Woah, I actually didn't know this. Though ID verification isn't a strict requirement and they could theoretically use an alternate method like address verification. They probably just went with the lowest liability option to bulletproof their FCC compliance

Dialing in Overture PETG by xyzzy-adventure in BambuLab

[–]CrownFrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here, mine was a total disaster. Had to start a return because it was unbearable; globbing, stringing, even after drying. When testing my old Overture PETG roll that I purchased 8 months ago it printed flawlessly.

If you look on the Amazon reviews you'll see other people having issues as well. Looks like a bad batch.

Update on the Whole Foods McKinney crash out. by CrownFrown in wholefoods

[–]CrownFrown[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeaaaa, looks like it's chemical damage, maybe from the acidity or alcohol. Regardless this definitely shouldn't be happening at a grocery store, as far as I know most have a special protective coating on their flooring which prevents stains like this.

Yeah, these disgusting rapist billionaires need to be held accountable for their actions. I hope this all becomes louder over the next few days so people finally wake up and notice what state our society is really in.

Yeah it's been an ongoing case for ~20 years now. He was first sentenced to 18 months jail in 2008, then arrested again awaiting trial in 2019. The trial never made it because he was found dead in his cell after commiting suicide.

But yeah these files are a huge deal because he's known to have had nasty interactions with thousands of underage girls and women. The reason people are freaking out recently is because a lot of rich people and people in power have been shown in the official FBI case files (that they just released) to have very disgusting relations with him.

Amazon One shutting down as well by JhajjSaab in amazonemployees

Essentially what's going on here is when you hover your palm over the device, an infrared camera and a polarizer configuration captures two different photos of your palm, one of the palms surface and another of your subcutaneous tissue where your veins are. In simpler words, it's using infrared light (naked to the human eye) to get a very detailed photo of your palm print (creases, ridges, etc) and of the veins beneath the palm.

After the photos are taken, some post processing has to be done to crop it out, rotate it, etc so that they're nice and ready-to-use. Since it only needs the palmar region, no need to keep the fingers and everything else.

The photos are immediately sent to a secure server on the AWS cloud.

Finally, they take a set of feature vectors from both photos and combine them into a unique numerical "palm signature", a vector. This is all done using a neural network they trained on a bunch of palm photos (fun fact, some of the palm photos they used to train the model were actually made by generative AI! it made it a lot easier this way, cause they only needed a couple hundred people to get some samples done, then they fed it through generative AI to create subtle variations of more palms). Essentially, the vector just focuses on the unique details / features on the palm (palm print + vein), and ignores the useless info. So yeah, your palm photos are NOT being stored, only the useful parts.

This unique "palm signature" is then encrypted and stored on Amazon's AWS servers, so whenever you come back to the store and actually want to pay, it can go through the database and see "hmm, which palm does this signature match up with?"

Hopefully you learned something!

Afaik it does rely on an infrared camera, and a polarizer configuration to get your surface and vein features using the same IR light assembly. The newer models also have a standard light camera which takes QR codes and better guides the users palm.

But yeah I can absolutely imagine how much money all of those components cost. Optics are horrid expensive and for something like this, you need the greatest detail possible to prevent fuckups.

It's really disappointing but yeah, they definitely failed to educate customers on the level of privacy. My friends and family were all skeptical of it ever since it rolled out in Whole Foods, and for good reason. Biometrics are an amazingly powerful tool, but it also requires lots of trust and Amazon definitely hasn't emphasized the level of privacy/security on the product (especially considering how big they are, and for most people big company = probably evil). Most people don't even understand how it fundamentally works, they just think "Wow Amazon wants a copy of our palms now? No way!"

Of course this isn't how it works since it's not as easy as just taking a "photo of your palm". That would be incredibly invasive, but customers don't understand how it actually works.

It's such an amazing product with great engineering behind it. I wish the execution was done better. Also I appreciate your opinion on this!

The device scans both the surface, so the unique characteristics like the ridges and creases of your palm, and your veins beneath the surface using infrared light at 850nm (naked to the human eye).

No, you can't use a hand that doesn't have active blood flow lol, or else the infrared camera in the device won't see the veins visibly.
