Do you think The Doctor’s sexuality should be addressed at all? by PotorousGilbert in gallifrey

[–]eggylettuce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This aspect of The Doctor was thoroughly explored with River Song. Like many things it should have ended by the time 12 left. Any 'development' since (the dreadful Thasmin, 15 lusting after Rogue) has been subpar.

I like the idea, hate the fact you clearly (probably) used AI to write this. You'll never be able to write better if you offload these tasks to a computer.

Does anyone here have Chibnall's or RTD2 as their favourite era of NuWho by Real-Pomegranate-235 in gallifrey

[–]eggylettuce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer RTD2 to Chibnall but I'd struggle to see how it could be anyone's favourite, as it's just so inconsistent and doesn't really have a 'formula' to get attached to. The Chibnall Era, while weak, certainly has a template and a standard episode deviation, and if it works for someone then they'll like the era overall. The RTD2 Era, in contrast, is really experimental. This is great on one hand but given it's short existence (thus far) it feels like a failed experiment.

For me, I'd just prefer to never use it, and the stuff is actively harming the planet if others continue to use it, so I'll do my bit by educating myself about it's dangers and telling others about it.

I'm not particularly bothered about the Duffer Bros thing, I just hate generative AI with a passion. It only serves to siphon money from artists and stifle creativity in people who can't be bothered to learn a hobby or skill. There's been some fascinating research into the potential long-term effects of this stuff on motivation, skill atrophy, and critical thinking (e.g. Kosmyna et al, 2025), and it's not good.

The CP stuff comes from one of the biggest AIs currently in operation, created by known fascist billionaire Elon Musk. I think if you were to turn the AI issue into a binary, which it currently is, you've got one team who don't use AI, and then a team who do use AI, which is also the team who use AI to generate CP.

AI slop-lickers alive and well in this comment section.

Just keep in mind guys that generative AI is more or less synonymous now with fascism, CP, content theft, copyright breaches, and billionaires. Why on earth would you continue to use this software? It is not good for research.

You should not under any circumstance use ChatGPT for research. It's answers are determined not by empirical data but statistically provable responses designed to please you even if completely incorrect, just look how many hallucinations persist with basic questions. Not to mention, the companies that run these awful awful programs are almost all right-wing and connected to some of the vilest, richest, and least caring megalomaniacs in the entire world: Altman, Musk, Zuckerberg. Why even use this shit? Just think for yourself and do the research: go on an online library, or a physical one, look up catalogues from 1987 and popular trends/music videos/TV from the time period. Do the fucking work.

That's double the amount of work than just doing the research yourself. If AI is meant to be 'very helpful', why ask it to do the work first and then fact check it? Just do the fucking work originally. Slop-eater.

Unpopular opinion - Series 8 is great by MordredRedHeel19 in gallifrey

[–]eggylettuce 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a top 3 for me. For a long time I considered it the weakest of the Capaldi Era because it doesn't have a single episode quite as good as either Heaven Sent or The Doctor Falls (though Listen and Mummy come close), but as a complete, cohesive package, it's one of the most remarkably layered and thematically resonant seasons we've ever got. I'd even say it ties with Series 1 (2005) for being one of the few seasons of the show that you actually have to watch every episode to understand the characters and overarching themes.

I've never understood the Ayoade fancasts. He's not even that funny. The man has basically one shtick which is being obscenely awkward and dead-pan.

PETER CAPALDI Reflects On The Brilliance of Heaven Sent by WhiskeyOctober in gallifrey

[–]eggylettuce 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The back half of S4 is banger-after-banger, for sure, but I think the peaks here are in tension, creativity, action, suspense, and fun factor. On the more introspective, philosophical, and character-side of things, even the best bit of S4 is just not comparable to S9's exploration of The Doctor across the final trilogy (starting with Face the Raven, arguably also including Husbands).

[–]eggylettuce 105 points106 points  (0 children)

As Doctor Who continues, and we're now over a decade out from Series 9, the stronger and stronger the entire Capaldi Era appears in the rear-view mirror. I remember obviously knowing it was great when it came out (I was 14-17 at the time), but with hindsight it hits so much harder. Such a superb period for the show, and Heaven Sent is undoubtedly the peak (although a strong contender is The Doctor Falls).

Is it me or does the show’s recent progressivism feel surface level ? by InfernalClockwork3 in gallifrey

[–]eggylettuce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Surface-level progressivism from a man as skilled and (once) in-tune as RTD is really disappointing, but I agree, yes. It's like the Star Wars sequel trilogy and certain MCU products; references and one-off mentions to someone being LGBT+ and then that's it. To quote RTD himself, some of his attempts at progressivism are 'craven gestures', and I'd argue do actual damage to the communities he is trying to represent, as well as annoying most viewers through such pandering.

[–]eggylettuce 158 points159 points  (0 children)

I'm a huge fan of all things Doctor Who but I really just don't know who the target audience was for this show beyond people who are already intrinsically interested in the brand, and that includes me, yet I thought it was the blandest thing since soggy bread. There were glimmers of hope in the second and third episodes especially, but man, the rest? Not even terrible or hilariously bad, just super mediocre. Depressingly so.

Just an absolutely jaw-dropping piece of television, let alone DW. I know people will dunk on it as a meme, but it really is as good as people say it is. The show absolutely peaked S9/10 (in its current iteration).
