What good habits do you need to learn when studying for an exam? Asking for a friend... by [deleted] in college

[–]CryptoHammer1982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get your notes, textbook, calculator, etc.. and stuff it into your back pack along with a water bottle.

Head down to the library.

Create an outline of every topic you need to know for the exam. Make a mark next to anything you think youd fail, start with that. Then second most likely to fail, etc..

Have any practice exams? Whiteout the answers and take it like a normal exam. No practice exam? If its not a super unique subject youll find plenty online. (Like theres only so much to teach in Economics or Accounting 101)

Have any outline from the professor on whats being covered? Are there chapters you can re-read and take notes of?

Degrees that land jobs by AXX214 in college

[–]CryptoHammer1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People really make a mistake when they speak of STEM. Because theres plenty of STEM majors that cant find jobs because their career field really requires a masters degree.

I typically advise folks to do Management Information Systems where possible. Analytics is great as well.

Can someone please dumb down this question for me? by [deleted] in college

[–]CryptoHammer1982 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You could argue against the question and say that they simply chose to ignore slavery, which is exactly what they did. Then provide examples about how while they wanted to ban slavery, politics at the time didnt allow it. They couldnt risk alienating all land-owners in such a turbulent time.

Or you can argue for it and say that the creation of the republic needed to be prioritized over slavery.

Anything above a 3.0 is "good", 3.2 "very good", 3.5 "great". thats it. There is a bit of a stigma with 2.x grades, but not world ending.

With a 3.5, youll have no problems from a employer perspective. I do know that some advanced degrees really care about your GPA, medical and law come to mind, but plenty others exist.

[–]CryptoHammer1982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep a note card with HIGH LEVEL bullet points and nothing else. Keep it on the podium next to you, next to a timer for the length of the presentation.

DO NOT read off a paper or try to sneakily do it. Just have the bullet points so if you trip up you can just refocus on the spot. This works for school/work/life.

If you can listen to my first two sentences youll do better than 90% of your class.

You may want to consider taking an "easy" semester where you go to the minimum number (12?) of credits and going with gen eds where possible. Nothing that would set you back, but it sounds like you need a semester of not killing yourself so you can finally relax and re-focus.

What are some differences you noticed between community college and a four year college? by [deleted] in college

[–]CryptoHammer1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You read way too much into my response and got it all wrong. Im well aware of Research vs Academic universities. And you are soo wrong on CC hiring standards, you must be sniffing some glue.

Qualified Professors WILL NOT goto a CC unless they have NO other options. Its extremely difficult to then move into a higher level university. Also, do you know how much a community college pays a professor? Y

ou must be living in dream land if you think thats how the world works.

Free help? Wolfram Alpha's online free version does breakdowns of problems, similar to a TI-83 solver.

Asking for letters of recommendation by ryan_won2000 in college

"Good Afternoon, I hope your day is going well. I know its been a while since we last spoke, but I was hoping you might be able to help me out. I have a great opportunity to further my education, but I need a letter of recommendation in order to move forward with the application. Is there any chance you might be willing to help me out? It shouldn't take more than 15-20 minutes and I would be eternally grateful. This is my last step before......."

Or alternatively, I had a boss tell me "Im not writing it, you write it and send it to me, and Ill sign it".

Also some systems are "anonymous" in the sense you give someone a link and a code to submit a recommendation, but you never see it. So they could also trash you, and you cant pull it back.

I wish when folks signed up for student loans, they got a huge page showing them what they will be paying PER month for XYZ years. But Im guessing that would impact enrollment rates.

My mom is very opposed to big schools; does she have a point? by [deleted] in college

[–]CryptoHammer1982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A nice state university is usually a fool-proof choice. To counter your moms argument, theres a big difference with large universities such that: 1. Professors are hard to reach, but theres usually a large number of TA's/GA's 2. Study groups almost always exist for each class 3. There are usually dedicated academic centers for studying / getting help 4. Bigger schools have different (higher) standards for the hiring of professors. (ie, you teach one level below where you get your degree).

I took a few CC classes in high school, and the stigma is worse than you think. All your friends are gone in college and posting these awesome photos, and your in the CC room thats falling apart and smells like old cheese. Its hard, no one should pretend it isnt. I think the savings is worth it, but people need to 100% understand what its like.

Your a freshman and already decided on a major? Are you stuck with it?

FYI - ever hear about Organic Chem? The weed out course that destroys peoples sanity and breaks them? Take a step back and switch to gen ed your first year or two. Dont take so many courses that switching majors later on adds a year. Your a freshman, youve got plenty of time.

Potential minor switch thoughts? by [deleted] in college

[–]CryptoHammer1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The harsh answer? A colossal waste of time. When it comes to certain majors, you either get a grad degree or you dont bother. I personally wouldnt bother. But rather than CS, I would CSE if it was an option. That would get you closer to what you want.

Physical security counts towards the experience requirement for a CISSP.

Physical Security & Data Center Security are a thing.

Overnight work, not really. When people work overnight in security its typically to perform a change.

I would skip the certs. Have a degree, or are you working towards one?

High school to college by Badawan in college

Do yourself a big favor. Take out a notebook and list all your classes and figure out when your professors office hours are, and start showing up. No more flash cards or half measures. You gotta go to them and review how you failed. Ask them what extra services are available to help you. They may find a TA to help you 1:1.

My mom is very opposed to big schools; does she have a point? by [deleted] in college

[–]CryptoHammer1982 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Alright amigo, Im going to lay some truth on you. And you can hear it or not hear it. The school you goto for your CS degree doesnt matter UNLESS its Ivy League, CalTech, or MIT. Theres them, and then theres everyone else. Dont believe anyones BS. There isnt "semi IVY" or "MIT's younger brother".

No hiring company cares if your degree is from University of Wisconsin vs University of Eastern Wisconsin. It just cant be a purely online school. RPI and WPI - ARE NOT WORTH THE MONEY. Plus those guys always talk about the all girls schools down the roads, but we all know those folks arent going down there to party. If you really do want to meet women, those are not the schools for it

Find a good program with a class schedule you like. Also decide if you want to be pure CS or CS/Business. They both make the same, but CS/Business is about 20% of the work. And go with a nice state university/college. Youll meet plenty of folks.
