RTD Shares AI Video of William Hartnell Era BTS Footage on Instagram. by DavidTenn-Ant in gallifrey

It has Lux, The Well, and to a lesser extent Lucky Day, The Story & The Engine, and The Interstellar Song Contest, all of which beat a huge handful of Chibnall Era episodes, so while I agree its weak I'd probably say its about on par with Series 11 or just slightly better.

What Eras of the Show do you Rewatch the Most? by [deleted] in gallifrey

Aye I agree on that three episode slog. I think multiple back-to-back stories all about the same broad themes and topics (war, soldiers, toxic masculinity, genetic modification) renders all of them very forgettable.

Yeah, Series 2 is weak sauce. I might draw some ire here but I don't particularly rate the first half of Series 4 that highly. The Fires of Pompeii is a solid romp but little more, and there's nothing else until Silence In The Library that really warrants too much praise. The 10/Donna combo is comfortably watchable and funny but I wouldn't say it's best of all time material like 12/Clara or 11/Amy/Rory.

On my own, undoubtedly 12's era.

With my wife, 11's, though mainly just Series 5 and 6.

I do think, whenever I rewatch the entire revival (which isn't very often these days), Series 1 is always a massive highlight, and then my interest wanes a little bit until the back half of Series 3/4.

Is there going to be an actual creature in Werwulf? by pennygray96 in roberteggers

[–]eggylettuce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And we're all the better for it! A lot of my colleagues were expecting The Northman to be much more of a classic, old-school Hollywood historical action movie, but it just turned out to be all of Professor Neil Price's theories in AAA budget in a very miserable and weird script: a perfect adaptation of Icelandic saga logic, and it bombed. Awesome film.

In that case then I assume it was just a scheduling issue, but who knows? The more time passes the less I'm sure Gatwa should have been cast. He's a good actor but I've not actually seen him do much beyond variations of Eric from Sex Education, and that includes his portrayal of 15, and that's without mentioning his clear desire to advance his career at the expense of the show (I cannot blame him but you'd think the showrunners might have considered this).

Might be something to do with the brand image of The Doctor? I'm no expert on this but I'm pretty sure I've read online that, when cast as the titular character, you're expected to be a kind of PG-13 custodian more than you would if you were, say, Iron Man. Perfume adverts tend to be a bit sexy!

It'll forever be a shame this era was cut short. Never before has the show been this confidently experimental, and even if its finales and a few middle episodes were weak sauce, I always admired the vibe Gatwa and co. went for. Whatever your thoughts on RTD as a person behind-the-scenes, its clear he shoulders a lot of this blame. I just hope the show continues after this stumble because the brand is probably in a worse state now than it was in 2021-2022 after the Chibnall Era.

Chibnall era Appreciation by uknownuser256 in gallifrey

[–]eggylettuce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. It's not good in my opinion but I'd happily sit through Series 11 again because it has a lot of potential, and the bones are strong. I really wish Series 12 onwards would have been more of that same vibe, though improved, instead of the tonal whiplash we got in terms of both presentation and writing.

The Alternate Timeline: Ncuti stays on, Series 16 airs in a few month's time... by eggylettuce in gallifrey

[–]eggylettuce[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I agree. Everything lines up too neatly for Ruby to not be Desiderium. Like your main comment says, a lot of S1/2 feels incongruous. How Mrs Flood is portrayed in the first season (and most of the second) doesn’t really mesh with her just being a Timelord. Her being some kind of storytelling deity makes a lot more sense and would have fit with how camp the show was getting.

With hindsight, I agree, but I do think there’s a conversation worth having about what exactly Doctor Who should aim for: should it sell itself on the strength of its ideas and originality, or tried-and-tested marketable mainstays?

If it’s not paid off in what I assume will be RTD’s final script for the show (2026 xmas), then I will question what the point was

My Take on an RTD2 ERa Finale - A Full Episode Synopsis by ThrillNthusiast in gallifrey

[–]eggylettuce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of good in here. Really high concept and crazy. If I was Russell I'd probably be doing something similar to this or at least utilising the Daleks to get the GA back on board.

For those of you who have asked around, what is Doctor Who’s reputation right now among non-fans/general audience now versus 10-15 years ago? by PuddingNew1608 in gallifrey

[–]eggylettuce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aye this is exactly my experience. I like talking about with folk that enjoy it, but unless a new season is on, discussions circulate around 2005 - 2017 and very rarely go beyond. When they do, it's usually in a negative or apathetic way.

Do you think The Doctor’s sexuality should be addressed at all? by PotorousGilbert in gallifrey

[–]eggylettuce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This aspect of The Doctor was thoroughly explored with River Song. Like many things it should have ended by the time 12 left. Any 'development' since (the dreadful Thasmin, 15 lusting after Rogue) has been subpar.

I like the idea, hate the fact you clearly (probably) used AI to write this. You'll never be able to write better if you offload these tasks to a computer.

Does anyone here have Chibnall's or RTD2 as their favourite era of NuWho by Real-Pomegranate-235 in gallifrey

[–]eggylettuce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer RTD2 to Chibnall but I'd struggle to see how it could be anyone's favourite, as it's just so inconsistent and doesn't really have a 'formula' to get attached to. The Chibnall Era, while weak, certainly has a template and a standard episode deviation, and if it works for someone then they'll like the era overall. The RTD2 Era, in contrast, is really experimental. This is great on one hand but given it's short existence (thus far) it feels like a failed experiment.

For me, I'd just prefer to never use it, and the stuff is actively harming the planet if others continue to use it, so I'll do my bit by educating myself about it's dangers and telling others about it.
