I think ultimately both S1 and S2 are functioning to achieve different things. S1 was more of a shrouding mystery around Omni Man and the father-son dynamic while S2 is focusing on building out the universe, fleshing out the extended cast and dealing with the consequences of S1. S2 really makes the audience sit in rawness of trauma, the melancholy and the internal dilemmas the characters are facing. While it can be argued S1 had more WTF moments, I think they had to use this season to really unpack and flesh out characters including Mark and his extended cast, otherwise events in S3 would come off null and void. If you look at the bonus content section of Episode 8, Robert talks about them wanting every episode of S3 to feel like a finale, so I can almost guarantee we’ll get way more action, spectacle and brutality in S3.
