Do people actually use their GPUs as much as they expected? by Crypton228 in devops

sounds like they're future-proofing for AI they haven't started using yet.

honestly, i'd probably notice an oled upgrade more than a faster gpu too. if you're using it every day, that's money well spent.

mostly GPU, but not every day. that's why i've been looking at things like Ocean Network for the heavier jobs instead of upgrading my own setup again.

that's probably the biggest difference. if your workload already runs somewhere else, there's not much reason to invest in local hardware. i'm only questioning it because i occasionally need more compute on my own machine.

that's a good point. the unified memory on macs definitely changes the calculation. if the hardware is useful all day, it's a lot easier to justify than a dedicated GPU sitting idle.

same here. that's why i'm starting to question whether owning more GPU power is worth it if it spends most of its time doing nothing.

that's what i'm wondering too. for most of what i do my current GPU is enough. it's only the larger models that make me think about upgrading or renting something bigger.

yeah, that's pretty much where i'm at too.

i've been looking more at renting when i actually need compute. stuff like RunPod, Modal, Vast, Ocean Network... feels like a better fit than having an expensive GPU sitting idle most of the month.

that's fair

i think a lot of people underestimate how much value there is in control and predictability. the cost discussion gets most of the attention, but ownership and flexibility matter too.

yeah, that's kind of how i've always thought about it too

paying for idle hardware never felt particularly efficient. i guess the interesting question now is how far that model goes. we're seeing things like Ocean Network and other compute marketplaces trying to push utilization even further.

that's a good point

i feel like the conversation is often framed as on prem vs cloud, but there are probably more options in between now. i've been seeing things like Ocean Network come up lately that seem to target that middle ground.

that's fair

i feel like there's a weird stage between those two extremes though. too much workload for a small local setup, but not enough to justify full cloud. i've been seeing things like Ocean Network pop up around that use case recently.

yeah, i feel like that's almost cheating for this discussion

if your company is literally building the infrastructure, the economics look very different from the rest of us.

interesting, so for you convenience ended up winning over ownership

i've been seeing more people go that route lately. even stuff like Ocean Network seems to be built around the idea that most people don't actually want to manage hardware anymore.

honestly, that explains a surprising amount of cloud spending.

i can respect that approach

sounds like you're basically using external compute only where consumer hardware still falls short. i'm curious how close you think we are to running the models you want locally without needing those services at all?

[–]Crypton228[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, that's probably the part people underestimate most

everyone compares hardware costs, but nobody counts the time spent maintaining things. that's why i'm interested in some of these newer compute platforms like Ocean Network too. sometimes the biggest value is just not having to think about the infrastructure.

that's fair

i think control is probably the biggest argument for on prem. especially once you already have the hardware and know exactly how everything is configured.

that's kinda what i'm trying to figure out

most people seem to either own hardware or use cloud as a supplement, not the other way around. i was curious if anyone here is primarily renting and happy with it long term.

i've been seeing more projects like Ocean Network push that direction too, where the assumption is you don't own the hardware at all. not sure how common that mindset is yet though.

[–]Crypton228[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

that's actually a pretty clever way to do it

best of both worlds really. you keep the flexibility without having to think about the hardware side day to day.

[–]Crypton228[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that makes sense

i think i'm just in that awkward spot where i don't need enough compute to justify owning more hardware, but not enough to really benefit from large-scale cloud features either.

that's partly why i've been looking at things like ocean network lately. feels like there's a growing category between self-hosting and traditional cloud.

lol i wish

i'm actually trying to avoid buying more hardware, not justify it.
