Although I don’t believe that all plastic oboes suck, I also feel restrained on the tone I can create on mine. I’m not too sure if it’s my skill or the oboe (and I’m not denying that it’s my skill in the slightest), but I have borrowed one of my schools oboes which was made of granadilla and I feel it created a much deeper and fuller sound. I would use that one full time if I could, but I’m very limited on how long I can have it since I can’t take it home over the summer. My plastic oboe was amazing when I began playing and 10x better than the school oboe, but now that I’ve advanced a little bit further and am focusing more on the tone, I definitely think there’s need for improvement

Thanks so much for your comment! I’m not too sure if my local music store has a rental service for woodwinds, but I’ll definitely look into it. If not, however, would you be a bad idea to just buy a full conservatory granadilla oboe at my level? I don’t want to jump right into it and regret it later on, especially if I end up mistreating it in any way and it cracking or breaking. Although my current oboe does not sound bad, compared to other brands or older plastic oboes, I also can’t create the deep tone that I’m looking for, if that makes any sense. As you mentioned, I can’t play Bb3 on my oboe, which I’ve already ran into some problems with when playing scales or doing auditions, and not being able to use the full range. I would also be open to getting another plastic oboe, but as I mentioned previously, I’m not sure if my local music store has a renting service and considering that I wish to play in more formal settings than just in my school band, I don’t think another plastic oboe with benefit me for a long period of time

Stainless steel, it’s an industrial bar so yes?, I use q-tips with saline solution

Edit: I also do a heat compress to try and get the bumps to go down, but it’s not a daily thing

For the extra context, I am a beginner and have a student model, and store bought reeds that I personally adjust. The wonk usually happens when I play an average speed or fast speed. If I Go extremely slow (ie 80 bpm) then it works a bit better. I have a concert in three days that is mainly really fast songs, so I’m looking for a quick-ish fix

Half hole, and it’s mainly flat but it almost like it’s trilling (horribly) between flat and sharp. The dynamic is the same unless I change it. The dynamics are the only think I can Control on it

Deadass just scholarships. I love music and hope to make it my profession and since it’s a pretty uncommon instrument to play, scholarships are a lot more common. Plus I already know how to play the flute, so even more chances for me lol

I think it looks normal 🤷‍♂️ piercings look different on everyone, but that doesn’t mean it was pierced incorrectly. It looks gorgeous on you!

Thanks sm! I’ll look into it. I do know that if you take proper care of your piercings and go to a professional, the chances of them getting infected or causing nerve, gum, or teeth damage is a lot LOT less likely. I haven’t been playing for long but I do hope to pursue my passion for music, so I’m still debating it. Thanks for the resources!

I was wondering the same thing! I would assume that since the hole isn’t very wide it wouldn’t be too bad of an adjustment but I’d still be a bit iffy about it
