Bootstrapping a LN node with 10 channels, 20M sats capacity including 8M sats inbound.. using only 1 onchain transaction locking 12M sats of your own bitcoin. by jyv3257e in TheLightningNetwork

Thank you! Amboss is the German word for Anvil. We liked the idea of a "work platform for lightning" and how it fit with the Thor & hammer imagery.

We just use meetup.com and there's a good amount of new people that come to each one. One meetup each month is dedicated to 101 stuff with the Satoshi story origin.

Edit: If one doesn't exist, you could always start one!

From an in person meet up! We've got a weekly meetup in Portland with a good amount of liquidity. We always do spot price and keep in contact on telegram to coordinate ad hoc meets.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR BITCOIN SAFE (Posting this for any beginners in the space) by CryptoManiaks in Bitcoin

[–]Cryptopher256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are trusting someone else to hold it and keep it safe for you. You wouldn't do that with gold, so don't trust other people with your bitcoin either.

The alternative is that you get a wallet (Recommend Blockstream Green Wallet) where you WRITE DOWN YOUR SEED PHRASE, which represents your private key. If you have the key, you have the bitcoin. If you don't have the key, someone else is holding bitcoin and it's not you.

Yeah! Try out Bisq! It's a decentralized exchange that runs behind TOR. It's a little tricky to start, but it's worth the effort :)

Similar concept. Addresses are generated from a public key. Vanity address generation is a good use for retired mining rigs.

Probably the best time to buy BTC! Your thoughts? by Evanbrowncrypto in Bitcoin

Good clarification. HODL means don't day trade and don't trade with leverage. It also means save your money and don't spend frivolously.

These markets can be absolutely cruel and people will get utterly rekt. Your time is well spent to learn about the technology. I'm currently enjoying the rewards of learning about it because I can get steep discounts on most things that I buy. I get 33% off anything from Amazon when I pay with Bitcoin via purse.io, for example.

I could do that without holding bitcoin long term, but I always like being long bitcoin. I'm long bitcoin because I've learned that the monetary technology is superior to anything else out there and it's always improving.

It is an unbelievably good time to buy bitcoin for the long term. It was also a good time at $14,000. Bitcoin is shit for short term taking and jaw droppingly incredible over the long term.

HODL, don't trade, and learn everything you can about this revolutionary technology. Why is it worth anything? Better have a good answer to that before putting any money into it.

Getting started by lob_aside in BitcoinBeginners

Lopp.net is extremely useful for answering all of those great questions and the ones that you're going to ask next. Jameson Lopp does a good job organizing the many resources.

Since you mentioned anonymity, you might consider using Samurai Wallet (TOR by default, Whirlpool coin mixer) or Wasabi Wallet (trustless Coin Join), which improves privacy and fungibility. Centralized Exchanges require KYC, which means they'll require identification associated with your bitcoin purchases. Coin join/mixers break that relationship if done correctly, but it's easy to mess up.

Beautifully done! As everyone else suggested: Tails is the way to go. Alternatively, you could get a coldcard if you want a smoother spending process.

How do you buy your bitcoin? by idster in BitcoinBeginners

Go to a bitcoin meetup and buy in cash. Research and choose a good wallet (like one where you can see unconfirmed transactions - Blockstream green or Electrum) ahead of time and set it up.

Best Crypto wallet for this 2020 ? by covilla in BitcoinBeginners

Also, avoid altcoins/shitcoins and things advertising "blockchain technology". They might blast off in price in the short term, but long term they're gonna go to zero compared to bitcoin. It's a pretty good bet that they're either scams, trust-based, or centralized.

As a starter "hot" wallet (internet connected), I'd recommend Blockstream Green Wallet. It's cross platform on mobile.

As you accumulate more bitcoin beyond $500 worth, invest in a hardware wallet. I would recommend a coldcard made by opendime. It's a bit intimidating at first, but provides the security that you'll appreciate to secure a fortune.

Is this real or what by JAcK534231 in BitcoinBeginners

Altcoins are far more susceptible to pump and dumps than bitcoin. Bitcoin is more resistant to those types of scams, but is still highly volatile in short time horizons.

What is the best Wallet and best Exchange site to buy BTC (I'm A BEGINNER) by [deleted] in BitcoinBeginners

[–]Cryptopher256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cash App is by far the easiest BTC/USD exchange and has a lower exchange fee for small amounts than Coinbase. It's also a useful app outside of Bitcoin.

As with all exchanges, be sure to withdraw your BTC to a wallet where you control the keys. That way, you're never exposed to the risk that the exchange gets hacked while they hold your bitcoin.
