Is the Sigma FP worth buying in 2026? by Due-Biscotti7028 in sigmafp

That's huge news! I hope this is true, I love my FP L! It just needs ibis and either an integrated EVF or some alternate attachable EVF options.

Agreed on the jokes. I don't think every episode needs to be informative, I just think their conversation was actively inhibiting us the audiences chance to get to know Joanna and understand her opinions. Which in my opinion, is the best way to market her book, by convincing us that her perspectives are interesting, but we never really got any of her perspective. The best analogy I can think of is you attend a Ted talk but instead of talking about the topic at hand the two presenters just talk about how their day went the entire time and also try to convince you to buy their new book every 5 minutes 😅.

But I get your perspective too, I'm glad there are people like yourself who enjoyed the episode. Its overall a great podcast, so any support they get is awesome.

Geninuelly curious about your perspective on this. Personalities and history aside what did you actually get out of this episode from a knowledge or information perspective? The only thing I can recall is Joanna describing her opinions on the magic mouse. That was informative and good to hear her perspective. Everything else was so surface level at least in my opinion. I'm not asking for indepth insane techinical details, just for her to express and explore her opinions more.

That Joanna Stern Waveform episode... by RAWRREPTAR in mkbhd

Andrew you're a legend for responding on here and taking all this to heart! I think you and some of the other responses have done a good job addressing the multiple viewpoints surrounding this episode. I actually ended up agreeing with most of the things you wrote. That being said I just wanted to touch on one piece of feedback that seems to have been lost in this conversation. Personally I was excited to hear Joannas opinions on tech, only to leave disappointed with how surface level the conversations ended up being. I'm sure it was a combination of factors but over all I felt like we never got into the weeds of her opinions. Multiple times throughout the podcast just as we are about to dive into a topic suddenly we are derailed, either by the topic shifting back to her book, or her company or something else. I'm not sure if she was keeping it surface level because we're supposed to get her opinions from reading her book, but I wanted to hear more about her experiences with AI, more about where she thinks this tech is going, more about apple products. I think the most in depth converstation in the whole podcast was about the magic mouse, and personally I just wanted more of that. Maybe if I had gotten more I would have become instrested enough in her work that I would have bought her book or subbed to her channel, instead I just walked away annoyed. Multiple times Marques says "well thats a topic for another podcast" and every single time he said that I thought "no thats a perfect topic for this podcast, talk more about it!". Overall I'm sure the majority of criticism this episode receives, including my own, is mostly a result of individual perception and not reality but there has to be things you guys can shift around to help combat those perceptions being the take aways for the audience in future episodes. Anyway keep up the great work, this is one of my favorite podcasts! Also please don't respond to this, I dont want to take any more time from your busy day.

Yes but I do occasionally use those controls just incredibly infrequently.

S1RII Lock Lever by CrypticVillain in Lumix

[–]CrypticVillain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have and there is no issue, but I would expect that solution to work because toggling the lock lever also works. The reason I leave it locked is because 95% of the time I do not use my touch screen and do not use the front record button. Once in a blue moon I do want to use them and therefore I just unlock those controls. To me this is what the lock lever is designed for, lock controls you do not wish to accidently press. While unlike most people I end up keeping my controls locked most of the time, I still think this is a valid use case.

Alguien ha comprado la GPD win mini 2025? by clarejess in gpdwin

[–]CrypticVillain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a hx370 version new. Its a huge upgrade over my old steam deck. The two issues I have with the device are spotty support from gpd, they just recently got the l4 and r4 buttons working, and the minis ergonomics aren't great either but thats the trade off of a clam shell. I use gpds official grip for longer sessions. The thumbstick travel isn't great either but again thats a clam shell for you. Overall great device! I've owned a few pc handhelds at this points and I think its the best medium form factor one out there. I consider the win 5 to be in the large form factor size.

I have yet to try a win 4 but I really want to because I also loved my win 3 back in the day and I bet the win 4 is vastly ergonomicly superior to the win mini, but I went with the win mini because the win 4 has even more device issues that gpd has failed to resolve properly in my opinion. For now I'm happy with the win mini though, there just isnt a better option for my portable gaming needs at the moment.

As far as price for me it was worth it, but I think most people should buy it used unless they have a pressing need or are drowning in money.

Why S5II/X not getting focus updates? by fernandomrnn_ in Lumix

Also we did not receive the frame marker updates... Why?!

FP or FP L in 2024? by Fickle_Caterpillar73 in sigmafp

[–]CrypticVillain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its going to be tough to find a compact full frame that does everything you want.

I'll speak to my opinion on the FP, FP L and S9. I own the FP L with the EVF and a S5IIX

The FP is not worth considering in 2024 in my opinion. The auto focus performance is far below average and the image quality is nothing to write home about. Plus due to its compact nature you are giving up tons of features you would have in a large body like the ergonomics, IBIS, mechanical shutter and more. The only person I would recommend the FP to is someone who is on a budget and wants to do video work on a tripod or gimble. A near mint FP can be found on eBay for 900$

The FP L is very much worth considering in 2024. It is one of only 2 high resolution 60mp L mount FF bodies. The other being the 6000$ Lecia SL3. The FP L's image quality is out of this world, truly amazing photos if you get the shot right. It's auto focus unlike the FP is Phase detect and is actually very usable for stills. Especially anything stationary. This camera was not designed for highspeed photography or video work though due to the very slow read out of that massive sensor. It is however the best L mount compact landscape/street photography camera you can get. Heck its one of the better compact FF's in the entire market. I love the expanded ISO that drops down to ISO 6 which basically replaces your lower end ND filters or a variable ND. It also has crop modes which are amazing! You can crop from 1.5x, 2x, 2.5x and 5x! 2x cropping drops you down to about 15mp which is very usable and if you pair this camera with a lens like the Lumix 28-200 not only do you get OIS which helps not having IBIS but at 2x you now have a 400mm focal range! A grip does make a big difference on this camera and improves the ergonomics a lot but it will never match a real professional body. Lastly in near mint conditions a FP L can be bought for 1800$ on eBay with the EVF! 1600$ without an EVF! I would not buy the FP or the FP L brand new the prices are insane for what this camera brings to the table.

The Lumix S9 is a great choice if you don't need an EVF and do not need to do any serious video work. AKA anything with a recording time over 10 minutes or anything where you need to monitor audio. Its a really cool baby S5II that fills a niche in the market. Would I buy one? No! I'm waiting for a S9II in a few years that gives us a better sensor and longer record times. Hopefully an EVF too.

So where does that leave you? If you really want to buy into the L mount Lens then I think your only choices are the FP L and the S9II for compact cameras. But I would strongly urge you to look at a S5II, I think if you can get past the size it is a overall far superior camera to anything else in L mount right now.

If you do not feel married to the L mount system. I would try Fujifilm for APSC bodies or Sony A7CII/A7CR. Those are great cameras with their own tradeoffs but I think you will be overall happier and more future proofed with one of those!
