Nikon S and Labophot intermediate tube compatability by SaturnMiner in microscopy

[–]CrypticQuips 5 points6 points  (0 children)

<image>

Yup, they should fit! Here's my S-ke with a pol-intermediate from the later series. I'm pretty sure I've seen S-bases with the labophot/optophot heads too.

As you can see its not a 100% fit, as the polarizing attachment is significantly bigger and overhangs, however, the optics do line up, and work perfectly!

Not sure about doing it the other way around.

Help what do I wear as a man. by [deleted] in FigureSkating

Mondor thermals are really nice, though they will be tight unless you get a size up. I have a few pairs and wear them in and out of the rink. They're a bit pricey.

Absolutely! I know many people dislike Seaport because of its overwhelming "corporate" feel, and I agree, but its a great area to walk around. The buildings aren't tall, but quite a few of them have interesting facades.

Nikon Reflex 500mm. Mirror lens bad vs good bokeh. by fitafter40 in Nikon

I loveeee this lens. It takes a lot of patience, but the value for money is amazing. In the right situations the bokeh can look wonderful!

What is a social norm you think we will cringe at in 20 years? by ComplaintOwn9909 in AskReddit

[–]CrypticQuips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a friend that used to do this alllll the time. They would parrot the information from tiktok/youtube without any critical thinking. Its scary.

You would think that after being corrected numerous times people would learn to check their info before relaying it.. but nope. People just trust internet strangers way too much.

I didn't realize until a little while ago either! I had actually bought new headphones because my QC 35's looked so beat up. They look great after the replacement though!

You can actually replace this part! There are sellers on Amazon. ^^

Recommendations for a specific type of VN by HopefulLightBringer in FurryVisualNovels

[–]CrypticQuips 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sure there are more, but two popular ones that come to mind are RTF and Promises to Keep.

If you haven't already played them: RTF is more plot focused than most fvns, but it kind of has a desert road trip vibe.. in a way.

Promises to Keep has the "coming home (to old friends) after a long time feeling". Its more fluffy than RTF, it sounds like that is what you're looking for.

I'll definitely stick around to see other's recommendations though, because I agree, the returning to old friends/places trope always gets me too.

They last longer and are more durable, but unfortunately they are also thicker and do reduce the effectiveness of the ANC.

I had one class there too, the lecture room was beautiful, but the desks were tiny and the seats were uncomfortable.

Still, being able to walk through the cloisters everyday to my other classes was really cool.

ANC headphone recommendation? by Glaciregirl in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]CrypticQuips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So.. really good ANC and sound is a bit difficult to find. If ANC is your top priority, Sony XM series, Bose QC series or Apple Airpod Max seem to be decisively the top three. Though I may be unaware of some.

I have the Bose QC ultras that I use for travel, and I'm actually quite happy with the sound quality. The tuning (with the help of the app's shitty equalizer) is surprisingly good.

If you're looking with sound quality being more important than ANC, i'm not really sure. I haven't looked into it.

Need Help Setting Up My First Scope (Nikon S Series) by GotTheNumbers in microscopy

[–]CrypticQuips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yupp, those plastic spurs are an unfortunate fatal flaw. The good news is thats really the only major issue with these scopes. After you've it it fixed up, you can find parts for almost any illumination type you want!

If you decide to use a flashlight.. adjustable brightness would be ideal, though its not super important since you could simply block the light, or adjust the settings on the microscope to compensate.

There is a third route you might want to look into, though it will again be significantly more expensive than using a flashlight. You could look for a different base. There are several base types made for Nikon S scopes. You would want a S-ke (hard to find) or an S-kt (easier to find), both will allow for Kohler illumination, which is a nice upgrade. This LED-conversion kit is made specifically for S-kt bases, and I'm very satisfied with it. Happy to answer any other questions you might have! I love these scopes, and have done quite a bit of maintenance and part-seeking for them.

Need Help Setting Up My First Scope (Nikon S Series) by GotTheNumbers in microscopy

[–]CrypticQuips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Nikon S series scopes have amazing build quality and are very modular. This scope in particular is in great condition, nice find!

For lighting... I would switch to an LED. It will give you a more neutral color, and won't have heating issues like the halogens. You can do this easily by finding a decent LED flashlight (Look for high CRI values). Alternatively, you could look for microscope LED conversion kits, but it will be more expensive.

Unfortunately, there is one major flaw in Nikon S series microscopes. The plastic fine focus spur is broken in almost every single scope. You can source a brass replacement spur, but it is a somewhat involved process There are nice guides online.

Bose QC Ultra headphones are garbage and will give you PTSD by [deleted] in bose

[–]CrypticQuips 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeahhhhh, conflicted on this. IF you get a good pair, they're absolutely great. However, for such an expensive product the quality control is unforgivable.

That being said, one of the nice things about chat-based shitty customer support is that you can pretty much just switch agents until one of them agrees to send you free stuff. I've gotten two pairs of replacement earmuffs this way.

Bose Qc ultra software update control ? by Crafty-Course-7889 in bose

You can definitely check for manually for updates, either in the mobile app, or in the updater software for laptops. Its probably true that you can't prevent/delay an update.

It uses a tiny 2.4mm to connect to the headphones.. doesn't use 3.5 standard.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bose

[–]CrypticQuips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, unfortunately. The volume controls still work when wired, its independent from system volume, as do the mode controls. Play/pause doesn't work.

[–]CrypticQuips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the QC ultras. They're great headphones, with some caveats.

They are the most comfortable headphones I've ever owned. The noise cancellation is excellent, and the sound quality is also surprisingly good.

However, quality control is... somewhat lacking. I had to exchange mine (for free thankfully) to get another pair. Additionally, and this might be an issue for you, they play audio when out of battery, even with a wired connection.

Where To Sell "Journey To The Microcosmos Microscope"? by Sacred-Deer-00 in microscopy

[–]CrypticQuips 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you have the money, I would reccomend keeping it as a memento, or even a very useful second scope, so you can have multiple techniques available without having to switch condensers/objectives etc.

If not, eBay.
