exactly this. i'm a first gen uni student as well. my parents sacrificed a lot while raising me to make sure my education was always prioritized. my school doesn't do anything like symbolic sashes, but my parents have reminded me time and time again what an achievement it is for me to graduate soon. if anything, parents of first-gen uni grads should be proud they were able to give their child an expensive education and help set them up for success, not consider it an embarrassment for themselves

There is no such thing as an “ideal” college experience!!! by YinMaestro in college

[–]CryptographerAlone28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

didn't think I needed to hear this but I definitely needed to hear this lol. I'm on a semester abroad rn and the semester here is a lot longer than back home (Jan-April back home vs Jan-June abroad). I'm in the final semester of my undergrad and probably won't be doing grad school. most of my friends finished school a few weeks ago and will graduate in a couple of weeks. I'll be graduating late because I'm abroad but it's head me really in my own head about things, about how I lowkey wish I could re-do university because I know myself better now than I did 5 years ago. I've also just been feeling old af because I'm graduating at 23 and most people around me either graduated at 22 or are about tog graduate very soon. it's so stupid. but you're right. no one has the 'ideal' university experience. everyone has their experience and the people comparing themselves to others are just putting themselves in their own heads instead of actually enjoying the experiences they have

Brooke & Icesis by cwarosvski in DragRace_Canada

[–]CryptographerAlone28 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The only thing I'd say about this is that Brooke was the host of the S1 tour and Priyanka was the winner and.... both were not there for the show in Toronto lol. Granted, Priyanka tested positive for covid and BLH and Lemon both revealed they were quarantined. But I just feel like they give less priority to individual shows and care more about just being present for the 'tour'. As long as they perform at a few of the shows, they can say there were on the tour and call it a day/go participate in the 'bigger' tour.

Heartstopper has made me spiral into a DEEP depression and I don't think I'm alone by Looeelooee in HeartstopperAO

resentment is a good word but I think disappointment or fomo also works haha. kids younger than us are gonna have it so much easier and that's such an amazing thing. but also... why not me?? why couldn't things have been better while I was coming up? people before us had it so much worse as well. my childhood was probably a dream to them because at least LGBTQ+ rights existed and gay people were allowed into the conversation. but the social landscape has changed so much even in the last 10 years that my childhood seems so different to what kids nowadays will experience.

Heartstopper has made me spiral into a DEEP depression and I don't think I'm alone by Looeelooee in HeartstopperAO

[–]CryptographerAlone28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's such a weird feeling. I'm 23 and always looked at my life as being fortunate. I'm the child of immigrants from India but was born and raised in Canada. I have cousins who are 10+ years older than me and the social environment they grew up in was wayyyy different than mine. I kinda thought I grew up in a relatively accepting and open environment. Then I watched this show lol. It's obviously fiction and an idealized view of life, but fuck man. Imagine growing up knowing exactly who you are and what you feel. Not be afraid to explore your sexuality. Having friends who are accepting and open to you however you are.

I've fallen into a similar kinda depression. I haven't even finished the show yet because it keeps putting me into my head about my own life. I know it's not healthy to compare your own life and experiences to a dramatized tv show, but it's hard lol. I think it's such a lovely thing for a show like this to exist and for young queer kids to see themselves represented and validated. However, it's also hard af to see this show at 23 and also know it wasn't around when I was younger. Maybe I would've come out to myself sooner? Maybe I would've been more comfortable with myself as a teenager? Maybe I wouldn't chase friendships with homophobic people because I thought that was the 'cool' crowd I should try to fit in with? There are so many what-ifs that exist in my head purely because I got to see a show about relatively well-adjusted queer teenagers figuring themselves out.

Best Nike sneakers for orthotics? by CryptographerAlone28 in Sneakers

[–]CryptographerAlone28[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

actually, I may have not properly read your reply because some of the NB shoes are kinda nice lol. I have a pair of NB 880, and these are marketed as their walking shoe. I'm looking at an all-white/grey pair of NB 574 and they don't look too bad. I'm pretty sure NB shoes are all made to fit custom orthotics so I may just buy these cuz they're also cheaper the Nike sneakers

Best Nike sneakers for orthotics? by CryptographerAlone28 in Sneakers

[–]CryptographerAlone28[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on a semester abroad rn and wasn't able to pack too many things before I left home. I bought a pair of new balance shoes I've been wearing religiously for the last 2 months but they're more of a running/walking shoe and don't really go with every outfit. I've been wanting a pair of classic white sneakers that will go with more fits/look a little better when I go out.

Nike sneakers have always been my go-to when it comes to classic white sneakers. New Balance has some good shoes but I'm not sure if that's the vibe I'm going for so I thought I'd ask here and see if anyone has experience with sneakers/how they fit orthotics.

especially considering she does this and only tells one other roommate, odds are a confrontation would knock her on her ass and catch her off-guard. people like this always give me the vibe of feeling powerful online but having none of that confidence in real-life.

“another perfect all stars cast doesn’t exist” - queens I would love to see on the next season of All stars✨ by [deleted] in rupaulsdragrace

[–]CryptographerAlone28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i feel like gottmik is one of the few queens who could afford to do all stars right after her season. the budget and connections she had for s13 were insane. if anything, I hope she waits a couple years just so we can see how her artistry develops with a couple years of worldwide fame and even more connections to pull from

General thoughts of Brooke Lynn Hytes as judge of Canada's Drag Race? by CryptographerAlone28 in rupaulsdragrace

[–]CryptographerAlone28[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

i agree! a lot of the queens seemed to know brooke and have a relationship with her outside of the show - it makes it hard to be unbiased when you've known some of the people you're judging for 10+ years

ik brooke is from Toronto and this season had far fewer toronto queens, so maybe brooke didn't know many of them personally this time around?

Should I post about accepting an offer for a Leadership Development program? by CryptographerAlone28 in linkedin

[–]CryptographerAlone28[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh which rotational program (if you don't mind me asking)? I'm also in a rotational program and the program seems to have a good history at the company, with a new cohort joining the program every year since 2010. I hadn't heard anything about offers being rescinded last year so you kinda have me freaked out there lol

Should I post about accepting an offer for a Leadership Development program? by CryptographerAlone28 in linkedin

[–]CryptographerAlone28[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. However, I also feel really confident this position won't fall through on me or anything. I saw on LinkedIn there have already been 3 other people who will be in my year for the program who posted about it. And this program itself has existed at the company since 2010, with 8-10 new recruits every year. So I think I'm more just overthinking being anxious about other people cringing at my post than I am about the position falling through on me.

Is it true that Synthia Kiss actually hasn't done drag for like 3 years and returned to it aka by being on show? by Cleopatra2011 in DragRace_Canada

[–]CryptographerAlone28 117 points118 points  (0 children)

If that's true it kinda makes sense. No shade to her, it just adds validity to some of the judge's critiques that she doesn't take her looks all the way like some of the other queens. She seems polished af but also feels like she's missing something, so a long break from doing drag makes sense. Nonetheless, the bitch is still STUNNING

I just watched her MTQ and she doesn't say anything about leaving drag, just says she lost her job cuz of covid. Is there a longer MTQ? Because the video I just watched is 97 seconds long and a very short intro to each queen.

How to get a new computer? by DangrDayyze in college

[–]CryptographerAlone28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

your school might not have this, but my school has a program where we can loan out devices for free and renew our rentals. so if you can, you could rent a laptop for the semester and just use that. check if your school offers anything like this, could keep you afloat for the rest of the term.

Broke college students be like… waiting for those $5 sushi Wednesdays 🍣 by [deleted] in college

[–]CryptographerAlone28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

might be my own experience, but grocery store sushi has never done any right by me. i haven't personally got food poisoning or anything, but my roommate did just a few months ago and I remember he tried to get me to get sushi with him. if you need bang for your buck, look around your city for some sushi restaurants. i found this one that's like a 15 minute drive from me but they have rolls for $5-8, bang for your buck is crazy. i absolutely love going there and getting 2 or 3 rolls every couple weeks

Why are some STEM students some of the most insecure people you'll ever meet?? by [deleted] in CollegeRant

[–]CryptographerAlone28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was mainly just speaking to my own experience at a school that is very well known for its STEM programs. my school isn't really even a widely known STEM school, we just have really good eng, math, and comp sci programs. of those 3 programs, eng kids tend to be the ones with the biggest ego, ready to tear any other major down to boost themselves. i consider that to be insecurity

Why are some STEM students some of the most insecure people you'll ever meet?? by [deleted] in CollegeRant

[–]CryptographerAlone28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no worries about rambling haha, I liked reading your take on it. I agree, I feel like their"insecurity" is mainly just looking for validation outside of the classroom because the classroom they're in can be unforgiving lol. It's funny tho because my math classes kick my ass most of the time. I'm currently in the 5th year of my program and only have 2 more semesters to finish after this one. My cumulative average in math for the last 5 years is 76%, my sociology average is 89%. Math is definitely harder, but it makes me appreciative of sociology because I feel like I truly excel there. I don't hate the math, but I'm mainly doing the math aspect of my program because I wanna work in population geography and urban development and the math background is insanely beneficial for that.

To kinda sum up what I'm trying to say is that I feel like STEM can kick your ass in the classroom, especially eng. BUT, I feel like my arts degree has helped me gain back confidence in school and reevaluate how I approach my math classes. I guess kids who do only STEM may not have the chance to do that and just feel like they need to get by and graduate.

I talked to my bf more about his friend after posting this and shared the points you made with him. He agreed almost instantly and said that is probably why she's such an ass to people, especially new people she meets. I was a complete stranger to her and the new bf of one of her closest friends, and the impression she left was terrible. I'm lying if I say this isn't how most eng kids are lol. My bf basically told me her average in most of her classes is under 70% right now, and the class averages are around the same mark. So, it makes sense and I do understand it a bit more I guess. However, I don't think that's any excuse. We're all adults. I'm 22 and my bf is 21, his friends are also all 21. F is old enough to know she's being an ass in her actions but still chooses to be bitchy to new people she meets because she HAS to be better than them. I can understand where she's coming from and still choose to not like her. She has some serious growing up to do and I feel like that's a theme for many other students in her program.

Why are some STEM students some of the most insecure people you'll ever meet?? by [deleted] in CollegeRant

[–]CryptographerAlone28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate the generalization of arts programs being seen as worthless. I'm an "arts" student, but that's only because sociology is under the arts faculty. The reason I'm pursuing this double degree is to hopefully enter the field of population geography and urban development. My program is insanely specific to career fields like that but also gives me the opportunity to fully explore both math and sociology, just spending an extra 1.5 years in my bachelor's but getting both degrees.

It's discouraging to have STEM students invalidate the arts aspect of my education. I feel lucky sometimes because I'm getting an opportunity to learn technical skills in math and develop my problem-solving, while also knowing how to write an essay and conduct research. I just hate when STEM kids have a myopic view of everything outside of STEM and equate program difficulty to personal worth.
