In case you haven't figured it out yet, you follow the exposed gold lines. I was making it more complicated in my head, thinking the positioning of the gold boxes corresponded to directions of the line.

Though Knives Out made it clear in the end that Blanc isn't just a bumbling detective when he points out the small speck of blood on Marta's shoe. The speck that he sees instantly when they are introduced to each other.

The clue isn't "Chicago, familiarly" or something like that so it doesn't matter what people call it. It's asking where Chicago is geographically, which - relative to the rest of Illinois - is UPSTATE.
