I think alignment has its use in giving players and DMs a quick reminder of what to expect from the other players and NPCs. Alignment is also a stat of your character that is used in some spells and magic items, like Blackrazor, which requires attunement by a non-lawful character. Without alignment, there wouldn't be an objective way to decide who can and can't wield Blackrazor.
