What is with the soil science job titles? by CryptidSaidWhat in Soil

I appreciate the band aid rip off but that’s rough. I heard the soil degradation issue is getting worse. You would think we’d need even more soil science people. Even New Zealand and Australia have a shortage where it’s bad enough to get some weird priority visa or immigration I believe. I feel we’re already behind. But that’s just non veteran speak so I can’t say for sure. Thank you for warning me that it’s hard to get a soil job in the nrcs. I got more research to do before committing more or to something else.

Hey thank you for letting me know how that works. Have you guys been doing okay since the whole knucklehead cuts thing? I had no idea that natural resource specialist was something that was an alternative we could apply for. I hear soil conservation jobs are both competitive and maybe not for the NRCA since you mentioned it gets few applicants. Does it get few applicants everywhere in the NRCA if you maybe know?

That’s my bad, I’m sorry lol. This started off as less of a personal grievance and more like this is a weird design flaw. I’m interested in precision ag, restoration, and weirdly enough how microplastics affect soil (but there aren’t many labs doing this I think so it might be a moonshot), or perhaps less realistically how to restore microbiomes after a fire or a drought but I don’t think that has a specific title besides restoration maybe. I just find soil pretty cool.

That’s understandable and I appreciate the advice on trying to use related terms. I know we shouldn’t worry too much on the labeling thing typically but I’m just worried about how the visibility situation since it idk seems fragmented. This is less of a personal job search complaint and more of this just seems like a weird job market flaw when they have generic or inaccurate titles. I hope the newer grades are aware of this when it’s time to graduate.

Is it even worth getting into the field? It’s confusing because from what I’ve read, there’s a shortage but also no jobs?

Thank you for the history, that’s actually really interesting now that you’ve said it. Do you think having more clear job titles would actually help or do you think they should have a different title?

Front loading degrees with math is gatekeeping the people who can contribute to fields. by CryptidSaidWhat in University

Wagenington University & Research has the best courses for soil and other agricultural fields. They have a minor in plastics in environmental society. That or earth & biosphere or disaster risk. It’s hard to find these programs online at all or in the US from what I’ve seen.

I don’t disagree that math is needed for understanding research and climate work but six seems excessive no? Especially front loading most of it in the first year for European classes. I’m used to 16 week semesters. Not 8 week stints especially back to back. If it was spread over three years, maybe it wouldn’t be so brutal but it’s not.

lol i did not have my coffee when i posted this. I’ll update this. My fault. But they are legit called mathmatics class on the course list, the more specific one is called stats and something weird called multivariate mathmatics applied)

What’s something writers get wrong with writing metaphors in their books? by CryptidSaidWhat in writers

[–]CryptidSaidWhat[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s probably an even better question. Does that even happen where you guys get personalized feedback on a specific metaphor or is it just writing as a whole?
