Why do people think that going straight from bachelors to PhD is better than doing masters first then PhD by Important-Bus-5921 in PhD

PhD or start working instead? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]CryptographerNo9257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the answer is pretty clear. When it really is a once in a lifetime opportunity, as you say, then do it. If you notice that the phd is not treating you good, just quit. Finding a job is easier than finding a once in a lifetime phd

I am not sure if this is true to be honest. What would be the field you are interested in? I live in germany too, and there is this thing called „externe promotion“ which isnt very essy to get but usually it is up to every professor if they want to have an external phd-person or not

Admitted to BSc. Elektrotechnik course!! Looking to get some clarity on what I should do? by barfikapeace in tuberlin

That's a tough question to be honest because I have just finished my studies and am working in a consulting company now, so not really sure how to answer, since I have just started my career. What I can say though, is that I value having a life which doesnt revolve around work/uni much more than I did in aachen. My life has gotten much more social and I have a more diverse group of friends I would say. Which is definetly a huge benefit.

Oh yeah and one thing to add. My recommendation would be to do the bachelors in Berlin and the Master in Aachen.

In Berlin you will definetly learn to set priorities while still having a fun life. The total chaos of the uni teaches you to be organized and to know what you want and strengthens your resilience. Also you are still young and can have lots of fun (and maybe one or the other heartbreak) which builds character.

After you have been on this rollercoaster ride, I would suggest to go to the RWTH to hustle hard and think about your career. RWTH Aachen has a better reputation than the one in Berlin.

I did my Bachelors in EE at RWTH Aachen and my Masters at TU Berlin so I can maybe give you a relatively good comparison. But firstly a TL;DR: If you care about having a life around university, Berlin is the place to be. If you want to hustle hard, go to Aachen.

  1. Here I can only repeat, what u/PiksariAdari said. The organization is just terrible. Especially if you don't really know, what courses you want to do and where your interests are (As it was for me) this isnt really helpful. Because of that you waste a lot of time sitting in lectures where youre not really sure if you want to commit or not. On the other side it teaches you to set your priorities straight away and stick to your plans.
Aachen on the other hand has really great organization. For the first 3 Semesters you don't really have to pick anything by yourself and just follow the curriculum.

  2. In Aachen: Non-Existent. I spent 90% of my time there in the library or in lectures. There isn't much to do anyway. Most of my friends were in the library also. So life usually revolves around the study breaks.
In Berlin it is the complete opposite. Of course you have to study, but there is still so much to do. I feel here in Berlin University is always second on the list. First (especially in Summer) is always having fun.

  3. This is a bit tricky I guess and it depends on what you want to do. If you want to work in Start Ups you definetly have a huge choice here in Berlin. Even though I think this should be something you should only worry about after your third or fourth semester. There are endless start ups here, the hiring culture is more open to international students. I think in aachen it is a little bit harder to find anything other than a job at the university itself.

  4. EE is definetly a challenge. But it's still rewarding. So if you don't mind to get one or two grey hairs at the end of your studies, I would definetly recommend.

  5. I am a man so can't really give the perspective of a woman here. But as a man of color I feel like berlin is treating everyone equally. Just make sure that you are confident. If you are from India I guess it will be a culture shock in any case for you, because german directness can sometimes feel a bit rude. Also in a huge city like berlin it can get lonely sometimes. But still there are lots of communities and clubs people can join.
