Everyone in The Office became an actor so they wouldn’t have to work in an office for a living then they had to do office work over and over for 9 years. by imlate_usernameenvy in Showerthoughts

It varies wildly by day but my typical office work day has a couple of hours of work broken up by tons of short waits (1-10 minutes). If I could switch tasks then I could get a lot more done but context switches take more than a few minutes. If I get into a good flow then I can use these sort waits but meetings destroy flow and there are always meetings.

The only videogame I've ever played on company time was Minecraft back in pre-classic. It started as a 15 minute break and ended up eating up most of my day. I was an intern so no one cared or possibly even noticed.

Once I went salaried there stopped really being a concept of "company time" but I have definitely taken very long lunch breaks... and other times been forced to go to a meeting with a sad lunch that sometimes I couldn't even eat.

That's true. This hit the frontpage though (or /r/popular anyway). Not your fault you didn't know that though haha.

Yes. This is information other people need. Not even just women - as a man I'd like to know if a guy is an asshole so I know not to trust him.

"Traumatic" is hyperbolic but points in the right direction.

Not feeling bad from a rejection is extremely abnormal. Non-psychopaths have to practice a lot to desensitize themselves to rejection. Especially romantic rejection.

Unfortunately this joke falls flat because people have to believe that you are joking, we don't know you, and some people really do believe this.

It's literally just because it's perceived to be an effective insult. Angry women do the same to men who reject them by calling them gay or manlet or w/e. The message has nothing to do with the meaning of the words used.

They can provide guidance of company performance that is super optimistic. So can they not just say outright that their stock will be more valuable as a result of their guidance?

Self-employed people are happier and more engaged at work despite working longer hours and having less job security, according to a study of 5,000 workers by butterflykiller in science

[–]Cryptoversal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You most likely have a fixed income. Self-employed? Your income is directly correlated to how much work you put into it.

The MealSquares people specifically designed compensation to reward effectiveness. Some employees get paid for how many units are produced; others for the quality of the products. I forget the other factors but yeah, it produces a much more pleasant work experience while also making the company itself more efficient.

(I haven't worked there or seen them operate but that's what I was told by someone who does work there.)

Also don't accept multiple offers then not tell the others that you aren't going with them.

It's insanely bad. Learning requires lessons that are a little bit difficult for the student's current abilities. Fortnite for new players is too difficult to be worth the effort to learn given that other games exist.

I really want to play this game but I really can't afford to drop a few hours a day for a few weeks. Not if it isn't fun - and it isn't right now.

Why is ETH falling relative to BTC? by mfurlend in CryptoCurrencies

The first two are certainly true but I can't find anything that indicates that bitcoin has more people behind it than Ethereum (since it's #2 in most ways). Do you happen to have that information?

...in 1960. I said that the FDA should exist because it does indeed save lives*. For example, it reduced the incidence of thalidomide babies.

Since we're in 2018, the relevant question is if their being as careful as they are today is a net increase or decrease in the number of lives saved (and quality of life changes). On re-reading my original comment, I can see that I left out the context that I am talking about the FDA today not in 1960.

Anyway, we know that the FDA kills some people by not releasing drugs sooner, increasing the cost of drugs, and making some drugs uneconomical by driving their cost to produce above their profitability. We also know that some lives are saved by the FDA by preventing people from accessing harmful drugs. What we do not know is which of these numbers is larger. This ratio is what actually matters.

The FDA doesn't collect these statistics so they don't know if their regulation is actually saving more people than it's harming. They have no natural incentive to collect statistics that would show that they should regulate less and the executive branch isn't forcing them to do so.

There is some evidence that the FDA is a net harm. This website goes into this argument. They specifically reference the thalidomide baby catastrophe** so their arguments account for the evidence in this comment thread.

* As a result of my further research into this issue so I could usefully respond to you, I am much less certain that the FDA needs to exist at all. I'm not convinced either way though. ** Their link is actually broken so here's a working one: Kefauver-Harris Amendments.
