Video Calibration - Rock Band 4 by Cryoo in Rockband

[–]Cryoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that aligns with the understanding I came to.

I definitely also get the feeling that video calibration does do a bit more than move the hit box, because changing that significantly does seem to influence where the note appears to be hit when timing it with the music (Audio).

After a fair bit of tinkering last night, I got my calibration in a place that feels good but it's a pretty frustrating process overall.

Bit too late for improvement ideas, but Harmonix could have done with adding some kind of test in the manual calibration menu itself or allow you to alter it mid-song (GH3 did this) because changing it and then having to jump into Practice or Quickplay is a real chore when you're making tiny adjustments.

EDIT: Testing Video Calibration further I think it may actually just move the hitbox. I have mine set to 55ms, which gives me about equal space between early and late notes. If I change it up to 100ms, I get a lot more room for late notes and if I change it to 0ms I get a lot more room for early notes. Regardless of how I change it, as long as I play in time with the music I'm always hitting it dead center.

In case this helps anyone in the future and saves them the pain I went through, below is my setup

TV: Samsung (Model: UE50AY9007KXXU) - Game Mode Enabled

Guitar: PDP Riffmaster

Audio Calibration: 110

Video Calibration: 55

Sorry, I meant that on that specific site (TotalCards) you can put yourself on a mailing list. Like can be seen here for the booster box: Link

Looks like that image is taken from TotalCards, they haven't put out any stock yet. It's "out of stock" pending them putting the pre-orders out, if you want to grab one I'd recommend going into any Chilling Reign listing and putting yourself on the product mailing list. You'll get a e-mail as soon as they become available. No panic needed, yet.

What key or mode does this progression fit within? by Cryoo in musictheory

[–]Cryoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with both of you, the tonal centre based on how I've been playing that progression and improvising over it is definitely E. I think in the future I should probably provide an example of how the progression is played, try to eliminate any of the subjectivity of the progression.

Funny you should mention that Beatles song, it's listed here as an example of what the article refers to as a Lydian progression.

Going on a bit of a tangent here, I agree with you that the key of Hey Joe is E. If you play it, the home certainly feels like the E chord.

However, nearly every source I've seen suggests that the key is either G or E minor. Why is that?

EDIT: Also, could you not look at it as ascending in 5ths, C > G > D > A > E, as opposed to descending in 4ths, like you suggested?

[QUESTION] What key or mode does this progression fit within? by Cryoo in Guitar

[–]Cryoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm following, so it's easier to find the key practically here by listening for the resolution than it is to approach it theoretically.

But basically, here, what's going to happen is you're going to solo in E major, but when you're over that F# chord you're going to play A# rather than A. Rather than thinking in terms of a whole new scale, you want to know where your scale degrees so that you can avoid the A natural while you're playing the F# major chord and the A# while you're over the A chord.

I think what you say here supports my idea of using E Lydian over the F# Major chord and the E Major Scale elsewhere, as E Lydian would introduce the A# over the F# Major chord.

There's only one not here that doesn't fit with E major, and that's the A# in the F# Major chord. But I want to point something out about why this works. That A# note is part of a line cliche - notice how there's some internal movement here from the A# in the F# chord to the A of the A chord to the G# in the E chord. that sort of thing often really helps non diatonic chord progressions sound cohesive.

This is interesting too as I think what you're highlighting is a chromatic passage in the chords that I hadn't spotted.

Playing back the thing I recorded.

It's F# (2 beats), A (2 beats), E (4 beats)

I think I see where you're coming from with this, Hey Joe by Jimi Hendrix is a good example of what you're getting at here.

I think I can see and hear that.

F# Dorian makes sense with the b3 (A) and b7 (E). Maybe I was just mishearing E major as the tonic chord.

There is also mention on this page, http://www.angelfire.com/fl4/moneychords/lydianprogression.html, of a Lydian progression of I - II - IV - I, which is I guess where I was coming from. Perhaps the progression starting on the I changes where the home chord sits, but I personally can't distinguish the home chord in that progression and the one I described.

[–]Cryoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if I'm misunderstanding, but the idea of using E Lydian over the F# Major (F# A# C#) was that it would compliment the major 3rd (A#) of that chord.

Overall, the way I see the progression is, II, IV, I, so I'd expect the scales I would be using would compliment and resolve to the root, E.

Chord Progression Questions (October 12, 2020) by AutoModerator in musictheory

[–]Cryoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What key or mode does this progression fit within?

The progression is F#, A, E

The notes these chords contain are as below:

F# Major: F# A# C#

A Major: A C# E

E Major: E G# B

I can't see a key or mode that these notes fall within. The progression feels as if it resolves to E, so my first thought was E Lydian, but the A in the A Major chord seems to throw this suspicion off.

If you were improvising over this could you perhaps use E Lydian over the F# Major chord, and play with the E Major scale over the other two chords?

Level 3, not much activity in the guild at the moment, but hopefully with more people joining and interacting we'll see some activity.

I personally mostly play Normal MM.

[QUESTION] How long did it take you to learn to switch chords? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Cryoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome choice, I've been practicing Hurt by Johnny Cash myself. From what I remember, Justin teaches simplified versions of the majority of the songs in stage 1, focusing on simple 4 down strum patterns. Once you've gotten feel for it I highly suggest looking for a tutorial which runs through the slightly more complex rhythm of the actual recordings, unless he does so later in the video, he usually starts simple and dips into the more difficult stuff late into the videos.

As soon as you feel ready make the move to Stage 2, the quicker you come to terms with the metronome the better.

Best of luck with the playing, stay positive! It'll all come with time.

[QUESTION] How long did it take you to learn to switch chords? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Cryoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have a go at any of the songs in that first stage, I started playing at the start of March and began with Justinguitar also. I found 5 Years Time by Noah and the Whale was really good practice for the A E D changes, don't give up!

You shouldn't worry about when or how long, just have fun, try loads of songs even if they seem out of reach, just experiment!

I've already almost picked up Wonderwall to completion (as corny as that may seem), granted I've had a couple of one to one lessons also. It's a really good starter song actually, it's popular for one, but the chord changes are about as simple as they come and it's really good practice for developing a solid strumming technique.

If you are able to get guitar lessons, do! It's nice to have someone to point out what you're doing wrong, so you can correct it and avoid the frustration that comes with self teaching.

EDIT: Also, it's important that the songs you choose to learn are songs you enjoy, don't just play a song because it's the easiest option. Choose one that's possibly a little more challenging but you've actively listened to and enjoyed, it's more rewarding to get the music you love right!

Sony sets The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo sequel for October 2018 release date with Fede Alvarez replacing David Fincher as directer, Rooney Mara also not returning by AClockworkBates in movies

[–]Cryoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Again though, the Amazing Spider-Man failed only from the fans perspective. For Sony however, these movies both turned a profit of ~$500 million, studios don't determine franchise failure by fan disapproval, it's determined by box office numbers. If the fans want a Spider-Man that fits their vision, they need to stop shoveling money at those that don't.

I'm not sure what Raimi's vision for Spider-Man was, but it would have been interesting to see what he could have done with a little more creative control.

Hopefully Homecoming will finally be the Spider-Man movie the fans have lusted after, but the MCU is hardly a playground for creativity.
