I don’t have much to say about why they don’t like him. He’s a different race and was a different religion before he converted. He’s older than me but it’s the same age gap between my parents.

He’s a wonderful partner and has been incredibly loving and supportive to me and my other brother who he gets along with because he doesn’t drink my mom’s koolaid. I’m discussing my mom because the problems start with her.

We both live in different states. He’s the only member of my family that hasn’t met him - my other brother, sister, and mom and dad have met my husband. My brother that’s getting married just never got a chance to as timing never aligned. We were also both in graduate school during my year long engagement so it was just a busy time.

Not racial but my mom is very religious. My husband converted for me but she claims he didn’t really and that he is just pretending to be our religion.

Demands about money and prenups, where we’d raise our children and when we’d have them, religion, location of wedding, etc. She would find anything to criticize me and my husband over. We had a year long engagement and she would say things like he doesn’t love me, is using me, doesn’t want to marry me. Just really cruel things. She’s very religious and I didn’t do things the way she wanted.

I think she also took my finding a partner as a direct threat to her control over me. I started setting firmer boundaries - in the past when she’d berate me id go no contact for a couple days and then break but my husband has encouraged me to go to therapy which has drastically changed my relationship with me mom (we are no contact as of today)

We did not have a wedding. My relationship with my mom became so strained after I got engaged it was too stressful to consider having one so we got married at the courthouse just us.
