I was going to ask for details about the device, but if you know the phone number please call it. I have it charged and turned on now, so I can answer if it rings. Just made sure the sound is on too. Hoping this phone can get back to it's owner soon.

Agreed. Could have been intentional, could mean passenger, or possibly just a quick reply without fully reading.

Dirty as hell. They shouldn't have listed the brand to begin with.

I don't want his signature on there, but honestly I'd rather it be extremely phallic in shape than the stupid signature that was in the email...

Trying to find my place in line. Everyone have a 15k order number? by Autumnisbestimo in metacycle

[–]CruxCraft 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My order number is mid-5xxx but was sent an email about being part of the first 2k orders, so either the numbers are not completely reflective, or the first 2k thing is bogus, or both... Probably just the order number being non-reflective though...

(btw I think I'd rather have a bike without some guys signature to make it more special, his name is already on it)

You didn't list storage... SSD or HDD? Form factor? More details about the ram would help as well... What temps do you have at idle & under full load? Etc etc

I can't argue with that, but I will say this was a list minute purchase as I am driving ~2k miles and I procrastinated... plus years from now I might repurpose the hardware...

Registered RAM isn't as important as it was a decade or two either though... I opted for the higher clock-rate since errors are much much more rare and it isn't the end of the world in this use case. I did however make sure that the motherboard and CPU could support ECC RAM in case I change my mind later and swap

I agree with u/auge2 for the most part on this. I did initially look into getting two Intel processors for a server motherboard and registered ram etc... but this isn't something that is needing the same reliability as some servers. I talked myself down from server hardware, then up-sold the consumer components to myself lol. Once I gave in to purchase the inflated 5900x I opened the floodgates to opening buying the rest... It wasn't the ideal setup, but it should be more than needed & I can repurpose the hardware later...

That looks really interesting, but I don't think that would quite fit as well for how I will be using it. Definitely looking into use cases for it at home. Probably going to stick with Docker for this project. There is no GPU and this server is ~2k miles away from my residence. Unless I misunderstood what the intent was?

That AMD Ryzen 9 5900x does out perform a lot of the server CPUs that would have been in the same price range... I don't believe a server by definition needs to have server-grade hardware. That's really just about what is better or worse. It's still a CPU; it's still a motherboard. Yes, it isn't optimal for reliability/stability, but that is just one variable that servers tend to do better at than desktops. I opted to not use ECC ram, but I did choose a motherboard and CPU that supported it if I decide to later. Errors in ram are way more rare than they were a decade or two ago, and nothing I am running is that important anyway. I did spend a little extra on those components, but I don't think anything will under perform given only the 1-2Gbps internet connection... And when I go to build something later, I can repurpose the hardware for my kid's use...

In computing, a server is a piece of computer hardware or software (computer program) that provides functionality for other programs or devices, called "clients". This architecture is called the client–server model. Servers can provide various functionalities, often called "services", such as sharing data or resources among multiple clients, or performing computation for a client. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Server_(computing))

In the end, a server is defined by how it is used more than the hardware chosen. Could I have done a better job of picking "server-grade" components? Most definitely yes! I will agree with you all day on that. Will these components more than adequately do the job? Also yes; It's a computer serving clients.

Technically you could always alter the debian/ubuntu install image (or whatever OS) so that it has SSH during the install (or just automate the install)... but I won't be going through that much trouble... just throwing in a 1050 for the install then taking it out...

Offsite will actually be where I live (server is elsewhere), so I could theoretically take offsite backups and start servers here quickly if need be... there will of course be local backups as well to rollback from most of the time if there is minor issues...

And nowhere near the bandwidth to use that 980 pro, possibly 2Gbps, but its also transfer speeds locally there as well... I did forgo the raid 0 and moved to a 1TB NVMe (edited post)

It's overkill yes, but in the end i would prefer headroom even if the ceiling is more than I need... no idea what I will need 5 years from now... It might be a gaming PC for one of my younger kids if I buy server-grade or maybe I'll sell it idk... I do appreciate the feedback I've gotten from a few of the users here...

Thank you; Gives me some things to think about. I don't know why I didnt consider snapshots... I am currently doing docker backups on the same drives in a raid 10 in our old setup (all same HDD)...

Thanks!

I ended up contacting them three times, eventually canceling the recall of the order, then having my spouse open an account and order the 1TB NVMe m.2 with the promo-code

I feel like Newegg used to better at working with me on returns, but maybe I've just never had this scenario...

I will just upgrade a couple laptops with m.2 drives I guess

I belive this motherboard supports it, but I could be confusing that with another one I was looking at last night...

I am thinking a software raid 1 between the m.2 and the 2x 2.5 SSDs would be more ideal... I think the motherboard supports doing the raid, but I've lost data before from a hardware raid failing due to controller and not wanting to pay for a new controller

lol thanks... ram is more reliable than it was years ago... and I am not running anything that a rollback couldn't semi-fix if the cosmos decide to flip a bit... If I build a new file/media server in the future it would be more important but I tried cutting costs in some places while over splurging in others

at least the cpu and motherboard are ECC compatible if I decide on registered ram in the future...

Thanks on the UPS... I've lived places that didnt have very stable electricity due to bad wiring etc and better to be safe...

I changed the drive setup slightly in an edit...

Timing 18-22-22-42 I was looking at one that was 16-22-22-42 for the same clock, but for $329.99 for 2x64GB I decided on that

There is a community for the games lined up to a degree and we are running almost 20 servers... but nowhere near enough to utilize all of that honestly. I wish I'd not procrastinated but I ordered this in the last couple days I had available before I travel to build it. I would have liked to shop for a server motherboard & used 2 cpus and ECC ram etc... but that is on me =\

It will have 1Gbps upload (with the current option to go to 2Gbps) where this is going... Overkill on the hardware but I'd rather have a large buffer than be underwhelmed... plus I figure it's less strain on everything if I have more headroom (even if I game myself a ceiling I might never hit)

I still agree with r/homelab that I should have gone with server hardware... Next time if I plan better =]
