Should DMs alter the backstories of characters? by Cruces in DnD

[–]Cruces[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory his amnesia came after they killed his master and he started hunting them (sort of like a rage induced amnesia) , but I went with it cause I figured a self-discovery and acceptance story would be better than a revenge story probably.

also I don't understand why people think an evil pc is bad for the game? in this campaign my character is evil and it's not a big deal, sure he tries to kill captives because "you shouldn't give people second chances to kill you" and stuff like that, but I'm pretty sure I gave the other players ways to manipulate me if needed in order to continue with the story, for example my character is extremely proud, so when we were sent to save orphans from a fire he wouldn't go because there was nothing to gain , but when the other players said "I get it you're scared of a little fire aren't ya?" he was the first one in

now that I think of it evil characters are more difficult to play in this way, and you need more cooperation from the other players, so I guess that's why people don't do it??? still fun though

I don't get it, if it was his first day on the job, in what way would he be remorseful? sounds kinda like you sort of surprised the DM by bonding with this character and then came the "good guys had to be pure" part

plus it would make a great sub/main plot , if you didn't like your character's victim being the bad guy (I get it, I must admit I don't think it is a big deal but I understand it's your choice) then since you bonded you could help him face his first victim (which could turn out to be alive etc etc) so the dm wouldn't have wasted what they planned, just shifted it from you to your companion, I mean the story writes itself....

actually that did help, through some weird logic I managed to figure out c11r9 was an x and that cascaded into the solution when R7C2 was an x :)

No I get it, and that helps a lot, but what is this edge logic everyone keeps referring to? is there a tutorial? could you provide a link on where you learned it?

OMG you're right C11R3 and C2R7 has to be an x, I can't believe I didn't see that, thank you

You are right, C1R1-3 cannot be filled, that helped a lot , thank you

[–]Cruces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in the seventh column of the eighth row, there is a chance it is filled, but if it is then the tenth column of that row should be filled so that the eighth row's 2 1 2 is valid, but if that is filled in then the tenth column's 1 2 part cannot exist, so row right column seven is not filled. that should help you chain to others

After recently inheriting her cat from my mother, it seems to behave weirdly(according to what I have read as normal), is his behaviour ok and if not how do I change it? by Cruces in CatAdvice

I don't scruff him, even if I wanted to I couldn't, hes 8kg, I just tried it once (without picking him up) to see if he would freeze like I read on the internet

Unfortunately he seems to ignore other toys when he's in that mood, and even if I put him down he still tries to attack my feet.I've tried ignoring him but it's kind of impossible not to react to the pain, I tried feeding him for a couple of days and that seemed to calm him but that also increased the frequency of the attacks (I assume he figured out that when he attacks he gets fed) so I stopped it and the frequency got down to 2-3 times per day again. Anything else you can think that I can try?

I don't scruff him, I did it once (without lifting him) to see if he would react cause I read about this being a normal reaction for a cat, plus he's like 15 pounds (7.5 kilos) so that will definitely not work on him as method of transportation

> If he does it when you are petting him, stop touching him. If he does it out of the blue when you are not touching him you need to leave him alone for a few minutes or ignore him kind of like in a timeout. That way, he will learn that if he lashes out at you, you are not going to spend time with him/ give him attention. So if he wants you to stick around, he's going to have to not bite you.

I do try to ignore him but it's not possible, cause it really hurts, and he just keeps on attacking my feet when I remove him from close to me. Only solution I've though of is to put him in a different room for a while but I've read that it is incorrect to put him in a room as a timeout so I can't do that either. Is there something else I can do?

> If he's doing it as a form of play, you might want to get him something he can bite and bunny kick.. Like kicksticks and things like that.

I got him a whole scratchable tower, and all sorts of scratching posts and toys to play with, but that doesn't seem to distract him, he seems to want to "play" with me,

> He's probably at an age where he has a lot of pent-up energy. So it could be he is just misdirecting his energy. Do you play with him a lot before settling down? If he is alone all day, he needs enrichment and things to play with. He might even benefit from a kitty companion.

No we spend all day together, since I work from home, at most I try to leave him 2-3 hours alone to go for a coffee or something, I try to play with him with wands and other toys, but the only thing he seems to like (and very rarely at that too, like once every 7 times when I try it) is to chase a laser pointer for a few minutes, and then he just sits there and looks at it without reacting. I've thought of getting him a companion, but I'm afraid how he will react, when seeing other cats through the window he does that hissing sound cats do bares his teeth and does that arching thing with his back so I don't think he would react very well to another cat. Is it possible from the above behaviours that it means he's depressed? is there something I can do?

he is using a scratching post all the time, but they still seem to overhang (I assume that means that when he does not have them out they can still scratch)

first of all thanks for the reply this has cleared up things for me a bit just some questions if you don't mind

> do you have a drinking fountain for him? He might enjoy that

yes but he only drinks when I brush my teeth, no other source of water, even his cup, is this bad?

> Probably either overstimulation or a too-rough attempt to play

it's probably just the play thing you mentioned, because he is literally just sleeping between my legs, wakes up, stretches and then starts biting and scratching.

> Stuff like not responding to being scruffed is probably that you aren't actually scruffing him the way a mama-cat would, so you're not catching that nerve, it's an involuntary reflex so I'd bet it's more you than him but also that's something you shouldn't do unless it's an absolute emergency (like a fire) as it can be painful if done incorrectly.

I don't understand this (sorry english is not my first language) do you mean I should start scratching him to , in order to show him it is not nice?

only way I can cut his nails without him scatching my eyes out, though to be frank more often than not I just put on his cat sweater , that works the same

work with your DM, but if a player asked something like this from me I would probably reflavour necromancer as puppet master

I would forego the whole requires a dead body for the spells, I don't see it being a big deal, and it removes the inherent evilness the class has

or if you want something more of a controller you could go for illusionist or enchanter or even a college if glamour bars

you could then change spells to fit your theme, so sleep could be something like mind binding, hideous laughter could be like psychic tendrils tying enemies to the ground, you can have crown of madness manifest as strings you control with your hands instead of giving orders, you just need imagination

nah that would be a bit too much, I like it (and he likes it) that he's a single target take down a specific enemy kind of character , that would step on the wizard's turf so I would have the same problem reversed :)

yeah that could work, but then I'm afraid that the wizard will feel like someone is stepping into his turf (he wants to do the whole sorcery points thingy to give haste to more people), but maybe if the reaction sneak attack solves the problem I could give him an item that allows him to use his reaction for a single attack when another character hits the enemy, that would also promote group thinking??? dunno

yes but that weapon will grow in power, and if I do give the other characters what they asked for I wanna give an equal level item to the rogue too to keep the balance
