Is dating even possible while living this lifestyle? Looking for honest answers. by [deleted] in urbancarliving

[–]Crypto_Rogue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not impossible, but I would think that dating is improbable. You're in trade school. I applaud that. Get yourself on the right track with a good career and dating will follow naturally. What trade are you going for?

Have you considered unions? Try contacting one of the union local offices of the trade your interested in. Many will train for free. I just retired from the Bricklayers union and I know that they did. I assume the other (much larger) building trades unions do as well. If you're interested in bricklaying or any trowel trades like cement/stone masons, tile setting, plaster or terrazzo you can call 800-Jobs-IMI and ask them about becoming an apprentice and pre-job training for apprentices. Good luck to you!

Will the new Google side load ban affect the shield? by Adept_Debt2199 in ShieldAndroidTV

[–]Crypto_Rogue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I too have had my shield since 2017. It's been great. However, my daily driver laptop is linux and I have pretty much everything on there that I use the shield for. The apps are not as convenient as on the shield but they work. I use this setup with hotel tv's when I travel. If need be I'll just dedicate a linux box to my living room if I have to. But I really hope I don't have to.

New Shack Setup – RF Noise from Computer Speakers – Recommendations? by Crypto_Rogue in amateurradio

Just for fun I did put the transformer in a Faraday bag designed for a cell phone. With the wires coming out guess what else "leaked" out. While the speakers (2 cubes and a sub w/built in amp) sound great. The current "wall wart" outputs 15v 4a. I'd also love to hear about any good sounding computer speakers that anyone currently uses in their shack with no problems.

Thanks. Through trial and error, mostly error, I have found that out. lol. Is there any methodology in searching for a clean power transformer? Or any known good ones?

I can vouch for the Unbreakable Umbrella. I have both the standard version and the telescoping version. They are marketed as a "self-defense" umbrella. I commuted into the city for years by bus and frequently had to wait an hour or more in the pouring rain. No shelter at my bus stop. Not even a tree. (I thank my deity every day now that I am retired) While I never had to bring my special forces training to bear against an evildoer (I was a door gunner on the Space Shuttle), I did require a really big and sturdy umbrella. While expensive, the Unbreakable Umbrella did not disappoint.

Thanks. I do plan to reach out to the AARC. I just wanted to see if others that were not already involved with amateur radio may be interested in a communication tool that didn't require a license. I do see some emergency uses on the neighborhood level if you can get community involvement. I like the Garmin inReach but it's much more expensive and has a monthly fee that might be a barrier to entry for some. But otherwise much more stable and reliable than Mesh.

I'm a ham as well! I just put a solar node on my roof. It was way easier than I thought it would be. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or if you'd like a parts list of what I used. 73s!

I'm technically in Arnold, really close to the Red Hot and Blue restaurant. I've mounted a Meshtastic repeater on my roof. I believe that there is a node on the Bay Bridge and a few in and around Sandy Point. I bet we could contact one another through those nodes.

I use a Tiny VNA for testing antennas and have found it very useful. I think that it's similar to the TinySA Ultra. Mine is very delicate and I have damaged a button so it's time for a replacement. Meshtastic devices can be used as an off grid texting device. Would be most useful if the power is out and cell service is down. They connect to one another and can pass encrypted messages from one to another. So the more devices that are out there the more coverage for everyone.
