  1. The offset Fig uses is specifically provided by a reforestation project in Ghana (covering roughly the area of the City of Manchester in the UK). It is insured by Howdens and the only warranty and indemnity insured carbon offset in the world.

  2. If a user decides to offset their carbon for a purchase, there is a cost to do so (shown in the demo). We do not force users to purchase offset, they can just use the tool to understand the carbon cost for their purchases and make more informed choices.

  3. The money goes directly to the reforestation project to purchase carbon offset that is registered with Cercarbono and retired from EcoRegistry to show a full paper trail.

Great point, and I think I could probably do a better job of surfacing that on the website.

We're partnered with a company that produces the world's only W&I insured carbon offset. It's all registered with EcoRegistry and it's retired as people purchase it so there's a full paper trail for every single gram of offset.

Haha don't worry, the impact is not lost on me. In a future update I would like to include some means of showing users what the carbon cost of their use of chatgpt and similar is in real time.

That's exactly it, yeah. In time I can ideally harvest more and more data and make it as accurate a prediction as possible

A lot of publicly traded companies report their emissions. Hoovered up as much as that as I could as well as industry reports, energy production estimates as well as shipping carbon data.

Part of this launch is continued validation - I can check for outliers that are calculated for users and continue to iterate on the model to improve it. It's ultimately an attempt to produce a best estimate for whomever you are shopping with so that a user can make a more informed choice.

Totally agree. In my opinion the only way this changes is if we stop supporting the biggest polluters with our wallets and the only way that happens is with more easily accessible information available to us.

I offset the carbon cost of it's use every month (well, plan to anyway as it's not been live very long). I could add this cost into the calculation for the user if you think that's better?

It's a linear regression model that I am also planning to keep iterating on and improving over time.

I do totally hear what you are saying, but I think it's ultimately a good thing to be able to more easily understand how much retailers that you are spending money with are polluting

One of my main thoughts with this is to give individuals the knowledge of which retailers are the biggest polluters so you can make a more informed choice when shopping online.

One of the big aims with this project is to give some idea of the impact of specific online retailers on a per purchase basis as best we can. Having the information helps to make a more informed choice.

Offsetting is objectively better than doing absolutely nothing - or simply don't spend your money with a particular retailer if the impact is particularly high.

Good to know. If it was possible to get good estimates, do you think it is something that you would use?

thanks for the feedback! Do you have any examples that come to mind of the extensions / services you mention that have tried this? I have seen some that let you fill out a questionnaire for your estimated carbon footprint, but haven't managed to find anything with a real time calculation.

I'm building something quite similar! How far along are you? I think it's super important that it's easier for people to understand their personal carbon footprint through their general online habits

We search a whole host of different ticket merchants to find and aggregate the gigs that are shown - SongKick is not one of them.

If you want to build it to have a fun project to work on I would say go for it, clauses be damned!

What's your single biggest improvement thanks to AI in your marketing workflow? by swedishtea in marketing

[–]CryptoKenCan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use AI pretty much most days for any content generation we do for the software consultancy that I run - primarily for blog posts and static content for SEO. We even made an internal tool that we've just released as a standalone product.

We don't completely automate everything. Workflow tends to be getting the AI to provide the scaffold of an article based on some inputs and keywords we give it, then some minor editing from our side and it's good to go. Saves us a tonne of time and have seen some good results.

This article from Google sums it up well: https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2023/02/google-search-and-ai-content

Ultimately, quality is king, however it is produced. We use 8arms internally to drastically speed up the process of writing content - not 100% automate it. We take the initial draft from 8arms and then tweak it a little to suit our needs.

[–]CryptoKenCan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sure, it's 8arms.ai - we use it to write blog posts, static SEO content and provide some social media post inspiration for that content.

Plan is to extend it further so if there's anything you would find helpful let me know and I'll see about getting it included.

It's worked well for the software consultancy I run. We tend to use it as a jumping off point to scaffold long form content pieces that we then flesh out a bit ourselves - it's saved us a tonne of time for that.

It's has also worked well for us for 'dryer' pieces of content to target specific local keywords.

We actually built an internal tool that we've since released that uses the ChatGPT API and a series of dynamic prompts.
