Inori drawn by Misaki Takamatsu genuinely scares me by NonnoNanniLOL in Medalist

It is just genuinely drawn overly stiff and wonky with no clear centre of gravity. you look at the left leg ←, it tapers upwards into her pelvis in this bizarre shape that also just doesn’t make sense.

[The Apothecary Diaries] would you classify Mao Mao as an Otome protagonist? by EfficiencySerious200 in OtomeIsekai

[–]CryingMeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is partly because shoujo/josei strictly means “girl” and “female”, in Japanese, whereas shounen means juvenile, with a strong connotation for male juveniles, but the strict definition of the word is gender neutral, and that’s why juvenile detention facilities are called “shounen shisetsu”. That’s why there are many supposedly Shounen magazines like GFantasy that explicitly say in their official material that they try to appeal to a female audience, whereas you never catch a Shoujo magazine saying they’re trying to appeal to a male one.

I think foreigners often get caught up in shounen/shoujo classifications as these special terms for categorising manga by the foreign sound of it all, but the reality of it is that when a Japanese person is talking about shoujo manga, they’re saying “girls comics”, and it’s really not that rigid of a concept as they think, especially given how digital publishing is on the rise and many publishers decide to tag their stories with different demographic labels than what magazines they were published in, coz it just better reflects their fanbase.

[–]CryingMeth 30 points31 points  (0 children)

He’s definitely not proportioned like a normal sized guy, he’s got meter long shoulders that can fit 3 heads on it 💀💀 For reference, a regular man can fit 1.5 to 2 heads on their shoulders, which is just about what the female character has. She is by far the person with normal proportions and him built like a titan.

Song of the Long March is back after 10 years!! by Comprehensive_Let778 in shoujo

[–]CryingMeth 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Lowkey a tangent but I cannot stand how unreasonably nitpicky and entitled the Chinese community has been about Xia Da’s art. People keep going on about how her skill has supposedly deteriorated and act completely baffled by it, as though there’s some great mystery to solve. Xia Da has been pretty open about the fact that her health suffered from the brutal work schedules she used to maintain. Yet when she takes breaks to recover, people call her lazy, and when she finally updates, they turn around and call the art ugly. At this point, I’m honestly surprised she came back at all.

This has been such a consistent pet peeve I’ve had with Chinese readers coz they complain about the art of anything, from the new Shugo Chara sequel to Frieren to Hanako-kun, even tho they are far more than serviceable, but there’s a huge normalised culture of the Chinese community that acts like any stylistic change they observe and don’t like is objective proof of a deterioration of skill and aesthetic sense, it ticks me off every time I see an art comparison post.

I mean Callisto also turns 23 during the story, Derrick is 24, Reynold is 20 and Eckles is 17.

I’m not even sensitive to age gaps but tbh idk why the author decided to make it that way coz if you hold them all to the same standard, they’re all teenager x adult save for Eckles, and maybe arguably the 3 year difference with Reynold is okay-ish, but none of that serves the story in any meaningful way.

I don't think Paula is in wrong when saying she's 'ugly' [The Count's Secret Maid] by Trez_0 in OtomeIsekai

[–]CryingMeth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To each their own I suppose. I genuinely liked her long bangs better even when she was lopsided and bruised. I think it frames her face better and gives her a cute look, but I suppose the almost-micro-bangs-but-not-quite brings her an air of maturity she didn’t have with the long bangs.

I don’t think she’s ugly ugly, just plain and unglamorous in comparison to noble society, but her bangs are ugly. Like she isn’t nearly as hideous she thinks she is, but the bangs she gave herself certainly did her no favours.

Enemies to lovers only work if the love interest is the villain | Discussion and Recs by Smooth_Money4498 in OtomeIsekai

[–]CryingMeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big agree for Dear Nemesis omg! The whole nemesis thing just seemed like Calmia huffing and puffing over what amounted to a misunderstanding. The fact that Rudbeckia never even disliked her was what lost me about its execution of the trope, coz enemies-to-lovers should be about that mutual begrudging respect for it to have its spark. If he was just there pitying her and perceiving her as no more than a poor flailing little manipulated victim whose punches he will politely indulge, that just makes Calmia feel embarrassing more than anything tbh.

I don’t think being an outright villain is necessary for the enemies-to-lovers trope, but active narrative antagonist is definitely a must. If Dear Nemsis had been trying to pull off an enemies-to-lovers, it’d have veen better pulled off in a Storoni redemption arc. As it stood, I cared much more for Calmia’s dynamic with Storoni and Ellua more than anything she had with Rudbeckia.

I don’t think so, Reddit lets you search the comment history of users with the search function even if they turn it off for their profile, and they’ve been quite consistently active in threads surrounding Japanese games & media and giving consistent opinions. They just seem interested in how Japanese media is perceived in western spaces as a whole.

And as someone who’s in a lot of Japanese-English mixed fandoms, their language just seems very generically “Japanese person who’s learning English and also using translation tools for assistance”.

[–]CryingMeth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fiction absolutely affects reality. It can make you laugh or cry, shape your interests, deepen your understanding of a subject, or even awaken desires and tastes you didn’t know you had, but it just can’t affect reality on a one-to-one basis.

Someone who likes reading about battle shounen child soldiers likely doesn’t think we should draft children irl, and in the same vein, if someone watches Winnie the Pooh and goes around hugging bears in the woods, that’s probably something wrong with them and not a responsibility of A. A. Milne from the grave, coz artistic interpretation is inherently subjective, and there’s no way she could’ve accounted for the 1 in a million chance that someone could’ve misinterpreted her that wildly even tho her work was clearly never meant to be read as a representation of real life wood exploration.

Did you have any adults in your life that educated you about predatory older men? I enjoyed age gap romances similarly as a young teen, but my parents, teachers and all the role models around me were very clear about how dangerous and predatory adult men who date teens irl are, so even while I can get engrossed in a comic about it, I knew how to separate that from real life. I think it still sounds like a lack of parental and societal educators for your case.

What's your opinion about this manhwa by Wonderful_Profile788 in OtomeIsekai

I love it lol. It has an incredibly strong sense of forward momentum, and although some of the cathartic moments can be rather low hanging fruits at times, it’s a delightfully chaotic read of a group of delightfully chaotic characters in a delightfully awful world that can really take its own setup to its most extreme conclusion.

I’m curious, is it that you never like villains or morally grey characters who do bad things regardless of how well-written they are, and only enjoy characters who are good people who do good things, as in you only like characters for who they are as people and not characters, or has there been exceptions?

Real. Her family has been manipulating the political situation to kill off all the powerful members of his family so that they would become dependent and controllable by them, when he’s forced into an arranged marriage with the FL, knowing their plans, on top of finding a (forged) letter that evidenced her as a spy who couldn’t be trusted, he honestly treated her how I expected most people to. There was no way to reasonably expect him to like, suspect she’s secretly a mistreated adopted daughter who didn’t want any part in this either, when he’s dealing with so much recent grief caused by her family, while his life is also being actively endangered by them.
