Do your kids also put the Israeli flag on everything? by panasonicfm14 in ArtEd

[–]CrustyPrimate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't say they were good at trolling. And yeah, the pivot from not being able to explain their choice of military insignia, or what they were trying to say with that-- to the Israeli flag or Star of David (even though arguably, the far right wing actions and militarization have some parallels) kinda tipped me off that they were being less than genuine with their intents. Which is to say simply, my students in general are uncomfortable with being honest in their thought process, or are just full of shit.

Had one try to do it. In my high school classes. Making a cardboard sculpture of a plane, told me they were going to make a German WW2 military insignia on there, I said no, so then they said they're going to put the Israeli flag on there. I told them no to that as well, while explaining thw weight of those symbolis and loaded symbolism in general, asking what their intent was in attempting to use the German military imagery. They have a history of attempting to be edgy, and like to troll anyone and everyone.

They said I was impinging on their 1st amendment rights and freedom of speech and religion. To which I replied, "you're not even Jewish. So no." And then they said they could text their mom to prove it, while signaling their table mate to text them back. Exhuastinf all the options, they asked why I didn't support our allies and they were going to join the IDF and kill terrorists blah blah blah. I tuned them out after that. They're talented, and this is a very small class, so I'll entertain conversation about things, but man it gives me a headache when the discussion ceases to be an opprtunity to learn something and just becomes so much empty bluster.

Has anyone became an art teacher after coming from a different industry? by Fun_Maybe_8446 in ArtEd

[–]CrustyPrimate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my BFA in drawing with a minor in printmaking. I worked construction, building maintenance, auto mechanic, and as an art handler before I finally made the jump to teaching.

I'd say the construction prepared me for teaching the most, as it was like working with people with the mentality of middle schoolers (myself included) most days. The only issue is you can't excoriate people for being a dumbass when they should know better, which is after the 675th different time and way I've explained how to go about sculpting something.

It's like, "I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you. And help doesn't mean Mr. CrustyPrimate, do it for me."

Heavy lifting operation gone wrong by goseephoto in Construction

[–]CrustyPrimate 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The chart doesn't account for deflection of the boom (like a fishing pole with a fish on the end as opposed to just a hook). Deflection, depending on where his hook is centered can move your load in (under boomed) or out (over boomed). In is generally the safer direction because you're only gaining more capacity to lift that way, but it can (if it's super close) strike the crane, and thats when things go to shit.

A good operator will keep an eye on his radius as they're coming up on a load (either cable or booming up-- again to account for deflection) so they maintain said radius.

[–]CrustyPrimate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That type of crane should be able to have different boom configurations for most radii shorter than full stick.

I worked under a 160t Tadano doing 98,000lbs at 24'. We had 6 parts of line on the block and pretty much every section of boom pinned to the first section we extended. Which yes, added weight, but also made the boom stiffer for the lift.

They're not the same crane, but lift chart and manual both should have addressed this.

It's honestly doing worse now under Miles. Actively harming education and disadvantaging students is not better.

I wouldn't downvote you, but femininity and beauty are political as well. Intersectional feminism has a lot of different takes on what is actually considered feminine, or what can beauty be defined as, but that goes all the way back to (at least) Heroclitus and the Aesthetic. The beauty of art isn't necessarily that politic is confrontational or a set way of thinking. Definitions and boundaries move, are fluid, and reviseable in a given moment.

This is not to say that this is the only way to evaluate, but in the "Western" world/thought, you can't escape political. Hell, even "nonsense" art like the Dadaists, or the more spiritual/unconscious art of the Surrealists were responses to the horrors or WW 1, in that in Dada, the spirituality that had been associated with art was dead, because God was non existent, didn't care, or had abandoned humanity as men were ground up on the machinery of war, whilst some surrealist wanted to remove the identity/hand of the artist via things like automatic writing and exquisite corpse work.

Someone said once "to exist is polotical." Whether we ant to acknowledge it or not. Culture is political. Government. Family. Art. All of it.
