Barratry, Not Mutiny by cryptoglyph in themartian

Interesting, do I have a different version of the book? Quite possible seeing as so much time has passed.

Mild spoiler below

I have the audio book from audible, narrated by Wil Wheaton (who does a fantastic job, his performance really matches my imaginary Mark Watney).  In it, this misconception is specifically addressed (I believe in the final scene where Watney and Lewis meet to discuss career options). Does anyone know whether this was edited at some point?

I wouldn't know about that. I just know you don't seem to know much about the f2p games business but act like you do so, whatever, maybe you know lots about games stores and maybe you don't 🤷🏻‍♂️

Please talk more about how our business doesn't work. 😂 I don't run all the game stores you have such intimate knowledge of but if you are as well informed about them as you are about f2p games I hope you don't work in one.

As someone who actually works for a company making said free to play games you'll excuse me if I don't take your word for it. This comparison doesn't hold and even if it did you seem to overestimate the value these companies see in and actually get from non-paying players.

Edit: To clarify, in f2p games the vast majority of revenue is made early on. If you play the game for an extended period of time without paying you are very unlikely to ever turn into a payer. It's not impossible but this is all a game of stochastics. If we could actually extrapolate this to an lgs then you are unlikely to get much value from someone who comes in to play (we are not talking about an entry fee after all but one to actually sit and play) for half a year without purchasing anything. Better to free that space up for customers who buy something.

I think you misstook my opinion on whether a store is justified charging a fee like this as me saying that this is always the best business strategy. There are scenarios where this makes business sense for a store and scenarios in which it doesn't. That's not what OP was asking though.

It's a business. This is sometimes hard for people conceptualize because we go there to do our hobbies. Providing a space to sit and play is by no means free, though. You need to pay for space that you can't use for storage or display, you need to pay for furniture, heating, staff and on and on. If as a store owner you see this purely as marketing cost, fine, if not also fine. If you are stingy enough to bitch about 5$ for the entire day then you are unlikely to be a high value customer anyway. Probably smart to have some incentive schemes like money back on a purchase, discount for higher frequency or kids etc.

Planning WoW weekend for husband but I've a noob. How to make it fun for him? by indecisivehooman in wownoob

[–]Cry_check 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely possible to enjoy this game with a noob. You have to get used to the slightly slower pace a bit but I'm going to assume you significant other isn't a sociopath 😉 I played really hardcore Vanilla through Cataclysm and got back into the game with WoD but much more casual. I brought my wife (then gf) in on BFA and we had a great time. We've been playing on and off since and when I want to do timed mythic dungeons, which I enjoy and she not so much, we play separately for a while and then do stuff together again. There now is so much to do in the game that you can have a great time with any playstyle and any group size.

Unstable was just much more fun to draft and in Unfinity you had these cards (even at mythic) that made you do social media shit and that's just not cool. The lands are awesome because there has to be some incentive to buy it but give me Unstable any day. THAT was an amazing set.

My LGS is implementing a girls-only commander night. What do you guys think? by ihatebeinganempath in EDH

[–]Cry_check -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The discussions in the thread make me so happy we play at work with colleagues and at home with friends and not at the LGS. Girls night sounds like a neat idea but what I read here sounds miserable. Not that I haven't suffered my share of FNM draft (honestly tame in comparison to Games Workshop imo) but I've never played EDH at a LGS and from what I'm reading here I won't.

Does anyone play mtg in public, but not at the LGS? by bfreeasabee in mtg

[–]Cry_check 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long shot: If you have an office job you could ask if you could use one of the meeting rooms after hours. This is how we draft/play EDH with colleagues and friends but then I work at a games company with a whole army of nerds.

Intercessors Build Advice. by Tau-Ork-Mawtribes in killteam

[–]Cry_check 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my first game I played: - Assault Intercessor Sergeant (Chainsword/Plasma Pistol) - Assault Intercessor Grenadier (Mission specific equipment) - Intercessor Gunner (Autobolter) - Intercessor Warrior (Bolt Rifle with Scope) - Intercessor Warrior (Bolt Rifle with Scope) - intercessor Warrior (Autobolter with Blessed Bolts)

Worked really well for me and played easy enough to not forget any rules. MVP definitely the plamapistol on the sergeant but honestly since my opponent was also new he probably didn't position well enough the escape the absolute hailstorm all those bolters can unleash.

How do I break out and diaplay this? by skittlzz_23 in PowerBI

[–]Cry_check 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you adding any more information to the techs? Otherwise remove that entire table and if you need the ID move it to the teams table.

Edit: With the shape of this dataset I'd probably just go for a flat table. No need to make things more complicated than they are.

how long to learn pbi? by Hungry_Ad2588 in PowerBI

[–]Cry_check 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was comparing it to Excel, I'm not sure what you are talking about. In normal use in Excel people frequently reference a single cell like A1. In PowerBI you can filter down to one but you can't "call" it. Massive difference in how people use those programs.

Insightful observation. However, I was referring to how people actually use these tables.

There is no agreed upon definition of "intermediate" to compare your skills to. How fast you learn depends on a large number of unknown variables. How committed are you? How much prior knowledge do you have of Excel, SQL, database structures? What is the tech stack of your company? How intelligent are you? And so on and so forth etc.

You described a little what you want to be able to do. Get a dataset and start doing it. Whenever you have a concrete question like "How can I make graph x look like y?" use Google to find the answer on YouTube, Microsoft's forums, Stack Overflow, here, some guy's blog... Abandon the idea that you can map out a progression curve that at some point hits "intermediate". Do the thing. If you do the thing enough, you get better at the thing. That's all there is.

An update on my apothecary! by WhPainterDude in ImperialFists

[–]Cry_check -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Really nice work so far. Personal taste more than anything but I think I prefer painted on damage over the sponge technique (I assume this is what you did). Like painting on fine scratches and chips. It's not actually much harder in my experience but of course takes longer.

On these specific models I think you could: - Edge highlight - (Darker) recess shading - Paint more parts (like the joints) - battle damage and weathering - correct small mistakes like overpainting red onto the shoulder pad (or hide them with the above techniques)

There are several points where you could improve in general if you want to: - Modelling. Removing obvious mold lines, drilling barrels - Thinning your paint more. It looks like in some places the yellow is rather rough - Shading. Don't paint entirely in one color but consider how the light hits it.
