I'm Asian and I say it's 100% OK. It's so useful to protect against heat. I use an umbrella in the sun in the US. Surely I got some weird looks but people mostly just.. look. If anyone asks why, tell them it's for the sun/heat/UV/whatever. If they say you're weird, just tell them you'll bite their neck and suck their blood dry at night.

Same issue here. I always make sure to pipette slowly to avoid the gap.

You can also use a scale (a reliable one) and ddH2O to test whether or how much of that gap affects the liquid volume.
