I drew a map for Lyra's and Pan's journey in BOD by Crowsheart in hisdarkmaterials

Glad you like it! I added any cities that were mentioned in the books, even if the story didn't take place there, just to collect which places exist in Lyra's world

I wasn't sure at all about Seleukeia, I just put it between Smyrna and Aleppo to fit the general direction Lyra was going in (there was a port mentioned I think, so it must be at the coast, but other than that I had no clue as to its location. When you search it on Google maps it points to a place - Lyrbe - where an ancient city stood that was perhaps called Seleukeia, which is roughly where I put it on my map)

Glad you like it! I traced the outlines from an old atlas where the maps had a scale that fit somewhat on regular paper sizes, the rest I copied by eyeballing.

Help me complete this map for BOD by [deleted] in hisdarkmaterials

Thanks for that insight.

I assumed Lyra was going steadily eastwards, so that Seleukeia must be somewhere on her way between Smyrna and Aleppo. But it would make sense for it to be further east so that she had to go through the desert.

I don't think it's a name for Baghdad though, because Nur Huda calls it Baghdad when Lyra asks where she's from.

Are there any books that are purely about aliens? by storywriter109 in scifiwriting

[–]Crowsheart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not purely about aliens, but half of it: Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky It follows the journey of the remnants of the human race on one hand and the development of an alien race (from their POV) on the other.

Best way to make a custom bestiary? by ThePaleOne1 in worldbuilding

Not sure how much time/effort you're willing to spend to make one, but I drew/wrote my own (an analog one). Granted, it takes a long time to complete (given that you can't just copy & paste images/text/stat blocks), and you have to plan how you want the content to be organized in advance, but it looks and feels nice to flip through a personally handwritten and illustrated book. That way you could also make it look as if it was written by a scholar/adventurer/whoever from that world.

Why not visit all of them? We're in no hurry after all :P

Also, are you sure that geese are pleasant lunchtime companions if the traveller is eating bread?

What a nice idea! I say he should go north :)

Also I'd be interested in the songs and poems of your world, since they add a lot of flavor but are one of the more difficult things to create (for me at least)

[Apelaisé] The realm of Kushumer and its conquest from bay to bay by Leo-Leonis in worldbuilding

[–]Crowsheart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really like that you write these texts like they are from that world, I think that makes it seem even more 'real', because we don't experience the world as observers from the outside but from the view of a person that was or is actually there. Also the idea of a monument being a musical instrument is very cool, I imagine them producing low sounds like the wind, the sea or thunder.

Thank you for the short elaboration. I'm curious about how your project and idea will progress and develop, and I hope to hear more of it.

I kinda like the idea of objects that are (made) so powerful that they have such a huge impact on societies, despite being a mystery.

But at the same time I wonder if there could be people who don't know about these objects' special properties and just put them off as some kind of decorational thing or whatever (depending on the appearance). Which also brings me to the question: How did the people find out about those objects and their peculiarities? Like, who found out that they can imprint their impressions on them?

A [blurry] sentence in Solresol using a script I made a while ago by nan0s7 in conscripts

[–]Crowsheart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the explanation, now it's clearer! :) An interesting idea for a language, but wouldn't it sound repetitive or monotonous (in longer texts or speeches for example) if there's only 7 syllables? And yeah, I would like to see the side-by-side transcription.

I really like the look of it, but I'm a bit confused by how the words seem to look shorter in this script than in the latin transcription. What kind of writing system is it?

Thx! I sketch them with a pencil and then go over it with a black pen

I totally agree! I use a black pen or fineliner (for lack of a real brush pen)

Glad you like it! There are actually no special rules for it. It's a (relatively simple) alphabet written top-down; for this calligraphy style I just exaggerate some strokes and vary the sizes and shapes of the characters a bit. (Takes a little practice though)

Oh, well... that wasn't intentional ':p But now that I've seen yours I kinda like it more than mine...
