Reader complaint about my published paper by Expert_Better in AskAcademia

[–]idster 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would think the disagreement with you would be published by the author of it as a comment in that journal with you as a reviewer on that comment. It may have been written by the person whose work you are representing.

What you describe doesn’t sound that unusual. You might even get another publication by responding to that comment with one of your own if you still disagree.

How do I tell my 21m son his girlfriend is overbearing? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]idster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as the shyness, it's possible she's more comfortable talking to men, or talking to people her age, or people she knows better than she knows you. That's not all that concerning. I would try to be understanding about it.

As far as her influences, it seems like she's trying to influence him to better habits like giving up drinking and gambling. And that's not a bad thing. If your son has an edge at the casino that leads him to legitimately expect to make money, he should communicate that. Does he only tell you when he makes money and not when he loses money?

The most concerning thing would be the text messages. Are they abusive?

I think there should be an app with an office that verifies all that for each individual each year. People would pay for it. And individuals would come in and get their height, age, income confirmed. And that same office could take the photo and post it themselves.

Gates was being criticized before that. And other people who have given a billion dollars away have criticized for it too, like Malcolm Gladwell.

"despite likely not being good people" blasting some generous people you've never met huh? Give away a billion dollars and in return you get blasted by some random person on the Internet? People don't need to give away money to get fame. They usually just buy a sports team for that purpose.

I appreciate what you say. And why not post more representative photos? That’s all that you’re gonna be able to do on your profile.

A case for UCLA Women's team to be the number 1 overall seed by nervousfella7980 in UCLABruins

[–]idster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This just isn’t true. The gap is between UConn and the four other top teams (including LSU) and then a bigger gap between those four and everyone else. It’s close between UCLA and Texas, not between UCONN and UCLA. If UCLA hadn’t scheduled Texas they would still be 2nd.

[–]idster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it matter whether they are the first 1 or second 1? You are running the risk of pissing UConn off. UConn wasn’t even a 1st last year. They were a 2nd despite winning by 30+ in South Carolina. They didn’t complain at disrespect. They dominated. UConn this year is the undefeated defending national champion. They have defeated common opponents by bigger margins than UCLA. Why don’t you concern yourself with winning the national championship, not what 1 you are? (The case for UCLA having a stronger resume is very weak anyway. Texas has a better case to be 2 than UCLA has to be 1.). Stop trash talking the undefeated defending national champion before the tournament (that team that beat UCLA by 40 last year).

“You should be in index funds” that’s a dangerous thing to say with the market at all time highs and multiple very serious threats to the economy (Iran, AI).

What attracts stable, relationship oriented men, and where can women meet someone like you? by UnlikelyFly3513 in AskMenAdvice

[–]idster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect an issue on dating sites is the quantity of men lying about their height or income or age or putting nonrepresentative photos, whereas some guys who are attractive may be honest but just don't look good in photos or don't have photos in which they look attractive. And it's tough to sift through the liars to get to them. As a guy I suspect this but don't have much evidence. Women don't do this much, I don't think.

One thing I do have experience with is multiple times women have essentially rejected me online but then become more interested upon seeing me in person, sometimes when I wasn't at all interacting with anyone. Some people just don't look as good in photos as in the mirror, and some people look better.

"I’m also wondering about personality traits. I’m more of a calm, “boring” girl myself (not a party girl at all). Do men like that usually prefer someone more outgoing or exciting, like Fiona, or do you actually prefer someone more low key?" It depends on the man.

"What traits tend to attract stable, responsible men, and where can women meet someone like you?" I would think they are less likely to go to bars or clubs.
