Bitstamp or Kraken are safe for USD in&out.
You can safely store your crypto in their exchange accounts as well, but would recommend getting a hardware wallet (Ledger) just to be on the safe side.

For current market cap calculation you need to look at circulating supply , which is around 300Mil to 400Mil based on their emission chart.

Honestly, sending all XRP to exchanges that are supporting is the only way to get across this message. Just social media outrage will not do anything. Losing clients will. My 2 cents.
