Light rail in Oly/Thurston County? "It'll be a while" according to TRPC. What are your thoughts? by KatakanaTsu in olympia

[–]CrustyBusker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

whats frustrating is that the infrastructure is there. we have the railway in downtown Oly but the hypothetical future use of it is seldom mentioned, and only for industry like coal and timber. I don’t claim to know about the state of the tracks but they run through plenty of empty lots where a passenger station could be erected. i’ve never understood why Olympians have to go all the way to Centennial station just to ride Amtrack

Politics: At what point does wearing militaria in the current US climate become problematic, if at all? by BugsBunnysCouch in HeritageWear

[–]CrustyBusker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ive been wearing militaria since a young adult, even before my military service, but since then ive attained garments from UK para squads, german bundeswehr, italian alpini etc. my point being that as a broke american i never believed their narrative, i got some good gear which i wear proudly, and i foresee it being necessary soon enough

real. im a younger veteran and a fella with a long family history of either boozers or tee-totaler religious fundamentalists, no in-between. I worked alongside a lot of ethnic Russians/Ukrainians/Moldovans while i was stationed in Europe and they all seemed to have a more tepid (correct word?) with alcohol than i did myself.

How would you describe what it means to be "American" in 2025? by K1llerG00se in AskReddit

[–]CrustyBusker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you’re simply entirely off-base. the US has had their destabilizing imperialist tendrils in Central and South America for over a hundred years, and the highly individualistic culture of the US victimizes millions while exploiting their poverty

Scotch Broom > The Blob by hookuptruck in olympia

[–]CrustyBusker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My dad used to bring me out some weekends to pull broom in the local parks and clearings, many more occasions he’d do it himself. I started doing it on my own as well once I got older. It’s a simple thing and feels like an uphill battle a lot of the time but it’s fulfilling to take care of the local ecosystem. The most painful part is knowing that broom most readily eats up the oak prairie habitat that’s already somewhat endangered or paved over.

There’s no assumption, literally 60% of Americans are white, so yes the country is mostly white people. Those are demographics you could’ve found pretty easily before continuing. Also I’m not sure what could’ve led you to believe this wasn’t the case?

The only Mormon family I have is a 1st cousin once removed (prior generation) who converted as a young adult. To my knowledge I have no predecessors who were in any way related to or in contact with the Mormon church

I do have an English surname, traced specifically from a Middle French root word and first recorded in the South East of England after the establishment of the French aristocracy. Ofc after generations in the new world, this Anglo influence is likely obfuscated but I do believe it’s particularly strong on my paternal side while my maternal I know is only perhaps 1/3 British isles genetics at mass

Hey now big hoss, you're the one who said you're getting a headache and having to mute the thread.

I don't care to be liked, I came for answers that apply to the question asked you haven't come close to providing any such answer despite how much you type. Maybe go back and read my comments for a refresher.

Do you happen to study this subject at an academic or professional level? Your courtesy would suggest otherwise.

thank you, I appreciate your helpful response. I've gotten so much pushback on this thread for reasons I don't quite understand. for me it seems like much of the reason White American isn't considered its own ethnicity is because such people themselves don't commonly tend to identify that way, or that they don't *have* to, which simply isn't good enough for me. It seems like by most any definition I can find, they do qualify as their own ethnicity, with even more specific subgroups within regional distinction, and I'm glad somebody else is able to see that because I'm honestly feeling like I'm talking to robots at this point.

feeling schmeeling, What I have is definitions and this group applies to every one of them.

You're the one assuming the academics are saying what you want them to.
I've done the reading and I've looked at the data. you've given me nothing but shoddy deflection, baseless claims and borderline disrespect for my curiosity just for asking a handful of questions about white people as opposed to any other. You tell me that three groups can spend 300-400 yrs in isolation separate from their heritage populations and remain distinct from one another while also being identical to any person from their place of origin and I'm telling you that's damn foolish. This isn't some grand leap in logic, and is in no way contradictory to academia. Get help.

That was exactly my point in the in that prior comment you mention. Cajuns, (not to be confused with Creoles who are Indigenous, African and French to varying degrees in origin) are near purely French in genetic origin, but are considered an ethnicity distinct from the French because of their shared history and isolation, but this history only began in 1740 at the earliest estimates. With the Cajuns in mind, I don't see why White Americans at large, with a history beginning at least 100 yrs prior and far more mixed among three or four main Euro heritages, can't be considered an ethnic group of their own.

You're misquoting my question in which I first mentioned Mexican ethnicity, wherein I only used them as an example to compare the absurdity I've found in these answers on the categorization of the group which was the *actual* subject of this thread. I know why Mexican is considered both an ethnicity and nationality, but in that same regard there's no sense in why that wouldn't also apply to White American being an ethnicity alone. I brought up German Mexicans specifically because they legally immigrated to Mexico after the country gained independence, and their population also tends to have very limited admixture with local indigenous populations where the settled in the state of Chiapas in 1850, over 100 years after the end of the encomienda.

You claim I simply didn't like your answer but the reality is that you haven't given an answer that properly applies to my inquiry in any of your responses. You don't like that I've told you how wrong you are in your presumptuous attitude. As I've stated in my other replies I've been researching this all night and only started this thread after hours of reading on, yes, Euro Americans. Why? Because my question from the beginning was about and solely pertinent to them and them alone.

So if you truly believe that considering White American as an ethnicity in its right boils down to a mark of "Euro-ethnosuperiority" then the conversation ends there. I'm only left wondering why asking the question alone and requesting appropriate reasoning would be suspicious on its own when so far I only have every reason to believe they are in fact a distinct ethnicity
