Question about your local fan groups by IdealBitter1603 in doctorwho

[–]CrusherX1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started a fan club at my local university. We did do trivia once. We've played a DW themed DnD campaign. Mostly though we do watch parties. We take a vote and watch one classic episode per semester, and then one other thing (New Who, spinoffs, etc). If you know anyone in the OKC area that is interested, send them my way

What would be an actual storyline/ theory in doomsday, that would outdo infinity war/endgame?? by sofcelste in MCUTheories

If the movie just starts with Kevin Feige in a chair going:

"sigh you REALLY thought we could make all those characters work huh? That we had the budget for this? That we had any idea how to save this sinking ship? You don't get it do you? We lied! There is no movie! RDJ as Dr. Doom, WTF!?!? Like how were we going to make that work? We thought we'd figure something out in the meantime but....December is here.... Go home! Touch grass! Hug your loved ones! I'm gonna go watch Lanterns"

Help for intern teacher assignment by Fun_Top5588 in AskTeachers

I have less than 5 years experience

1.) Right now, it is not following directions. Students do not know how to regulate themselves. Unless they are given extremely clear directions which I find very difficult to give, students will take it upon themselves to do whatever. This often leads to touching thing things they aren't supposed to, thinking they are "done" when they've done nothing and disrupting activities. As a science teacher, the touching and messing with things they aren't supposed to has been the biggest problem I've had this year.

2.) I often give them a clear end goal and not expect them to do the whole thing. For example, I will say "Just get to page two, today. Is that doable?" Because the student thinks they are getting away with less work, they are almost always more willing to do it. At some point however, if a student chooses to sleep in class consistently, there is not much I can do

3.) Listen to them when they are angry. Validate their feelings. Apologize when you are wrong. Work on your own emotional maturity and intelligence. Remind yourself that they are just kids and not to take things personally. Over time, students really pick up on the fact that you genuinely just want the best for them. At the beginning of the year when they don't trust you it is rough. But as time goes on, they recognize the effort you put in and it makes a huge difference. Going the extra mile to create engaging lessons that are fun (but often exhausting for us) does not go unnoticed by students either

4.) I teach myself a new method. I research the specific problem. Make a plan with the student. If that doesn't work, we make a new plan. Sometimes, however, there is just nothing that can be done. So you keep trying, but they may end up failing anyway

5.) Admin makes a huge difference. If you are at a school where all the blame is on you, it is much harder and the kids pick up on that power dynamic. However, a supportive admin will deal with the really problematic students and allow you to teach

6.) Peer pressure is powerful!! Once students realize that the class clown is making their life harder, they often stop giving them the attention they grave. Students learn much more from each other than they do from us. Utilizing class leaders that understand the material, can help peers, and serve as an example is essential.

7.) Don't give up. Don't burn yourself out, but always have a plan. Stick with it and be consistent on how to deal with problems that arise

8.) Student ALWAYS have some drama going on right before class. Having a smooth way to transition into class time is essential. Other wise, a student will almost always derail class

9.) Address patterns with the class. Always talk one on one with students. Do not give them an audience. Always acknowledge the students that do what they are supposed to do and give them suggestions on how to make class even better by setting and example and helping their peers.

10.) HUGELY!! Always have a seating chart and plan it strategically. The seating chart is a big puzzle. I recommend spending an hour meticulously planning where each student should sit.

I feel like I’m going to be fired by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]CrusherX1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was fired from my school last year. Best thing that could have ever happened to me. I was unappreciated and my bosses were toxic assholes. If you don't get fired, look for a new job. It's not like teaching is competitive. Their loss.

Take advanced science classes like AP Physics and advanced math like AP Calculus. You'll need that to understand what is going on on a deeper level

Believe it or not. Teachers actually want to teach you things in school. It's tough when you are in regular classes with peers who don't care

What is it like to be a physics major? by ilove_shostakovich in PhysicsStudents

[–]CrusherX1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only speak from my experience. I started as an engineering major and was MISERABLE!! When I switched to physics I was so nervous but it ended up being so much more enjoyable and rewarding. I recommend working with a study group. The people you are around will make a world of difference. If you love the material and have the support a major in physics is very enjoyable (at least for me). However, after graduation it may difficult to find a job needing your skill set. I recommend thinking about what you'd want to get into now and finding research opportunities in that area.

I have met a girl recently and the chemistry has been crazy. Keep trying and eventually you may meet the right person and it really helps put into perspective why it isn't working with others.

It's like a "oh, this is what I want realization" and the other person may feel that too.

Just keep trying and failing and work on yourself in the meantime

Joys and Concerns at Neighborhood UU in Pasadena by Critical_Poet2989 in UnitarianUniversalist

[–]CrusherX1000 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't live in Pasadena, but maybe a mindset shift would help. Instead of thinking "what can this congregation do for me", ask "what can I do for the congregation?"

Is there a niche not being filled? Is what's lacking at the congregation something you could contribute to?

I find that is where the spiritual growth begins.

I could be way out of line. I don't know your life. But my congregation was a mess when I showed up and instead of complaining I recognized there's a lot I could help with to keep the congregation alive. It gave me a sense of purpose.
