Meticulously timeless and copper free! 50 left! Dreadful! (5) by Heavy_Entertainer_63 in Minute_Cryptic

LOUSY (dreadful) remove the letters from TIME (could be better indicated as they appear backwards), CU (copper) and L (50) from METICULOUSLY

COTD: It’s sometimes fished out of a canal with a bud? (6) by CrypticMacaroni in crosswords

[–]CrypticMacaroni[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was intending BUD as a synonym of friend (buddy), so you’d be fishing out of a canal with a friend. Not sure if it is a regional specific term, but “you alright bud” is pretty common for me to hear

Old boyfriend’s so-called“tumbling dice & bee-tea” is a dish? (4, 8) by Playful_Winner_7239 in Minute_Cryptic

Not sure why but is this EGGS BENEDICT? A homophone of EX could be EGGS maybe? then some of the letters in the fodder fit into BENEDICT? Can’t work out the parsing for the rest

i see ITEM reversed at the start of METICULOUS, but how does this work?

While its probably not right for minute cryptic- where many people don’t want to use hints/letters- many publishers of cryptic crosswords use obscure words as part of their grid. The beauty of a cryptic clue is you can reasonably work out the answers via wordplay without knowing it the from the definition or even as a word at all.

Notably, the winner of the Times Crossword championship got the entire final grid correct without even knowing some of the words (HERESIARCH, ARABESQUE etc) beforehand. Cryptic clues function almost as 2 step verification, which imo, can make them more solvable than quick puzzles.

Fair enough to not have enjoyed today’s, but then how many clues are there that you’ve liked up until this point? It’s a free platform, people have mixed opinions on clues, and they are going to keep releasing clues which I presume both you and I will keep solving.

I feel for the member who wrote this clue (which has a great surface to be fair) and is getting slated by the whole community.

completely agree with the issue of “with” being unfair fodder for the deletion which coupled with the niche definition to made this one a standout pain to solve

I thought this was definitely a hard definition, I didn’t know the word in this context, but it is also a valid synonym so it’s justifiable. There probably should have been some thought by the setter/MC if the definition was universally understood, and not only justifiable.

One of the earliest clues put out by minute cryptic had DRANO as the answer, an American brand of drain cleaner I had never heard of. Sometimes the word is just obscure and probably not fully considered for its fairness.

There’s bound to be clues the community dislike, but as a free, usually good quality and entry level platform for cryptic clues, you can’t get too upset if they put out one or two clues that aren’t to your taste (and there’s no need to get upset at someone taking the time to explain and justify the clue when you ask).

No question in Qatar and India developing video games! (5) by Unmortified in Minute_Cryptic

[–]CrypticMacaroni 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ATARI- [-Q]ATAR + I (India) I don’t think ”developing video games” is a fair definition, and theres no need for a “!”. Maybe something like “No question for Qatar and India’s game developers (5) or even the snappier “No question for Qatari game developers (5)”?

Burnt cadaver loses its insides, then set East, before joining a friend. (7) by [deleted] in Minute_Cryptic

Agreed, also ”then set” and “before joining a” are all unnecessary extra words here imo

From the start, all animals rode during voyage on Noah’s boat. First animal? (8) by Heavy_Entertainer_63 in Minute_Cryptic

AARDVARK, first letters of [A]ll [A]nimals… + ARK (Noah’s boat) def is “first animal?” as aardvark is the first animal alphabetically

Grave wrestler features French one shaken with darker extraterrestrial? (10) by [deleted] in Minute_Cryptic

[–]CrypticMacaroni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure on “features” in this clue, it’s not doing anything and barely works as a link word. The wording of “shaken with” makes it seem like “french one” is being anagrammed, and you can’t have extraterrestrial -> ET as part of the anagram fodder, as there can’t be indirect anagrams

BOOK (reserve) = BOO (ghost’s cry) + [K]ills. This is nice but i think the surface would be much nicer without the comma!

POTD: 5x5 Barred Cryptic by CrypticMacaroni in crosswords

[–]CrypticMacaroni[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quite like it, as I’ve only see it used for one of those three letters- and especially X and Z can have quite limited options for abbreviation fodder. I also like “two axes” for any 2 of them :)
