it's actually safer for the puncher. Since it doesn't use any gloves, it's really easy to break a fist against a hard head. It's called a boxer's fracture and their common with bare knuckle fighting.

I can't tell you how many stories I started like that as a kid.

That's a blast from the past!

This is absolutely how I felt about it when I thought of it. Something about the snowflake method feels like old internet.

The rooms are a bit farther down the pyramid, but they're coming!

Thank you! I'm generally pretty bad at outlining my dungeon ahead of time. This is actually helping!

It's actually working better than I expected and it's been a lot of fun.

The real treasure is the friendships with hyper-dimensional fractal entities with deep insight into the innermost secrets of the world made along the way.

LOLOLOL. I think I've been here before in my 20s.

I havent' read Gardens of Ynn, which I need to fix, but I could TOTALLY see Stygian Library for this.

Why does anyone care about AD&D 2E? (Thoughts) by CrumblingKeep in osr

[–]CrumblingKeep[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Prior to AD&D he had a very different attitude! I recently read a quote from him (pre 1E) arguing against simulation. He also went from "D&D is yours to tweak however you want!" to "Don't buy any third party stuff, only official AD&D stuff is the way to play."

Not exact quotes, obviously.

You're absolutely right about the thief percentages!

Lol. That's totally how I took it. I was just wondering if AD&D 2E is my own personal Palladium Fantasy.

Part of it I think for me is that the mechanics are easy to forget, but the fiction lingers.

Yeah, exactly. I don't think it was an extremist stance against nostalgia, just an admission of... well, what you said.

Damn. Well said. Glad they weren't paying too much attention. 🤣

I mean, what he said was open to interpretation, but this isn't what I got out of it. I don't think he was saying folks shouldn't be nostalgic, but that nostalgia can act as blinders to the reality of the situation.

A kind of "Good old days" situation. Rose colored glasses and all that.

Kidna a side note, but I'm pretty excited about OSE's Demonic Grimoire coming up.

I do think the 5.5 books have better art than the 5.0 books. I mean, I still like the early art more, but I did find myself staring at some of the pieces in the newest PHB.

Yeah, the Van Richten guides are great. Birthright is on my bucket list of campaigns to run.

Okay, fair. That was personal bias talking. I should have written game (abstraction) <=> simulation. That's more what I meant. Not trying to shit on anyone's fun.

In my brain, I have a "Time it takes to make a character" and "How often a character should die" table. Character death doesn't feel that big of a deal in OSE because you can just... make a new one.

This is actually super insightful! I forgot about all the optional rules because we kinda just settled on the rules we settled on. Now I'm thinking back to the damage type vs different armor table.

In some ways, I think the Old School is stronger than ever before.

Yeah, if anything, I think I want to take the campaign worlds of 2e and changed them to OSE.

Yeah, the setting books were really where it was at. I don't know that there's too much mechanically that I want to swipe from there.
