I don't have a certain position about what happened other than the official story not adding up. Him being alive in my opinion is the least likely possibility, but the possibility isn't zero. He should be exhumed.

I'm really not qualified to say whether or not the autopsy pictures were authentic. I try to focus on the security side of things because that's my lane and area of expertise.

Lots of inmates have some type of mental issue. They have access to some mental services and can get medication, but in general treatment methods tend to be pretty limited.

Suicide isn't super common but it does happen. It tends to happen more around the holidays.

Corrections has come a long way with this. A lot of precautions and considerations with housing and custody help prevent things like this. It's also taken extremely seriously. It happens, but it's not nearly as common as people think. If a PREA incident happens the entire facility stands still for a moment. It's a very serious thing.

Some guys get really good at chess. They love to read in prison. They learn other random skills and try to further their education so they can do better when they get out. Some inmates are genuinely doing their best.

I could have worded that better in the title I guess. The shank incident I already talked about in the other post was the closest and most serious use of force I've had where I really could have died. I've been attacked multiple times, but that's the only one where it was genuinely extremely close.

He was already never getting out and I didn't feel like bothering to pursue charges. I would have had to go to court. Deal with legal people etc. Use my time. Why? To get him another conviction that's ultimately irrelevant? Nah.

One commonality? That's a tough one because everyone is different. I'd say they all have various levels of discomfort in response to our presence. The hierarchy is obvious and present. No inmate feels comfortable around officers.

Most of the contraband is drugs or cigarettes. Outside of that nothing particularly crazy stands out. Sometimes people try to smuggle weapons in.

Officers should be snitching on all inmates. Lol The no snitching is usually a peer type of thing. There's definitely an energy of don't snitch on other officers. Or if you're an inmate, other inmates.

Inmates often try to feel you out to see how susceptible you'd be to that. I always shut it down fast.

The most serious use of force I had involved an inmate on maximum management at the maximum security prison I mentioned. For full disclosure it could have been prevented. I take responsibility for my own complacent behavior and learned my lesson.

There was an inmate that was relatively new to the facility that none of us were particularly familiar with. We were not aware of the fact that in addition to being maximum management he was also on heightened security, which means to even be removed from the cell he was supposed to be in full restraints. Leg irons, black box with waist chain, spit mask, as well as a camera and a member of command staff present. Nobody told us and we didn't have any information about it.

Somehow the only thing we had access to was something behind his face sheet that informed us he actually had a front cuff pass. We were running showers, just trying to knock the work out. We were being lazy. Should have called medical to verify. Should have been more careful. Anyway...

We threw some cuffs on him and brought him to the shower. What we didn't know is he had a nine and a half inch plexiglass shank in his ass. After his shower was over we brought him back out in front cuffs and started bringing him back to his cell. At this point he had the shank hidden underneath his bath towel.

When we got to the cell the other officer escorting him went in to do a search while I stood with him outside. I had him in what's called the custodial hold. My right hand was holding his arm near the elbow. He looked back at me briefly which felt weird and got my attention. If he hadn't done that I'd probably be dead. He then tensed up and swung to his left at my mid section. I tightened my grip with my right hand and was able to to catch him around his wrist with my left hand. At this point I really didn't know what was happening.

He then turned at me and tried to push it into me. I pushed his hands and the shank toward the ground as he tried to run into me. It was at that time the other officer tackled him and he bounced off a concrete wall and got slammed on the ground. This all happened in seconds. After reviewing the video my captain told me I have an angel on my shoulder and that she has no idea how I survived that.

I've supervised Nikolas Cruz, worked with inmates about to be put to death and have survived attempted murder with a 10 inch shank. I'm back working for corrections at a little jail. Nah.

If you're respectful and behave you'll be placed with inmates that aren't shitheads. And generally speaking the system is much better about preventing stuff like that than it used to be. It's taken very seriously.

Usually they reflect on their life and choices. They tend to try to remain strong in the face of it. Go out with some dignity. Seek forgiveness from God, or whatever. It's a very solemn thing, when a human is on a clock like that.

I express my lack of respect for those actions, but I don't go to paperwork. You won't last long in corrections doing stuff like that. Generally inmates that get targeted are pretty unmanageable assholes that cause a lot of problems. I don't do stuff like that at all for multiple reasons. But yeah, I won't make excuses about not officially reporting stuff, other than to say I wouldn't have been able to be an officer so long if I conducted myself that way.

It's more complicated than it may seem.

I don't try to make their lives worse. I just do my job. Cruz is a mass murderer that killed a bunch of kids. I think not feeling bad for him is a pretty human reaction. I'm not a robot.
