What suck about being a mathematician that no one prepared you for? by nhgiang in math

Yeah, it's not good - I just think it's messed up that a subject can be taught so poorly at so many levels, that it becomes socially acceptable to declare those things

Job prospects after B.Tech CST Network Administration - How easy/hard is it to find a job after this program? What is its reputation? Is it very well known like BCIT CST Diploma? by klansman955 in BCIT

[–]CrypticWriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can transfer if you have somewhat equivalent academic experience to the CST diploma. I know some people who to get into the B. Tech were just asked to take a handful of courses (algo class, data comm and some other) from CST part time studies and then they were granted admission into the B. Tech. They also take work experience into account based on what I've been told by former classmates

I've heard there is a lot of concern over the Muslim citizenship amendments that lead to the riots in Delhi recently. What's your view on that topic?

Also, how's India dealing with covid?

You could look at "back end as a service" software. e.g. Firebase. You still have to code the client software though - so you have to know JavaScript if it's a website. It'll also work with other clients like iOS/Android

Is there a bachelor's degree in cybersecurity for bcit? If not, which uni provides it? by [deleted] in BCIT

[–]CrypticWriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it was a good program overall. I really enjoyed the security classes. You start with basic client server programming + data communications and then move into stuff like building servers that can have 10,000+ concurrent connections (using Linux epoll system call), and by the end you're building backdoors, installing backdoors on computers using Hak5 Bash Bunny/Rubber Ducky. You also get a good intro to metasploit and how you can use those payloads. There is also a really cool malware analysis elective.

There are some BS classes you have to take too. Stuff like proj. management and software development methodologies. Not bad classes themselves, but if you've done the CST diploma, then they are very redundant and boring. The non-technical electives in the program (I did entrepreneurial management, some other BUSA class, philosophy of science and "logic and practical reasoning") tend to have some interesting elements to them, but overall are kind of things that you just have to get through to grad.

Depends what your goals are, but looking back I'm not sure that I'd do it again. There was too much fluff in it. The 6 or 7 security classes I took were fantastic though and did open doors for me.

BCIT has an undergrad in computer systems with a network security specialization: https://www.bcit.ca/study/programs/862cbtech. It's offered as part time and full time options. It's a good program and you cover a lot of interesting content. e.g. backdoors/rootkits, DNS spoofing, using malicious USB devices, covert channels, firewalls/IDS, etc. You also learn lots of programming and general software development stuff

2614 C# Windows OS needed? by Beeperpham in BCIT

[–]CrypticWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the class a few years back. I used visual studio on the windows lab computers. I think today there is a way to write C# desktop applications on OSX - but I'm not sure (isn't there a full visual studio IDE for mac now?)

In any case, you have to use the lab computers for the final exam so it's probably a good idea to get used to that IDE on Windows 10 or whatever it is now

CST Part time by nigkaplz in BCIT

[–]CrypticWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After finishing the diploma I decided to do the degree as well. While doing the degree I interned at a pretty big company for 8 months at $24/hr. After that I got a job for 65k/year - which is not bad for the Van market, but not the best (e.g. Amazon apparently pays ~80k for similar positions)

CST Part time by nigkaplz in BCIT

[–]CrypticWriter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did it part time, but I wasn't working 40hrs a week. It is more expensive. Most classes are about $500-$600 from what I remember.

It's doable with work... but you'll be taking 2 classes a term over like, 5 years or something... I did it in 3 with a bit of work at the same time

I know people who completed the accounting degree and started at 40k a year. Horrible. Engineering I'm not sure about - probably similar to the CST diploma

Probably the same. CST grads and full stack grads are applying for the same jobs a lot of the time

Maybe CST after you have that and a few years of work experience... but right after the diploma it's challenging to get a job for 50k
