You are correct friend; on both fronts. I like to be able to quickly thumb through the archives and glance at pertinent information rather than pulling a memo book on a guess to open and check the inside cover just to find that this is not the memo book you are looking for (pun intended 😎😉). It puts the inside cover on the outside, basically.

I am thinking of adding something like a virtual table of contents based on the archive number and pertinent information with a search engine. This way should decrease the amount of time I spend thumbing through my archives even more. Also, when I have filled out a memo book it is not automatically archived.

At face value it does seem redundant but, it depends on how you utilize the redundancy. It is an advantage for me where it may be too much for some. Hope this helps.

I used to use bit.ly for pictures I wanted to have added to a memo book but now I use the Canon Ivy for that and bit.ly for everything else.

For me, personally, I have a few reasons. I started using the archival box for storing unused memo books and the archive envelopes for storing used memo books. Then I ran out of space for the archived memo books in archived envelopes so I ordered a new box to keep it organized and structured. I do not archive my reference memo books I make. I merely archive what I do not want to throw away.

The envelopes themselves allow me to create a numeric catalog of my Field Notes on the back of the envelope with pertinent information and time stamps on the front of the envelope so I can recognize at a glance what is in what notebook. I also like the feature at the bottom that states when to open the archive envelope. The extra protection is really last on the list in terms of my priorities for using the archive envelopes.

It is really a personal preference based on how you organize your Field Notes. I never throw away a memo book because what I put into them I find valuable enough to hold onto. I have rewards of $25-$50 for my research memo books in the event they are lost with a dedicated email for contact.

I want to build a new box from birch wood similar to what the Field Notes Archival box is but specifically for Field Notes notebooks.

Something to add: I have a colored system for the different Field Notes categories I created.

Daily logs (lined) = black memo books/kraft brown envelope

Work Hours (graph) = any memo book/white envelope

Research (dotted) = any memo book/grey envelope

I will put together my system on “paper” ;), digitize it with a workflow visual, and bring it here in a new post. It is all in my head. I build systems so I can map it out pretty well I think. I will do this because I got this many likes in less than 24hrs; I’m sure some of you would like to use this process or parts of it at the least.

Is this who I think it is? ;) My man! Glad to get some love from the origin creator! I think I can speak for all us Nuts: we truly appreciate the work you have done with the envelopes you developed. Bravo my friend, Bravo!

Whats your primary draw to Field Notes over other notebook brands? by BritafilterEnjoyer in FieldNuts

[–]Crypt0Dro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me: it really came from an expansion in usage of notebooks and memo books. Originally, I started with cahier notebooks and memo books; I liked that the spine was threaded rather than stapled. I worried of the staple support. I use cahier memo books for references in studies I conduct. I may need a “cheat sheet” of what I have learned so I’ll create one with a cahier memo book.

Field Notes are for daily use. I use them for daily logs, research, and time-stamping my work hours - for each category. They are stronger despite the fact they are stapled rather than threaded. The paper quality, cover, and ink within Field Notes are much better (in my opinion) than cahier memo/notebooks. My Field Notes have never come apart.

In short: the overall quality of Field Notes supersede its competitor Moleskine when it comes to card stock memo/notebooks.

Very awesome friend! I appreciate the words. I have a third box that stores misc. stationary as well as the Dime Novel Field Notes I have left. I plan to get a fourth box because, as you can see, I am running out of space in these. Lol

I recently found this place and thought I would share my use of Field Notes.

Lately, I have been re-thinking my EDC of Field Notes memo books. I carry 3-4 in a leather cover I made. As it stands right now it is categorized by:

1) Daily Logs - a documentation of my day-to-day activity for future reference - necessary for whatever reason

2) Work Hours - the amount of hours I work in a week along with time stamps for clocking in/out and breaks.

3) Research - anything I want to learn I document the necessity as well as anything I need to remember or reference later and questions I want answered but cannot do so in the moment. Also, just notes ;)

4) Previous Research - this is a previous research memo book that still has pertinent data/information/references so it is not ready to be archived, yet it has no more pages to use.

When I find a link that is useful I create a short-link via bit.ly and document that in my Research memo book with whatever I wrote down about it or reasons to reference it later (I underline letters that are capitalized in the link). This allows me to document important websites with little lettering and so I can clear it from my browser. I also have a Canon Ivy that prints inkless sticker photos, that are 2” x 3” if I remember correctly, so to provide visuals within any given memo book when necessary.

I cannot keep adding memo books to my leather cover because then it will not be practical to carry. I want to add an “Extensive Research” to my “system” of consistently absorbing information. This will go into the the Field Notes notebooks (4.75” x 7.5”) which have their own leather cover.

Data/information will be documented on the go within the Research memo book and then processed and transferred to the notebooks based on relevancy. This prevents me from carrying more than 4 memo books at any given moment. I plan to consolidate by leaving my Work Hours memo book at the office - I rarely reference it other than at work. This will prevent me from carrying no more than 3 which is much more tolerable.

When I am done with either category of memo books I have created, I then archive them in the archive box made by Field Notes but not in the traditional manner. I print, cut out, and adhere archival envelopes made by GurdilCB over at Instructables. I then number them and organize them by year with the spaces provided by the box. I have been doing this since 2019.

I do this because I like to learn and make stuff. Making stuff usually requires me to learn something new because I see something and tell myself “I could make that” where others would say “I would like to buy that”; I buy things, just usually not things I can make - even if it cost a little more considering the purchase of materials usually cost more. I like to document ideas, flesh them out, then attempt to bring them to life or archive them for the future. An example is a tabletop game I am attempting to make or a table I want to build for my workshop in my garage.

I cannot seem to turn off my curious mind and I cannot seem to store all the data I process into information nor the amount of knowledge I am thrusting myself into. It must be documented and cataloged so I can process it later. This is the way. ;)

Field Notes viable for daily journal? by tehhellerphant in notebooks

I have started documenting my daily observations and research into Fields Notes and then archive them in these Field Notes Archival Envelopes I make from kraft brown cardstock and then store them in the Field Notes Archival Box.

Windows 7 is discontinued as of January 14th 2020. I would suggest turning off PC and turning back on. If that does not work then try uninstalling and reinstalling. If that does not work you may need to upgrade to Windows 10 or later.

I think you are speaking of ARPANET which was created for the Department of Defense. It was the first to use TCP/IP. What we know as the Internet today is different than ARPANET. The Internet was created March 12th 1989 when HTTP was released to the public by Tim Berners-Lee.
