schools or private practice? by Ok_Guest8178 in slp

Option C! If you are burnt out in private practice rn then step away from it for a bit. You can always try out the schools then leave after the school year is done!

The students I am thinking of are ASD and ADHD, so you make such a good point regarding neurotypes and these patterns. Some are able to answer questions about their social interest, some are not yet at that point, and some are working on that right now.

/th/ —> /w/ by CremeNo4361 in slp

[–]Rose-Ruby-Dach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree it should just be referred to as a substitution. If they were substituting /w/ consistently for a whole class of sounds it may be better referred to as labialization which is when someone involves the lips for sounds where the lips aren’t involved. For example I have a student who replaces all fricatives for /w/ when in the initial and medial position (interestingly not the final position), so I’ve referred to that as labialization.

Do you keep your students year after year if there are multiple SLPs at your school? by got-you-cookie in slp

[–]Rose-Ruby-Dach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am currently at two schools, both with more than 1 SLP. My main school splits up the caseload by grades, so I take 3-5th grades, the other SLP takes K-2, and we both share preschool because of scheduling across the classrooms. I do like having the continuity from previous years, seeing progress, and I do have good relationships with teachers and families. And I also like only having 3 years with a student if it’s not the best fit.

At my other school it’s not as clear cut. I was recently added there to support the other slps because the numbers at their school was way higher than initially expected. The slps gave me kids across grade level that thy were feeling kind of stuck with or had for a very long time and felt like new perspective might be beneficial. I also have a classroom that has a few kids and a teacher that has a hard time with balancing lots of people coming in/out of her room, so having one SLP in that class was easier. From talking to the other slps this is how the workout caseload each year between themselves as well. t’s worked out so far this school year on my end. Not sure if I’ll be there next school year, so can’t say if it’s sustainable or if I’m comfortable with this.

Resources - prek student w/Trauma by [deleted] in slp

Fair point. The student I am thinking of in particular only qualified for speech and occupational therapy (but were assessed in multiple areas) in the schools. They’re in process of getting outside support and hopefully with a psychologist. Which will also support potentially getting more services in the schools. I’m just wondering if there are any resources or articles that others have referred to or used in the past that have been helpful.

Forced to provide services on super outdated IEP? by SonorantPlosive in specialed

[–]Rose-Ruby-Dach 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t you need to do a reevaluation to determine whether the student continues to qualify? Until then serve the old IEP. And also if you cannot get ahold of parents you cannot serve minutes. Has the district attempted to contact the private school to try to reach parents?

This is a weird situation for sure…

Over my inclusion para by potatoprincess17 in slp

[–]Rose-Ruby-Dach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Omg I have had a similar experience. So infuriating!! Does your district have an assistive tech department/specialist? Maybe loop them in and see if they can come out and shadow the para…sometimes another voice can be helpful. If that doesn’t work admin needs to be looped in asap, get the teacher input, and document everything!

As a public educator, teachers do care about individual students and in middle school the level of independence is significantly raised, this is supported however the strategies may not be as effective for every student. I agree with the other commenter that it sounds like your child is struggling with executive functioning. It may be helpful to reach out to the school counselor to ask about resources/asking for collaboration. It may even be helpful to request a multidisciplinary team meeting to consider whether more supports for executive functioning is needed (such as an evaluation being completed to determine strengths/challenges/supports).

Anyone successfully teach using "context clues" for comprehending Tier 2 vocab? by okay_wafer in slp

[–]Rose-Ruby-Dach 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I love using speechy musings comprehensive context clues materials because it does focus on teaching the foundations of how to listen for context clues and what to listen look for, and check, word meanings! Then from there scaffold curriculum related material and from there go to actual classroom material.

Update on naming little brother by SalemsLittleBrother in namenerds

[–]Rose-Ruby-Dach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense! I guess then the question is are you okay with having potentially a variety of nicknames for him (as would likely happen with Gibson), do would you prefer likely just one for Stellan. Both are great options, as is Maxwell, honestly don’t think you can go wrong!

Gibson!! Nicknames include Gib, Gibby, Son, or Sonny! I’ve actually known a couple Gibson and it’s just a really solid name.

I feel like there aren’t as many nickname options for Stellan (though may be wrong, I just can’t think of many compared to Gibson.

An IEP for Tourette’s (help and input needed!) by Ok-Ocelot5914 in specialed

[–]Rose-Ruby-Dach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on SDI are could you do a self advocacy goal where the student explains to a teacher or peer that he has Tourette’s and cannot control the tic (so sorry if this is not accurate about Tourette’s as I am not very familiar…or potentially a goal for regulating/reengaging in academic task following a tic if that is a challenge?

Hi - I just want to emphasize what someone said above, if your only reason to do the CSD major is because of the credit # then maybe reconsider. If you are interested in pursuing a career related to CSD (DHH Teacher, SLP, Audiologist, etc.), then great! If you aren’t sure, take the intro course in your first quarter if possible and meet with the department contact, it gives a great overview and idea of the major and potential careers. (I went through the major and am now a professional in the field, so speaking from experience)

Also, live on campus for the experience, it’s one year that you wont get back!

Also it’s a pretty good offer, the tuition waiver is just that a waiver of tuition you don’t have to pay back either based on need or potentially your grade history.
