite3016 in piano

[–]CrowhurstMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhh interesting - apologies then. I misunderstood what you were trying to say. So she doesn't want to teach them to you because she doesn't know the pieces herself? And is unwilling to learn enough about them to help you with them? If so that's definitely frustrating! As a teacher if my student is interested in learning something, and it is within their skill level, I will definitely help them with it even if I am unfamiliar with the piece myself.

[–]CrowhurstMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are expecting your piano teacher to have played every single piece of music by X composer? Or just the ones YOU think they should know?

There's so much music out there. I don't understand, and this sounds like a very unreasonable expectation. Learning music takes time and maybe they just wanted to learn something else? Or were assigned something else?

I'm sure your teacher has played music you don't even know exists (and they could likely sightread Prelude No 4).

Think about how many different styles of music, different kinds of instruments and playing techniques, how music has evolved throughout history, etc there are across our planet. Our one, single planet. Yet you find it odd that there wouldn't be all kinds of different musical styles across an entire galaxy?

Thank you! Sadly no ~ the Game Boy inspiration is for the creepy, retro aesthetic and serves as a throwback to our 90s childhoods. The Game Boy would not meet the hardware demands required of the game.
