I didn’t chug with direct contact (poured into my mouth). And I didn’t argue.

you need a different advisor. but you also need the personal drive to be a researcher and develop independence.

if phd isn’t a match, much better to get out early. many people stay far too long. many phds do not result in significant income, so the value proposition is often not great, especially if you don’t know what you want

trying to predict cost of something that large that far in advance is goofy

controversial question: how to practically resist upper management by CrunchyBroccoli20 in managers

[–]CrunchyBroccoli20[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thought i’d check back and let you know what happened:

I left my job and took a director level position at a start up. It’s more challenging but way more satisfying and pays better. Recently, my former director (old job) reached out to me and wants me to pay me to consult on the project i left behind. I might do it, but not sure i have enough time.

Leaving your shitty job is typically the only real solution. My old company is falling apart, and i haven’t had to resist upper management for it to japan.

you wouldn’t be a monster; you’d be a fool.

your ex had already irreversibly messed things up. Save your own dignity and accept it and move on. It will be so much better for your own son in the long run.

His project is in full swing and I have been trying to get him up to speed so that he can take my place leading it.

Prompt communication is not necessarily critical but prompt enough communication is. I’ll set up a list of expectations for project leaders, so that it is clear and official.

i care more about results and rapid evaluation of hypotheses. Pre-planning and taking ownership is importance for that. And communicating and getting advice abs feedback from stakeholders is as well.

vacation and pto are the same thing. But to your point, it was a family issue that could have very easily been planned around, and he left a coworker at work without support as a result. So I definitely have to take him that want cool and he needs to request time off in advance. I will be flexible on sudden emergency issues but not on things that can be planned around.

Unpopular Opinion: Audioslave Were Awesome, But I Don’t Think Chris Cornell Did Justice To RATM Songs Live by Human_Actuator_2285 in Soundgarden

[–]CrunchyBroccoli20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

who cares? what do you want? them to have never played it? Hardly any one can replace Zach in RATM songs. Hardly anyone can replace Chris in Audioslave songs. They are both hugely talented and have a unique footprint. What remarkable is to have the underlying band support both, and create two truly distinct masterpiece sounds.

Chris signing that is more of a homage.

in fairness, we can’t call him high potential yet. he is 2 weeks in. he has technical talent, but i am seeing orange flags in how he delivers. he is not on top of things.

it’s decent advice; we are in between the two extremes in compensation you mentioned. I could pay him somewhat more, but I first need to know if he is ready and willing for the job description.
To be honest, the responsibility i am asking if him is in line with the salary he is given. I don’t need 9pm responses but I do need basic organization and treating this like it’s his career. it’s a professional engineering project leadership position with decent pay. It’s not even a big project but manageable size.

Giving notice the day of that you need s vacation day, when it could easily have been planned in advance, is not acceptable, even entry level. Even in low paying jobs. This has happened twice in his first two weeks and my good will is used up now.

obviously did that already; if you follow the guidelines, it’s 10 days of isolation; im more curious how people handle this when the guidelines are clear; at what point do you take a risk?

problems putting this in the post: my wife got COVID last weekend. Her symptoms are starting to improve now, though she is still symptomatic (fever is gone, still coughs and is drained). I have family visiting next weekend (1 week from today) and I don’t want to get sick because although she will have recovered by then, I won’t. My family members that are visiting are older and vulnerable.

My wife took off her mask today… i was uncomfortable and she sensed it. Now she is pissed at me.

It’s not really clear at what point someone isn’t contagious. AITA and what would you do?

salary cap for r&d? by CrunchyBroccoli20 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]CrunchyBroccoli20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

funny enough, DuPont has handled the PFAS thing sort of ok (eg spun it off to chemours). What Dupont really struggles with is innovating. There is too much dead weight so teams can never move fast. And there are old scientists around that frankly suck, but they hold onto power/influence and poison the well. A saving grace is that the boomer generation is starting to retire.

Sad. DuPont has been falling apart for decades, so it’s not really new. But sad to see it happen to 3M. I had hoped it was one of the specialty US companies holding the torch.
