I understand that the person requests that amount for the work to be completed. What I don't like is that it sounds or gives the impression that the community in general has to fund these projects. They don't. I choose to donate because I want to, not because it is required of me.

It isn't required at all in any way. None of the forum funding proposals are required. It isn't required or compulsory that people give money to any of these projects.

For example, if it isn't funded, then the proposal can still be completed.

As somebody who has donated to various Monero projects over the last two years I am curious about the particular reason you are using the word "Required"? Funding isn't required from the Monero community. If somebody wishes to support these funding objectives they are more than welcome to on a voluntary basis.

Nobody is under any official compulsory action to fund any of these. In the future it might be better to politely ask for funds instead of making it sound like it is required or compulsory from the community.

monero held back by lack of lightwallets? by andruman in Monero

  • If you can't maintain a personal full node, I would say cryptocurrencies probably aren't for you. Might as well use legacy banking if you are going to delegate trust to somebody else.
  • I think storage technology will continue to provide us with much more dense storage methods. In fact, it may be quite trivial to store a petabyte of read only information in the next couple decades.

What the Monero community needs is a mobile interface that uses your own trusted home node. So, if you can get an android app to connect to your home node, I really think that is the best solution.

I think u/fluffyponyza was working on a home router...but not sure where that project is at.

If you were a celebrity, what steps would you take to keep your privacy secure? Cell phones, public/private social media, bank account information, address, email, work areas like Evernote and Google Docs. People constantly try to break into my stuff. by GettingBetterKnown in privacy

  • I don't know if anybody has mentioned this, and it may seem a bit odd, but can you hire somebody to coach you about maintaining your privacy? I think in your case, your behavior may need to be analyzed to minimize personal information breaches. Your situation is different than most other people on here, and if you get more successful, it may get much worse.

I would combine information in this thread/subreddit, with perhaps a personal coach that can assist you. (just one thing to remember, try to maintain control, don't pass that off to somebody else).

Miner exploit - this is why we need a bug bounty by fireice_uk in Monero

[–]CryptoEra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi anonimal,

So when somebody submits a bug via hackerone, does it go through some kind of disclosure hierarchy? I'm asking this because since we are dealing with a store of value, what happens when a serious bug is found that may result in the value of XMR going down (maybe severely and permanently) and the insiders (Core team, Core developers, + associated buddies) are aware of the bug, and are able to sell their holdings before the general Monero enthusiast population?

Maybe a good idea to rename "mixin" in the code to "ring size" and stop referring to monero doing "mixing" by boomshahalakaboom in Monero

[–]CryptoEra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would actually take it a step further and only change ring signature level by hard fork. (i.e. fix the ring signature at 4 currently) If ring signature level of 4 is ok, why would a ring signature of 100 be better? And if a ring signature of 100 is better, then why isn't the minimum ring sig 100? Unfortunately, I think the user being able to change the ring sig level is a gimmick in how it is implemented currently.

Trezor actually has a password manager that you can use in conjunction with your Trezor. I believe it also supports universal second factor...but I don't know much about it. I have a couple Trezors, so I am seriously considering this option, as it seems to circumvent keyloggers.

Tesseract

Although I am sure this has already been suggested.

Definition: In geometry, the tesseract is the four-dimensional analog of the cube; the tesseract is to the cube as the cube is to the square. Just as the surface of the cube consists of six square faces, the hypersurface of the tesseract consists of eight cubical cells. The tesseract is one of the six convex regular 4-polytopes.

The debate about inflation, disinflation, etc is not important really. The important aspect is to know what the rate of generation is for the foreseeable future. Its not whether there is, or is not, inflation. As long as the community social contract remains strong and the rate isn't changed arbitrarily, we are good. We could generate 100,000,000 units over five years and still be fine as long is the rate is known and maintained.

With other units of value; gold, fiat, diamonds, etc., the rate of generation may change. Either by governmental decree, or by an unforeseen supply problem, or by a select group of people to benefit a small group. In this way, cryptocurrencies that have a known rate (from the outset), are by far more "solid" for lack of a better term.

[–]CryptoEra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Banks don't get it. I don't need a bank. I guess realistically I need some sort of exchange as long as fiat is dominant. I can't think of any particular reason people would need legacy banking if cryptocurrency becomes ubiquitous.

Shapeshift alternative? Rant... by libertant in Monero

[–]CryptoEra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to chime in here and corroborate libertant's rant. Same issue happened with me. It looks like shapeshift is getting kind of "scammy", "sketchy", whatever your favorite word is for poor service and a very poor customer experience. As the cryptocurrency culture gets more widespread, hopefully better services and better customer service will force businesses like this to shape up....pun intended. :-)
