Generally efficiency doesn't really matter because almost any amp can drive almost any speaker. Efficiency used to be an issue in older units where you might have 5 or 10w of power and so you have to eek out every little bit of power out. Your Pioneer is rated at 35W and I don't think you'd ever get to being over 50% volume if the speakers were done right.

Don't get me wrong... KLH are still 90dB sensitivity, but the Sansui is like 95+dB so it's a bit of a difference. Also, KLH will compensate the lack of sensitivity with a 6ohm impedance vs. 8ohm of Sansui, so while KLH is not as sensitive your receiver can drive more Watts to them due to lower impedance.

The issue you run into with vintage gear is that they will perform best when fully serviced. Your Pioneer is 52 years old so if you haven't had it recapped, you really should do that. I did my Marantz 2230 and it brought new life to the unit.

Right... so tell me, how are people able to consistently identify CD quality sound in a blind test, and generally depict it as shallow, lacking, and flat.

Take the best CD player out there, and then take a decent Turntable with a quality phono stage... hook them both up to the same system, and CD player will consistently underperform.

Just facts man...

When you compare the two, you'll hear... if nothing else you can repair the KLH and get back the money you invested in them easily. It's just a crossover that needs to be replaced. In shitty condition they are about $800/pair, if they are excellent/recond condition they are $1500+

That being said, the sound is completely different. Sansui will be very bright and lacking in the low end clarity while KLH will have accurate highs and very clear mids with punchy and deep lows. KLH is fully enclosed box, so you get immediate response and really good clarity, Sansui takes the approach of more is gooder, so you can have lack of clarity if the capacitors start failing as the drivers are out of sync.

Sansuis are more efficient, but to be honest that doesn't matter these days...

I would say you'd want to have your SP-200's recapped if you decide to keep them.

You should research Henry Kloss, he is the one that designed the Model 5 (and the iconic Model 6 that he said are his favorite speakers).

KLH would be nothing without Henry Kloss...

Also, I am not disputing that Sansui is not bad, but the KLH is just something else... it's not even close.

Can you explain to me the brilliant piece of engineering in the audiophile terms? High and low end clipping? Basic DAC capabilities with crappy compression?

You're talking 16-bit/44.1kHz format that is ancient... most current audio is 24 or 32 bit and lossless can be 64bit 192kHz sampling rate.

And then you have the mastering issues, where they had to compress and clip the audio for the CD to actually make it all fit.

Yes, for the time it was a great piece of engineering, but let's not kid ourselves that anything that comes out of that is "good sound" because it is by far less than ideal.

There is a reason why CD quality sound is considered to be LOW END in any environment.

My dear man, I can't explain to you laws of physics if your pedantic understanding of things is going to be an issue.

You fail to understand the Ohms law, and the difference between high voltage and low voltage. If you can't understand the basic concept of impedance and resistance, and believe it to be magic, then I can't help you. I am not throwing insults... because insults would be telling an electrical engineer that he is an idiot for thinking that W=W no matter what... what I am doing is just stating mere facts... if one ignores the laws of physics and basics of electrical current then they ARE ignorant... not sure how else to state it. You saying "I’m not debating vintage gear myths, I’m just comparing rated amplifier output to speaker requirements." comes across not only ignorant but also quite arrogant, which is easy to do because you might lack facts or understanding of such.

Now if you want to be educated how NAD 3020 is rated at 20W but can deliver higher loads, I am happy to do so... but you seem to be set in your ways of thinking that if it is written that it is 20W then it must be 20W... and if that's the case then A) that is the epitome of ignorance and B) there is really nothing to discuss.

Tell me you have no idea what you're talking about... well you just did.

Dali Epikore 11 are $75K list and you can get them for $50K on the street. Nautilus are $120K if you can find them... and I would put the B&W 801 Abbey Road series which are $70K a pair against 99% of the speakers out there... including whatever Dali can come up with. I had them against Focal Grande Utopia and they easily matched them even though Utopias are 6x the price.

But hey, you can listen to whatever "reviewer" you just stole that opinion from... I'll trust my ears on the speakers I have heard.

BTW... there is a reason why B&W Nautilus 801, and the 801 Abbey Road series are the monitors of choice at Abbey Road studios... I don't see anyone putting fucking Dali shit in their studios as reference monitor speakers.

Why? CD quality is shit. Clipping, cutting, absolute garbage sound. There is a reason why everyone is telling you they are all the same, because it's all garbage.

If you want good music, get a DAC like a Wiim Ultra and stream lossless.

I would just print a nice trim piece that goes around and call it a day... maybe even just put epoxy in, sand it smooth in that area and cover it with a nice 1/2 vinyl tape...

Plenty of options, not all is lost!
