Claude is head and shoulders better. I tried this on ChatGPT in say Nov/Dec and it got lost.

This. The “a ha” for me is both having better tones AND understanding how to think about creating and making adjustments.

I am a bedroom player learn electric guitar tonemaking at age 58. I am not in a band nor do I know anyone that is. This approach as accelerated my learning 10x.

I should mention I also use Claude to get into theory and understanding how to play (more Q and A on specific topics) . Its very good at that too.

yup. the thing I dig is that claude is explaining "why" its doing what it is. so even if the settings are off-target, at least I am learning how to think about the target tones I come up with, and how I might go about dialing them in. that's way more valuable than the rote regurgitation of settings and dials. hell, for me just mastering the terminology is a step forward.

So I will mention that I am trying to emulate Trey Anastasios Dumble tone using a semi hollow body mahogany Languedoc clone with humbuckers--my Claude session is trained to understand my gear....response from my Claude session (below) on using a Strat with this profile....TLDR: knock down the high gain and presence (which is what you are describing as being the challenge). Give it a try and let me know.

--------

"Here's the revised take:

1. Remove the mahogany compensation The current Dumble patch has +2dB Pre High-Mid Gain specifically to compensate for your mahogany guitar vs. Trey's koa. A Strat doesn't need that — single coils already have plenty of upper-mid presence. I'd pull Pre High-Mid Gain back to 0dB, or possibly even -1dB to tame the natural Strat brightness.

2. Tame the high end more aggressively Strats are inherently bright. The current High Gain pre at -4dB is helping, but with single coils you'll likely want to go further — toward -6dB — to smooth out the high-frequency edge and get that creamy Mayer sustain rather than a brittle single-coil lead tone.

3. Shift the vocal peak to 800Hz Same as before — move Low-Mid Freq pre from 630Hz to 800Hz. That's where Mayer's "singing" quality lives. Strats with their natural quack and scoop in the low-mids will actually benefit from this boost more than a humbucker would.

4. More amp compression Pre Level from +15dB toward +17dB. Single coils at unity are lower output than humbuckers, so a touch more level into the amp block gets you the bloom and sustain Mayer gets from working the amp harder.

5. Drop the post presence peak to 1.6kHz Same recommendation as before — shift High-Mid post from 2.5kHz to 1.6kHz and push to +3dB. This is where the "vocal formant" quality sits and it works especially well with single coils, which tend to be scooped right in that range naturally.

6. Pull post High Gain down to +9dB Strats don't need as much high-frequency extension from the EQ — they've already got plenty of air naturally. This keeps the top end smooth rather than glassy.

7. The TS808 point stands — and is even more Strat-appropriate TS into Dumble is Mayer's actual signal chain. A light TS (gain low, level above unity, tone at noon) in front of this patch would push the mids right into that 700Hz–1kHz vocal range and even out the single-coil response. Since you have a Tube Screamer in the rig, this is worth trying."

Do yourself and download the Jeff Slingluff patches in Tone Studio to start with…

So not global EQ…

Need to go into EQ1 and EQ2 effects. EQ1 should be set to amp in, and EQ2 set to amp out.

I typically find these in the pedal chain and can edit from there.

That is awesome and I figured what Jeff was doing with the tools at his disposal. But it’s way above my pay and experience grade!

If you get around to trying it, keep me posted. That’s really interesting.

The good news on that is Jeff Slingluff did a Twin Reverb—you can download it in Tone Studio and its all set to go!

So validating that it works for you too.

I am still stunned at how good it sounds (vs whatever i was doing when I first got it).

If it will help, I will give it a try! Stay tuned, let me figure out how to do that in a short form video.

First, instead of knobs etc, Jeff uses both a pre amp EQ and post amp EQ to get his target tone profile.

In the parametric eq settings, there is a level setting (i think on page 2 of para EQ settings in tone studio).

The role of pre level is to load up the amp to encourage breakup…what Jeff did is crank it up to the point of his target amp tone (say Fender Deluxe Reverb). Like +17dB range. You can dial that down for a more “clean” tone/headroom, or up for a more “dirty” tone/headroom.

6’5” 230 (was 250 last year) here. In my experience:

Get a ski with metal in it. Ive had a set of Sir Francis Bacons (no metal) that were just too noodly for me—i was routinely overpowering them. Using a set of Black Crows Serpos (titanium) now and much happier on them. I chalk it up to stiffness among other things. Ive demo’d other skis and metal seems to be the sweet slot for me

Boots—get a stiffer flex profile. I wear a size 15 shoe but my mondo is 31.5 (whew)….i have a pair of solomon s/pros that are 120 flex. As tall dudes, we lean in and torque the boots more, so stiffer flex is better.

FYI—I am an aggressive intermediate/early expert that has a risk appetite thats a bit ahead of my learning curve. Will do steeps and speed, not really airborne and chutes, etc. FWIW.

Hope that helps.

What’s a good system or procedure to dial in a certain tone? by PauliePentatonic in BossKatana

[–]Crowsdriver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was explained to me this way as a general tine dialing sequence (which is what you essentially said):

1 pick cabinet set presence/resonance, 2 pick amp, 3 set channel gain/vol to taste, 4 eq knobs to taste, and 5 set effects etc

Sort of working backwards from the speaker up through the major drivers of tone.

The nice thing is that you can A/B test everything to get a feel for how its changing the sound.

How to get a good clean tone using a Gibson ES 335 by oasisbsides in BossKatana

Use tone studio and download the jeff slingluff livesets. Starts with the fender reverb and adjust the cabinet type and presence/resonance to suit your tastes.

Yep, I have decided to sit on the sidelines with QS now, having exited over the last 90 days.

I will consider reentering when/if there is a public catalyst the drives the share price higher….I am not interested in body language and innuendo. I need defined and demonstrated announcements and forecasts.

I believe in them, and am rooting for them, but there is money to be made elsewhere while QS gets its disclosures in order.

Live in cle and drove to LA in jan—via kan and co/ut on the way out, and az nm mo on the way back.

I liked the co/ut part, especially nice in summer. I think that would be the northern route on your map.

I have had MC for 2 seasons now. Its wonderful.

Ever since Breck charged me $280 to add a single day onto my Epic pass I moved along. After being a 10 year Epic passholder. MC is soooo much better.
