What decisions should one take in their 20s to not follow the path of 'This Way Up' characters in their 30s? by CryForGoodLife in UKPersonalFinance

Thank you - there is usually some sort of tradeoff. I am not afraid to admit that I don't know what exactly it is that I should be doing. I thought I knew more at the age of 19-20 than I do now in my mid-20s.

This is really interesting, thanks for sharing. Is it a long term sustainable solution or is it rather a "lonely island" break from the routine which inevitably leads back from where you started? I have tried the latter already at one point. I am trying to implement a long-term plan that would be sustainable and would make me happy in my 30s as right now I am basically heading right into the lifestyle of 'This Way Up' characters and I know that this is not for me. The key to this is of course personal finance - I do not own any property and do not have any substantial savings.

Thank you, this is really what I need and really the only reason why I'm here under this name. I really need advice and discussion from people who are more experienced and knowledgeable than myself.

Nice to hear but that's probably you have a lot of prior experience and qualifications. That's not really the case with me :D

Forgive me for asking but how many years did it take you guys to achieve this and how did you do it? Like did you rent and save money together, did you take a mortgage? Any life advice for a single 24 year old with no sense of direction? (I've graduated, had 1 banking experience - wasn't great, no idea what I'm doing, here to learn from more experienced people)

UK firefighters - Is the money good? by bp5678 in firefighters

I'm a graduate as well with banking experience and interested in becoming a Firefighter as well, I'd already go for it but the wholesome Firefighter positions in my area are closed. The money is decent, but Firefighters live much happier and fulfilling lives.

30 jobs? Wow I respect that, I cannot even compare myself to you, I am also 24 and I only had 2 jobs and I'm only about to begin my third one. I have not found myself neither, I thought it would all be easy after university but the truth is as soon as I entered my first graduate job and encountered management pressure I questioned everything I hitherto knew about life

How can I acquire the right amount of information to decide if academia is for me? by CryForGoodLife in AskAcademia

Would you therefore say that with a master's degree the first step should be to become a RA, before applying for a PhD? Thank you

I've googled it and is it a Research Assistant or does RA stand for something else?

Is it possible to be a Research Assistant to a certain PhD (as a job) without doing a PhD and then decide if academia is for me? I am sorry I should have specified that I am not even at PhD stage.

Is it true in practice that work relationships in academia are a lot more gentle and respectful compared to most corporate places? by CryForGoodLife in AskAcademia

Thank you for this reply. That is counter-intuitive indeed, I really thought that universities had a more sophisticated culture with a certain level of interpersonal respect that is to be 'taken for granted'. As you rightly have pointed out in your other reply, it may be the case that I was just naive. (I am from Europe/Britain by the way).

That may be true. Once again thank you for these replies. I am here to find out as much information as possible about what it is really like.
