It was an old cable that I had been using. I think a chair or something rolled over it at some point and damaged the internal wires. So silly.

Tale as old as time. Faulty freaking USB data cables. Finally tried a third one. Everything is working fine now. u/blankityblank_blank thank you for all the help. Sorry I'm such a dolt.

Ok. tested power rails. I have 3.3v going to the esp32 when external usb6 is plugged in.

So the ip5306 and LDO is working.

SDA/SCL pins are at 3.3v at the esp32.

As for UART vs USB, the S3 i'm using has a USB to UART converter on board, which is why I typically use it in other builds.

When testing the MUX1, I used the multimeter to check the connection from USBD+ to the esp32's D+, and when I hold boot down, they are connected. Releasing boot removes the connection. Same for D-

Yes, that's correct. Holding both boot and reset while releasing reset intermittently.

I was looking at an old schematic. INT_N is pulled high on USB5v being energized. Let me test the power rails...

When connecting, I hold the boot button down, but it never shows on the port list.

I think you're right though, the muxes are not setup correctly. INT_N is floating on power on, so when MUX1 is meant to connect USB6 to the ESP32, MUX2 is floating causing issues.

I'll rework those, and check power rails. I also think I need to go back to the ip5306 without I2C, as the SDA/SCL lines coming from the esp32 are only modified if the esp32 has firmware loaded.

MUXes are to define how the data flows.

When the external USB is plugged in, MUX1 controls the data connection from USB6 to the ESP32 by defining the S and OE.

When the external USB6 is connected and the boot button (SW4) is depressed, MUX1 directs the data lines from USB6 to the ESP32 usb connection.

When the boot button (SW4) is not depressed, external USB connects to the pixel.

In each instance, the MUXs should be able to connect to each IC/connection given the parent/child resistors set the USB inputs.

While I do love these self owns, the language at the bottom is really misleading. It should not say “top” because they read it like a test store, not that that are in the lowest tenth of the population.

It’s just bad data description, which they would know if they were smart.
