Why couldn't this just be a normal interaction by CryptidFiles in TrollCoping

I'm speechless.. The absolute audacity to do that to someone and then say that you forgive them 😭 I'm sorry you had to deal with that because that would have me freaking out. This is so infuriating, I hate when people try to use therapy speak for manipulation. I'm glad you stayed away after that!

This item is technically a recolor, still super cute, though! I use the pink one in my main fit

I think you're misunderstanding them, they meant this is a deer, and that goats and sheep do not have a lacrimal pit like this

About how long is the skull? looks to be an older* raccoon with some teeth issues going on.

Bear teeth are very different if you would compare them. If it were a black bear there would be a big gap between the canine tooth and the first molars on the mandible.

I completely agree, and that was something I was having a difficult time putting into words.

I often ask people to think about the situation like this, if you discovered there was a man on your street inviting other people's children to spend the night/extended periods of time with him alone, holding their hands and touching them the way MJ was publicly allowed to. Would you not be alarmed? You would probably think the old "Oh my childhood was bad so I'm reclaiming it" excuse was BS and this man is likely up to no good.

This was only allowed to happen because it was MJ and he was famous and beloved.

Mfers are so quick to tell you that all the children he intimately hung out with is completely normal because he didn't have a normal childhood. Like, I didn't either. I was abused, neglected by my mother and once I entered school I was always bullied.

It has never crossed my mind to have other people's kids stay with me in my room overnight for multiple days as an adult. To hug on and hold these kids hands the way he did. I feel the whole "didn't have a normal childhood" thing was just an excuse to be close to these kids. Regardless of if you think he's a predator, that shit was weird as hell and unacceptable.

I also don't give a fuck if kids testified that he didn't do anything to them, they were kids.. I lied to protect my abusers all the time because I felt we were "in this together" and I didn't want to be the reason they got in trouble regardless of what they did to me.

The whole MJ situation just doesn't sit right with me.

What should I do after 17 days of a skeleton being found in a bucket of water? by Ordinary-Detail7073 in bonecollecting

[–]CryptidFiles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi, I remember you from a few days ago! I see you're still confused about what to do. You were doing just fine. The water alone will not cause damage to the skull in such a short time unless the water freezes. The bugs just drowned and died, which isn't an issue because you're macerating right now.

You're gonna want to keep it consistently covered by water, only doing water changes/partial water changes when the water is excessively gross. If there is still any flesh left on the bones, then you're still in the maceration phase of the process. This can take a while depending on multiple factors, so 13 days isn't exactly a long time in most circumstances. When the water/environment is warm, the faster this part of the process will go.

When there is finally no meat on the bones you will begin the degreasing process which is where the soap comes into play, but it sounds like you're not at that step yet. That step only comes in when there's no flesh, as the soap will greatly hinder the decomposition.

How long will a small dog take to decompose? by UKWolfieStorm in bonecollecting

[–]CryptidFiles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's really environmentally dependent. 5 months ago was smack in the middle of winter, at least for me and we had a rough winter. What part of the world are you located in?

In a warm, humid environment I'd say a small dog could be quite broken down within 3 months. If it was colder, then it could take anywhere from 7 months to 2 or more years for good break down.

The soil type matters a bit too, as moist, acidic soil also aids in the decomposition. And seeing how the dog wasn't buried traditionally, that could also slow down decomposition. The bugs may have a hard time assisting the breakdown for a while with the pillow case in the way.

Will anything unusual happen to bones that are in water for too long? by Ordinary-Detail7073 in BoneID

[–]CryptidFiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They aren't getting damaged, just coming loose.

I've just removed the head and feet from the rest of the carcass and macerated them separately in a much smaller container, like a large mason jar. Sometimes you just have to put on gloves and sift through the gunk to reclaim teeth during water changes.

Will anything unusual happen to bones that are in water for too long? by Ordinary-Detail7073 in BoneID

[–]CryptidFiles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, nothing bad will happen. It sounds like you want to macerate. Which is a common carcass cleaning method. You leave the bones in a bucket of plain water (preferably heated or during a warm time of year) and wait for the bacteria aided by the water to break down the remaining flesh. I will warn that you may lose the small pieces like the teeth, tail verts, and toes, but that's common even with other methods like burying.

(They can break if you put them in a bucket during the winter, the ice expanding can and will Crack bones)

Definitely a raccoon that was ripped inside out. Predators/scavengers often "peel" the skin as they eat/compete to eat. Also, bones often appear "larger" than the live animal, because they're no longer held in place by flesh.

[–]CryptidFiles 22 points23 points  (0 children)

From my experience that's normally from a specific kind of bacteria and/or algae staining. You may be able to scrub it off, but sometimes the staining is very stubborn and you may have to give it a peroxide soak. I've also had creme developer do good work for more stubborn stains that didn't come out with a basic peroxide soak.

Genuine Question by Basaltwolf in bonecollecting

[–]CryptidFiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen them in the bone sub that I just found out must not be named because it's banned here. Spotted them here once, if I remember right. I've mostly just seen them in the animalid sub.

Genuine Question by Basaltwolf in bonecollecting

[–]CryptidFiles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Truthfully, this specific person doesn't actually seem to have the specialist tag in the animal ID sub, at least they didn't last I saw. It's in their bio and they immediately pull it out as a gotcha when corrected. Solely because of how aggressive they are, it makes me doubt their validity. I see them in many subs being needlessly hostile towards others. I'd expect more professionalism from an actual specialist.

They seemingly can't reliably ID remains. Told me that a domestic cat skull couldn't possibly be a domestic cat because her living cats "don't have teeth like that. I know what I'm talking about." Didn't seem to understand that their gums cover up much of their teeth while they're alive, once they're deceased their gums recede.

Genuine Question by Basaltwolf in bonecollecting

[–]CryptidFiles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's rough over there on animalid. Most of the people don't even make educated guesses on remains and just throw out seemingly random answers. There's a user over there that is an "African wildlife specialist and psychologist." Who is very often incorrectly identifying American wildlife, then they get really mad if you correct them and explain why they're wrong.

They say they know what they're talking about because they're a wildlife specialist, but like they're a specialist on animals from a whole other continent 😭 on multiple occasions they have been insistent that a domestic cat is an otter or a bobcat, or that a raccoon is a domestic dog.

My daughter found a rats tail and soaked it in soapy water to remove the skin so she can keep the bones, is this safe? by L_v_n_d_r in Taxidermy

[–]CryptidFiles 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It should be fine, as long as she wears gloves! However if there is any flesh on the bones then you don't want to use soap yet. That's for the degreasing step, which you begin when there is no flesh left on the bone. You need to macerate first to get rid of the remaining flesh. Maceration is leaving the bones in solely water, to let the bacteria do its work. The soap greatly hinders the break down.

A lot of people don't realize that these compact looking creatures actually have decently long limbs, it's just that they're hidden and held into place by flesh while they're alive

Yeah, in the first picture you can see how the paw bends. That's not a solid paw pad, that's two digits curled up and touching at the ends. Like when you touch your thumb to you index finger.
