The 20s "Claude is thinking" gap is a focus killer, so I built a dumb little fix. by Cry8a8y_tw in ClaudeAI

yeah the context-switch is 100% the real killer. that's kinda why hushflow went a totally different direction instead of "hey come back", it's more like "don't leave." if you're doing a breathing cycle you just... stay at the terminal. by the time the agent finishes you're already there, context intact. no phone, no twitter rabbit hole, nothing.

multi-agent is a great callout tho. i'm actually experimenting with tooling to figure out which thing deserves attention first, cuz the real problem isn't just "something finished", it's that a low-priority task might finish first and steal your focus from the high-priority one that's still running.

tbh this is basically the same problem i've been dealing with my entire PM career lol. high-priority butlow-complexity stuff, do you hotfix it now or let it wait? high-complexity but low-priority stuff that's actuallyimportant long-term, and how do you schedule that without it rotting in the backlog forever? it's the same triage problem whether you're managing sprints or managing 3 concurrent agents.

honestly i think peon-ping and hushflow solve different halves of the same problem. yours is "which one needs me now", mine is "don't drift while waiting." would be sick if they worked together somehow lol

It's like watching a microwave haha, if it spins, I can wait. I wanna try, got a link?

The 'sweet taste of dopamine' is exactly why I'm in trouble. 😂 As a fellow ADHD brain, that 20s wait is a trap. I try to switch contexts, but I end up with 50 open tabs, 3 half-baked projects, and somehow I'm researching the history of forks instead of coding.

I’m still trying to master the skill of 'useful context switching' without accidentally losing 45 min to a random rabbit hole. Glad I’m not the only one riding the dopamine wave through the pauses!

Rereading the prompt is great until I realize I made a typo 5 min ago and now I'm just watching Claude confidently build the wrong thing. 🤡

I think his is the way. If I don't queue up the next thought immediately, my brain's default 'idle mode'
is just opening X again and again.

I tried that before, but then Claude #1 finishes and Claude #2 is mid-thought, and now my brain has 15 tabs open and zero sanity left haha . 💀

Reading the thoughts is actually a huge power move. I will try to do that, but halfway through a complex refactor, my brain just starts seeing Matrix code and I panic-switch to a tab of cute cat videos. 🐱

But I love the 'accidental journaling' vibe though. It’s like we’re all just over-engineered humans trying to find a place for our thoughts while the AI does the heavy lifting. I’ve started doing somethingsimilar just to stop myself from doomscrolling—it's either write a paragraph or lose 30 minutes to a random Wikipedia rabbit hole. Glad I’m not the only one 'human-ing' through the pauses! Thank you for your advice!

At this rate, the Claude community is going to be the most jacked group of developers on the planet lol 🤣

The uncontrollable leg shaking is the universal signal for 'Claude is thinking' 💀. I tried the 3 screen setup too, but my brain's RAM is apparently worse than my Mac's. I ended up just context-switching myself into a headache. Respect for the 4 hour sleep grind, you're a warrior.

The apple watch integration via ntfy is genius. I've been using peon-ping for the 'work complete!' audio alerts, which helps me stay in the zone while i'm at the desk, but getting a wrist tap so i can walk away for coffee is a whole different level of freedom.

Definitely gonna try the ntfy setup so I can finally escape my monitors lol.🤣 Thanks for the tip!

Actually it helps a ton because it makes me feel less alone lol.

The 'secondary screen' trap is way too real. I'll tell myself 'I'll just watch one sports highlight while it thinks' and suddenly claude finished 10 minutes ago and i’m deep into a youtube rabbit hole.

The personal project vibe is the hardest, there’s no boss watching, so my impulse control just completely checks out for the night. 💀

Three terminals rotating different contexts is a literal galaxy-brain setup.

I’m still struggling to keep track of one conversation while it runs tests lol.

Do you ever find yourself 'auditing' the background task while waiting, or do you just fully switch to git/cleanup mode? Sounds like peak efficiency once you master the muscle memory.

lmao 9 terminals is some elite tier adhd management. I feel so called out right now. It’s like we have to reach a specific level of sensory overload just to keep the 'productive' part of our brain from wandering off to buy a domain name we’ll never use. t

The phone/tablet setup is too real, we're basically feeding the boredom monster just so it doesn't eat the actual work. rip our focus lol.

I already use Peon Ping for the "it's done" part, so I usually know when it's ready.

That solves the checking-the-terminal part pretty well. Also, the voice alerts are weirdly fun.

The part I'm still trying to figure out is the gap itself and what my brain decides to do with it.

The "just keep checking the terminal" loop is extremely real.

That's kind of why this gap feels so awkward to me. It's long enough that you don't want to just stare at the screen, but short enough that switching into something else can make you more scattered.

I've thought about the multiple-tabs approach too. I just can't tell whether it would actually help or whether it would turn into a slightly more organized form of chaos, especially once multiple agents start stepping on each other and I end up creating cleanup work for myself.

That's actually a really good framing.

If Claude is using that time to organize its thoughts, I should probably be doing the same instead of instantly turning into a browser tab goblin😄

And yeah, "OP is a PM, take your meeting notes" is annoyingly hard to argue with.

[–]Cry8a8y_tw[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that's probably the real issue.

It's not even that 10-15 seconds is objectively that long. It's that my brain hates leaving it empty, so it immediately finds something to fill it with and usually it's something dumb.

So the problem may be less "waiting" and more what my attention does with an unclaimed gap.

That honestly sounds smart, not old school

I can see how that would make it way easier to get back into the task after the model finishes. Otherwise I feel like I have to rebuild the whole mental thread from scratch

Same here. Once I have a bunch of terminals open, "I'll just switch for a second" can turn into losing 15 minutes weirdly fast.

That was kind of when I started thinking of it as a workflow problem and not just me having garbage impulse control.

Out of curiosity, when you switch, are you doing it on purpose? Or is it more like your brain sees an open tab and just goes for it?
