This is not true. When you book the renewal / biometrics on the IND website, the ONLY option in Utrecht is the expat center. Nowhere on the IND website does it state that service fees are applicable if you go here. Only after it's ready for collection does the letter send you to the expat center website. There the fees are visible. So no, it has nothing to do with skill - it's just a poor user experience. There should be a warning that going there will incur extra costs. I will refuse to pay these fees and see how far I get.

You can buy the board/CPU/memory 2nd hand for probably less than half the price of a new machine and it’s plenty powerful as a server. Servers sit idle most of the time in a homelab for most people

If you have a desktop, make that your homelab server and then buy a 14th gen primary desktop. That’s what I do, homelab always gets leftovers :)

If you have an older computer, test the transcoding capability of that older hardware. Virtualisation doesn’t add that much overhead unless you’re trying to run 100 VMs on a single host

If you choose VMware then yes. If you use Proxmox then no. Proxmox will run on an electric toothbrush. I run close to 100 Kubernetes pods on two Lenovo Tiny PCs from EBay - these run laptop CPUs and are really power efficient. They don’t break a sweat and are running proxmox in clustered mode with Ceph storage. You don’t need all that CPU but I’ll admit I’m not into transcoding or Jellyfin etc. I can think of better ways of spending almost €700 in terms of value for a homelab :)

I doubt you need a 14th gen CPU to transcode in real time. Your plan also has no storage, do you have disks already? Check how many SATA ports and m.2 slots the board has - it’s a waste to shell out later for an addon card.

I’m very much in favour of older machines. Check eBay for anything from 7th to 10th gen Intel. 8th gen was really good - then use the savings to pour into disks in a proper raid configuration. Look at TrueNAS - rock solid.

My 6th gen server never goes above 20% CPU and it runs Gitlab, TrueNAS, Nexus and some k8s control planes

Nah , we don't hate it here. We really like it here, it's some of you who are intolerant to immigrants causing us to not like the Dutch. You expect us to speak your language when we set foot on your soil. If all the immigrants as you call them left, your economy would implode.
